  • To address the arrival of the 757 to the Fed-Ex route into Grand Forks, ND, this AeroCast Safety Bulletin is designed to refresh the pilot's knowledge of the principles of wake turbulence and effective wake turbulence avoidance. UND CFI Anthony Bottini lays out the necessary steps for avoiding a wake turbulence encounter and for recovering from an inadvertent one. Thanks to Udo Müller for sharing some great flying photos from Berlin, Germany and the retired Tempelhof airport.

Why is the B757 taking off with reverse thrust deployed?

We completely disagree with the VSI of the respective planes at 7.23 mins.

Ian Betts Actually, that diagram doesn't represent vertical speed, it represents climb gradient. So in that case, its a generally accurate comparison since the 757 moves over the ground so much faster than a C-172.

757 is a nasty one for wake was in an a319 delta shot off a 757 and about 1300 feet our a319 rolled with no turbulance or control input on climb knew it was wake but it was enough to feel the power those things have would not want to meet that stuff in a 172

The 757 is a scourge! ATC is supposed to keep everybody at least five miles in trail, but they often don't! I landed a 172RG behind one at MIA recently and believe me; if ATC crowds me up behind one of those again, I'll ask for a 360 or just go around!
