Grant, a typical mix for green sand is 93-94% sand and 6-7% bentonite clay. You will want to do a couple of things. After mixing your dry components together slowly add water until the sand is moist but not sticking badly to your hands. Let this sit a while to actually hydrate the clay. The next step is to mull the sand. To mull you want a squishing sliding motion. The idea is to coat the sand with the clay you have mixed in. To test the green sand, take a handful and squeeze it into a sausage. It shouldn't stick to your hands much. Then break the sausage in half. It should break clean and not crumble. If it crumbles then you do not have enough water in it. If the sand sticks to your hand and the sausage does not break cleanly then you need more clay. Keep in mind you only want enough clay to coat the sand. Any more, may give you slightly more green strength, but you lose porosity which will affect your casting. I hope you find that helpful. Joe
You have to mix your Potassium Nitrate with Magnesium Powder in 50/50 and light this. It is Flash Powder and better than Blackpowder. Try some experiments with this. Pls like that he sees it :)
yes especially the firecracker he made will be much more powerfull. Ps: the most powerful flash powder is Potassium Perchlorate and Aluminium Powder in 70/30, but it is a lot more sensitive.
The sand I have used for years is graded washed quarry sand. The powdered bentonite is ready to use from clay pottery supply shops and I use a mini mix cement mixer to do all the mixing. Dry mix sand & bentonite first then add water till it holds. Try not to use too much water or you will have steam pockets blowing through the casting. Degassing tablets & flux really make a final quality difference. Make sure you vent the sand mould thoroughly to allow the steam out.
Elggu I second that! people have been asking about it and he did make a marble melting video but I want to see him actually make glass! maybe even cast a glass pokeball or figurine!
Pour some silica sand, some soda and a dash of lime (calcium, not the fruit, we're not cocking food here) in a crucible. Mix it up and heat to about 1700 degrees (that's about 3100 Yank degrees), and you've got glass...
Sam Lashford An English letter referring to an organism, which is the contributor to this conversation, saw something in the past, which is an entertainment piece that had to had been eight minutes which was spent observing a male human being create a fine rocky substance known in English as sand.
Some things that I would like to add. Green sand is only used for 'soft' metals like aluminum. It will not work with casting steel. You need oil sand for that. Also, when storing it, it doesn't hurt to mist a little more water on top. Especially if you live in a hot and dry area
At 1:45, I did the same thing years ago to cement mix. All I needed was the "morter powder" not all the pebbles. So I bought a sieve, sat down, and sieved enough mix to get the required amount of mortar. And the sieve is jow used in the kitchen !
Grant, an alternative to bentonite kitty litter is diatomaceous earth. It's extremely fine bentonite/potters clay powder and can be purchased at any agricultural store and many pet shops. Even Walmart.
has wijnen I really want to make blackpowder or other stuff, but my parents won't allow it... (im underage) But I did the matchstick rocket and the match armgun (?) (I forgot the name, soory)
Another option is to use a ball mill to crush the granular materials down to almost whatever size is required. The draw back is that it is noisy and takes a long time to crush the materials down the the grade needed, but the plus side is this would allow you to use more of the granular materials purchased as well as allowing you to create a finer powder then you could get from sifting. From here you could test just how fine a powder could be used for metal casting purposes or other experiments. This is my first comment so I gotta add that I love the content your posting. Thanks for keeping experimentation fun and accessible. :)
I quick tip for getting fine sand on a budget: bake it in the oven a few times, the heat change cracks the sand. Parents used the method to turn regular play sand into a fine sandblasting sand (they were sandblasting a car)
Hey Grant, you should've just automized the sifting process by connecting the big and small mesh using paper (like a funnel), then you can connect this system to a vibrator and voila: automatic sand sifting machine. All you need to do is keep adding the sand to the top part of the funnel with the larger mesh and get the fine grain on the other end. Cheers!

The fun part of this video is that in real life I am a soil lab technician so that whole mixing the sand and water is what we do at my work, it's called the optimum moisture content, and it's the point where the sample has got water in it but isn't overmoist, and you use that water content to figure out how much you can compact the soil. It's what happens when you build anything so that the builders know you are compacting the ground enough so it doesn't suddenly sink a new building from the weight on top.`
Faizan Shaikh it can melt if Grant sir uses hi Power of Sun experiential Giant T.V. lens and put it on the top of foundry and propane Torches in the bottomand in this way he will get immense amount of heat and can easily melt or make glass.
just want to say that I prefer these types of videos to those that you have been doing of late. It's my opinion though, I just like the more projecty videos
I think you can use bentonite clay powder instead of kitty litter from the garden supplies store , it is added to soil to control moisture and nutrients cause it acts very much like a sponge and it is already a fine powder .
And as for making it, "the finest" is not always better, there are lots of factors that play a role in making moulding sand, but since I've learned that in Polish, it might be a bit difficult for me to translate that.

I agree its the grain size that matters and all soil mixtures contain different ratio's of sand , silt , and clay so its figuring out the best ratio for sand casting. Powder clay itself i say is the best for compacted your mold in it would almost make it harden a little into modeling clay if sprayed with water a little. Then you demold the item and cast into it with vent and pour holes drawn in the clay. The clay is like an earthware ceramic so should hold form when metal is poured in. Heck it might even create a ceramic outer shell in sand .
Hey Grant, about the moisture part, you could speed it very quickly spraying water from a paint gun while you pour the sand from one bocket to another!
You could go to a winery or a wine retailer. They use a very fine bentonite clay to refine wine. When it comes to sand, some crafting stores sell an ultra fine sand for sand murals. Since the sand must be very fine to do that.
You can use a shop vac to get super fine sand with a double chamber you also can simply crush the rough sand using a capped metal pipe as a mort and a smaller capped pipe as a pestal
Thank you! I have been hesitant to make my own green sand because I have not wanted to do this experimentation myself with limited resources, space, and patience
Back in high school when my friend and I used a cheap rock tumbler with metal balls to finely crush a wide variety of chemicals for use in making homemade fireworks. I bet it would work too for a long but cheap way to crush up sand
you can add a little bit of flour to act as a binder between the sand and clay. i don't have an exact ratio but i did this for my green sand i made 2 years ago.
yoooOoohh back in elementary school we used to go into the sand box and do the same thing. We had this whole assembly line going where ppl dug arm-deep holes down to the finer sand and then others sifted the sand into a bucket. To speed up your process, you can purchase bentonite clay in powder form on Amazon or at a store like the Vitamin Shoppe. It's advertised to be used as a face mask, but it's just bentonite clay. It's definitely more expensive than the kitty litter, but it's a super fine powder already in a jar for $6-8.
I Would like to see you combine several of your projects into a single useful project diy ......example rope, rockets , metal castings. gummy -chocolate molds. and a few others into a single useful project .
I recently bought some sand for my kids play ground area, from what I saw at my home depot the sand like to have here with the big pieces is with all the plants and outdoor materials. if you go to the other side of the store with the building materials, cements and stuffs. they have another play sand without all the rocks in it. would probably be a better option.
Hey King, window or screen door screen is really fine. When I was kid I would take them off the window at my house and make myself some super fine sand ;)

I'm very surprised at how coarse the 'play sand' was. Here in the UK, 'play sand' is very fine grains, almost as fine as the aquarium sand.
"That came out faster than I was expecting" That's what she said.

It's a really hard work to do shifting a LOT of sand! You're the best Grant!
I've learned casting last semester on college, and yeah, moulding sand is great and easy way to do stuff.
And as for making it, "the finest" is not always better, there are lots of factors that play a role in making moulding sand, but since I've learned that in Polish, it might be a bit difficult for me to translate that.
"I dont like sand. Its coarse, rough, and irritating...and it gets everywhere."
can u make a shield from metal foundry!!! that would be cool and it would be even more awesome if u made captain america design on it
Cookie_killz look up ZNA Productions he'll teach u how
IN ORDER TO MAKE A MORE EFFECTIVE BLACK POWDER YOU HAVE TO GRIND IT IN A BALL MILL, SOMETHING I TOLD YOU BEFORE, CAN YOU TEACH US HOW TO MAKE A HOMEMADE BALL MILL?
This is making my patience grow thin because buying the finest materials is sooool much easier... come on Grant.
A local sand and gravel supplier would have a variety of screened sand products in specific mesh values. You can get the exact consistency you want and it will typically be cheaper than aquarium sand.
I miss him, hard watch...
Help LinusTechTips to cast that heatsink
Try melting down magnets
Aj Maricano i dont suggest doing that.
Grant, I have an idea. So, take three birthday cake candles tape them together with a sticky not in between the candles. Finally wrap it up altogether with another piece of paper and maybe try to put gun powder in is. and you can try to fire off gasoline with it.
From doing this for a living, instead of using water, used (then filtered) motor oil works quite well.
Can you make lava?
TheMati117 He has, with the arc foundry.
Try to put orbees in liquid propane/butane and then light it on fire and see what happens

When mixing large amounts using a tarp or plastics works really well then you can fold an roll the sand back an forth 👍
I'm here enjoying your channel. I especially like the variety you have. It fits my eclectic mind.
Go to Lowe's and get the Quikrete play sand. It's already sifted and washed. A 50# bag costs under $5. It's very fine and really doesn't need sifted.

Hey Grant - the recipe I was taught (once and long ago) involved motor oil where you are using water. Something about steam really fouling up the casting. FYI. Thanks for the video!
When I did jewelry I used drugstore glycerin to moisten the sand, it worked quite well.

I have found that the mix works best if you use 2 parts sand and 1 part clay by VOLUME. And when the water is added the mix should not stick to your hands. Also, the sand will give you better results as you cast with it many times.
