I’ve been fishing this pattern for many years although I was tying it differently. I like yours better and I’ve been tying your pattern ever since I saw this video. CDC wings are fabulous. I’m a true believer that I catch more fish with them. One reason I believe is that a subtle breeze can move the wing material and give movement to the wings. Trout can’t pass it up when they see motion. Thanks for sharing this. Great video and technique.
First time i have tied this pattern exactly as demonstraded and this years results 2020 have been excellent not only in captures but in floatability, visualization and durability.Perfecto Maestro,un Picasso.!
I have tried a few with dubbed bodies and fished them in size 16 and 18 when nothing else worked in October. Extremely low and clear water. This pattern is fantastic. It caught a 62 cm Rainbow trout. I was impressed and am very thankful. Keep up the great work and thanks again!!
I have no idea how I missed this but I missed a really innovative way to use these and I would suppose many other materials will do nearly the same. Fantastic idea. You are truly one of a kind with some of your wonderful tying techniques. Thanks for sharing. All the best to you and yours and God Bless. Sean
I have seen this video many times and I am still surprised. I got an idea the other day that I could do this too. Especially if I did it along with you. It took a couple of tries with the cutting, but I got it done. I keep looking at them and saying, "I did that!" I only started tying flies three years ago, and have become addicted. I haven't even fished any of my flies yet. My wife is ill and when The Lord takes her, I will, if He is willing have some time to fish. Thanks for sharing your extraordinary talent. Sean
Sean Mooney Dear Sean I am happy about to here you like the movies And I really hope you get time to try fish with the flies that is a fantastic dry fly. the best to you and your family.
Thanks so much for the well wishes. You are a phenomenal tier. I hope someday to be able to fish the flies. Right now I am content to tie them. All the best to you and your family as well. God bless. Sean
I've been fishing this fly in the North-East of England for the past few weeks and it has been deadly. What I also like about it is the way the fly is constructed in two distinct sections, the body and tail of which are virtually indestructible so that if the thorax and wing are torn apart by the fish (which happens!) it's easy enough to put the remains of the fly in a vice, strip the damaged thorax and wing with a razor blade, and then redo it, without having to start the whole fly again from scratch. The reconditioned fly looks just as good as new. I would also advise waxing the thread to stop it from slipping while tying in the peacock thorax and also that the two wraps over the CDC wing need to be one on top of the other to avoid an unsightly gap in the wing. This is a brilliantly innovative pattern/style that looks amazing and works fantastically well. twitter.com/The_Bad_Angler
Thank you very much for the kind words and the tips. Since i invented this upright cdc wing methode for almost 15-18 years ago it has been in my box. The fly is easy to tye, it do not spinn the leader, it float perfect with the up right wing on the water surface so the fly look realistic and is easy to see for the fish and fishermann. And last and maybe the best part, the fish love that fly ;-) good and wonderfull that some people have seen how good and effective this fly is.
Very nice looking fly and video. How does fly sit on the water? Isn't it going to tip over easily and then rest with one side of the wing on the surface?
+Stefaan C Hi thanks, If you tye the wing as I show you it always land on water with the wings upright on water. And the body hang right under the water surface. it is a very effective pattern. and easy tecnic to use for your flies. Good luck with the tying ;-)
Such an awesome pattern! Question: is that badger fur used for the tail or? The only badger fur I can find looks different and much thinner hairs. Any recommendations for a substitute?
That's one nice pattern that I will add to my box. Do you tie these in other mayfly patterns? Obviously it's achievable to do, but curious if you tied them in other colors.
+Jason Snyder Hi, Well normally, I would say that it deppence on the quality of your cdc feathers. Peronally I place 4 cdc feathers if it is bad quality. 3 cdc feathers if it is veary good. if you will tye a veary small size fly, 2 or 1 cdc feather can be enough. But again, it deppence on the quality of the feather. well I hope it give you an idea about it :-/ please ask again if you need it ;-)
+Jason Snyder I can tell you that my whole box is full of this pattern, it is a veary good floating pattern, always land with the wing upright on the water surface, and you can catch many fish on the same fly if it is tied on the right way. I am sure you will see this pattern more and more in the fly boxes along the river in the future.
+SMHAEN I tied 5 of your pattern with peacock Flashabou bodies to try out. I previously liked to tie a similar one with a CDC dubbing loop wrapped around a parachute post, but I found that pattern was not as successful as I'd hoped because it was solid upright sitter and looks really nice.
absolutely. I think it's the slim profile that you can get even on >20 size hooks because those bwo gnats are really small especially in winter, and it floats better than those expensive cape-hackle dries.
Hi JF C ! Start tying your own flies. It is not as complicated as it looks and it is great fun - a very creative process. And the best thing is, if and when you catch a nice trout with a fly you tied yourself the satisfaction is double.
+Slick Roode Yes it can. The only problem you maybe will get, is to find cdc feathers with long enough fibers, to get the right hight on the wing, to look good. But it is the lowest part off the wing that let the flly float.
Not only was this a great pattern but this has to be the most relaxing fly tying video EVER. Well done on both counts.
Thank You ;-)
Very unique tie. I love the results. I'm very glad I stumbled upon this video. Thanks for sharing! KANSAS USA
Thank you for your kind words. I hope you will tell me about your fishing with the fly as well ;-)

The best winging technique using any type of feather. Well done!
Thank you. And I am totally agree with you 😉
@@SMHAEN Love the 'bump' technique for creating wings on edible imitation patterns..so consistent and enjoyable to tie/use....thanks for sharing

+Franz Dümler Hi Franz That sounds good. it is an amazing fishing fly yes ;-)
Fantastica, quello che più apprezzo é la minuziosa pulizia nell'eseguire l'imitazione.
Thank You :-)
The most beautiful dry fly i have ever seen!
Thank you ;-) the most effective dry fly I have ever fished ;-)

Coc de Leon fibres would do the job nicely.
Sorry for this late reply. Yes Cock de leon hackle fibers would work very well ;-)
Really good way of tying in the CDC, nice tip. Do you mind if I ask what curved scissors you are using? That HMH TRV vice is beautiful by the way
I use a TMC scissors. the vice you see is not a HMH. it is a home made vise ;-)
Then compliments and kudos on the vice. It looks fantastic. Very similar jaws to the TRV and Waldron vice bud. Thank you for the scissor info
Sweet ty! Do you have a web sight to sell these? Tight lines🪰🐜🦗!!!
Nice pattern, I'll go for it. Thank you
You Are welcome ;-) you will love it
Вы большой молодец :))
thank you for the kind words ;-)
love this pattern. where do you get your cdc feathers from? second question do you tie this fly in other color combos to cover other patterns?
That's one nice pattern that I will add to my box. Do you tie these in other mayfly patterns? Obviously it's achievable to do, but curious if you tied them in other colors.
Hi Todd. All my mayflies is with this SMHAEN style wing. ;-) they just float perfect on the water and the fish love them :-)
And this thing is supposed to float?
Oh yea 😉
Give a list of materials To tie this fly
I like this a lot :)
Hi MrBlastFM good you like it. and it is a fantastic dryfly, it fish very good.
I sat down and made 7 after watching it yesterday :) Made one with snowshoe rabbit aswell. Turned out better than I thought :)
Nice ;-)
VERY SWEET !!
just one question, what vise are you using? i like how it doesn't take up that much room on the hook.
Hi SteveninHD it is a home made vise. in future I will design, fly tying tools. you are welcome to follow my home page www.smhaen.com please.
SMHAEN,
will this be the site where we can go to get the vise and the tools? If so how soon will they be available?
thanks
Steven
Hi SteveninHD you can buy the Bobbins already. please contact me on contact@smhaen.com if interested.
Супер!!!

Do you have to increase/decrease the number of features by the size hook? IE does size 24 require only 1 or 2 CDCs as opposed to 3?
+Jason Snyder Hi, Well normally, I would say that it deppence on the quality of your cdc feathers. Peronally I place 4 cdc feathers if it is bad quality. 3 cdc feathers if it is veary good. if you will tye a veary small size fly, 2 or 1 cdc feather can be enough. +SMHAEN great thanks. Also can you re-use the rest of the features a second and third time after cutting off the tips? or are they pretty much spent?
+Jason Snyder Yes You can use it for smaller flies as well :-)
How effective is the pattern relative to other dry BWO patterns you've fished?
Do you get consistent takes during a BWO hatch?
+Jason Snyder I can tell you that my whole box is full of this pattern, it is a veary good floating pattern, always land with the wing upright on the water surface, and you can catch many fish on the same fly if it is tied on the right way. This pattern kills it.
so you had a good succes with the upright CDC wing I gues :-)
absolutely. I think it's the slim profile that you can get even on >20 size hooks because those bwo gnats are really small especially in winter, and it floats better than those expensive cape-hackle dries.
superbe !!
Vedry efficient ,where can i but such fly in Europe ?
Hi JF C. That I do not know. sorry I can not help you with this.
Hi JF C ! Start tying your own flies. It is not as complicated as it looks and it is great fun - a very creative process. And the best thing is, if and when you catch a nice trout with a fly you tied yourself the satisfaction is double.
THis I dont know, sorry. but as Flugschüler Fluglehrer already told you it is not that difficult to start tying your own flies. ;-)
This is a no hackle fly, is it similar to a comparison?
A comparadun, if that is what you were referring to, has a wing of deer or elk hair.
Can this wing style support a size 10 Mayfly pattern?
+Slick Roode Yes it can. The only problem you maybe will get, is to find cdc feathers with long enough fibers, to get the right hight on the wing, to look good. But it is the lowest part off the wing that let the flly float.
bonjour je suis étonné de voir votre montage sur un tmc 103bl n°16
ces hameçons n'existent qu'en taille impaire 11 13 15 17
ce est mon erreur, ce est une taille 15.
