  • We were allowed into the flood zone to witness the Maribyrnong River flooding first hand to report on what was happening on the ground. The Anglers Tavern Hotel suffered extensive damage in the Melbourne floods, as did hundreds of homes that were submerged underwater.
Devastated residents returned their homes this morning to assess the damage. Affected streets include Clyde Street, the Esplanade, Chiffley Drive, Leopold Street, Anglers Way and Ensign Street, Maribyrnong.
This is a compilation of our footage and footage from other witnesses.
We were reporting live for Sunrise on Seven.

I lived near Aberfeldie athletic complex for 3 decades. 1993 saw similar flooding in the area. The Anglers Tavern was a mess at that time as well. But that's nature... we have to accept the good with the bad. It's not a force we can hold back. Often we can only look on in awe.

Around that time water was above the bridge because I couldn't drive across to get to work.

@@irena.el.o4198 That's correct! Of course, no social media back then. So this current flood is a feast for news hounds.

Council should stop allowing people to live and build in these flood prone areas.

The Deputy Premier of Queensland earlier this year made a interesting comment re development -flowing from the major flooding (here in Brisbane) earlier this year. Governments have to do better as the mental toll of people is unacceptable. For me personally, I have experienced the Brisbane floods of 1974, January 2011, Tropical Cyclone Oswald, Cyclone Debbie and will governments really do anything. The ALP ( back in the mid 1970's) had this Party policy to "mass-populate the Eastern Seaboard" and guess what, that policy is still in force but not visible. Mother Nature has severely impacted parts of Victoria and it was only a matter of time that Tasmania, Victoria, would have a taste of what Queensland's SE region has gone through. I have a active interest in the weather scene and people need to be prepared. This Summer can't be ignored.

The Anglers Tavern getting water up to that level is nothing new. It’s built next to the river, I remember this happening several times before. Presumably that’s why it’s built with the main area raised up. It’s basically a cost of them doing business in that location. Unfortunate but this won’t be the last time it happens.

Also when the pub was upgraded in the late 90's/early 2000's the lower floor was designed with the likelihood of flood almost a certainty. If they get enough notice, they take out the furniture, roll up the carpet and open the big floor to ceiling concertina windows and let the water in. The video shows the open windows at about 0:45. When the water subsides, they hose it out, put it all back and get back to pouring beer. I notice all the tables in the beer garden are stainless steel, probably for the same reason.

Do these houses get written off? How does it work with insurance etc.

Maybe not insured for flood. They’re built in a flood plain area, hard to believe any insurance company would cover them.

Horse rack tack has the flooding wall built.... it indicated that gov KNOW there is flooding chance along this river... that's why they give advice of horse race track unit to build a nice flooding wall........ why the wall built NOT cover the residential area,,, only for business of race track ??? Horse is more important than residents... Gov always only protect their work... or their private property...

And none of these residents ever listened to Jesus, who said in The Bible that the foolish man builds his house upon the sand. And when the rains came down and the floods came up, the foolish man's house got washed away.
