I practice minimal travel and only travel with one carry on bag, a 30-liter backpack. When searching for the perfect travel shirt I came across numerous merino wool review.
So let's jump into this: I left on my 12-month around the world itinerary with 4 different brands of Merino Wool. I had 2 shirts by Wooley, 1 dress shirt by Libertad, 1 t-shirt by Outlier, and 2 t-shirts and one long sleeve shirt by Unbound Merino. I now have 1 shirt by Wooley, 1 t-shirt by Outlier and 5 t-shirts and 1 long sleeve shirt by Unbound Merino.
Let’s start with the brand I would not recommend - Wooley! Wooley merino wool is really popular because you can get it on Amazon and it’s more affordable than other brands. However, be warned, it doesn’t hold up very well. I left on my trip with one grey Wooley T-shirt and one charcoal grey henley. Both of them started to fall apart after a few months. I would not recommend this brand of merino wool t-shirt for long term travel.
Ok, next is the Libertad dress shirt. I really liked this shirt but just didn’t wear it enough to justify it taking up space up in my carry on luggage and that's a no-no for minimal travel. I can’t really speak to how well it would hold up because I didn’t wear it much. But I think it’s a really well made, sharp-looking shirt. I just didn’t wear it enough and my long sleeve Unbound Merino shirt serves as a dress shirt if I need one. I have no problems recommending this shirt though if you're looking for a collared dress shirt to travel with.
So next on the list is Outlier. This brand is great and I will definitely be buying more of their shirts in the future. Outlier t-shirt is a little thicker than most merino wool t-shirts but they still work in hotter climates. I like this brand because of the wide selection of colors and the high quality of the shirts. The only knock on the brand is that it is the most expensive merino wool t-shirt out there. However, if you're a minimalist traveler, you can afford to pay for quality since your quantity is so low. This is a really nice, high-quality shirt. I can’t recommend it enough.
Ok, so the last brand I am going to talk about is my absolute favorite, Unbound Merino. I love this company because it’s the perfect combination of quality and affordability. You can get an Unbound Merino t-shirt for around $60 dollars. I started traveling with three of their shirts - 2 crew neck t-shirts and 1 long sleeve shirt. Recently, I added 3 more t-shirts - so now I'm traveling with 6 Unbound Merino t-shirts total, 2 black & 2 grey crew-neck t-shirts, 1 red v-neck, and 1 black long sleeve. This is probably a little overkill but I plan on phasing out my other t-shirts and just traveling with these. These shirts hold up so well, you can’t tell the difference between the ones I just bought and the ones I’ve been wearing and washing for the last 6 months.
I really love this black long sleeve shirt because it’s so versatile. You can pair it with jeans or slacks and it passes as a dress shirt and you can also use it hiking in cold climates. I wore this shirt in hot dance clubs in Latin America and stayed cool...and wore it during cold hikes in Patagonia and Peru and stayed warm.
If I had to pick one brand of merino wool, it would definitely be Unbound Merino. I

SUPER helpful, when I get back to buying clothes I'm definitely going to look at this fabric
It's awesome stuff!!!
Thank you so much!!
i've been trying to reduce number of my clothing recently, and started to have interest in being a minimalist too. I was looking for brands and clothes that would fit my taste and functionality and your video helped me so a lot. thank you so much for information and other great videos! great works!
Merino wool really is awesome. If you didn't know, Unbound Merino saw how much I talked about them and gave my viewers a discount code. Particularly loved the black merino long sleeves. Great review!
I love them too! :) Thanks for watching.
Got my Unbound Merino package this past Friday. THANK YOU!!!
Nice! love their stuff
Had Wooly. Fell apart just like yours. And I agree with you on the black t shirt. I sweat just watching other people exercise on tv.
yeah....wooly is not great!
Thanks 4 the insight!! Keep moving🤙✌
Always!
I live in Macau and here is mostly humid all-year and super hot and Merino wool is the best thing! I bought my shirts on King & Tuckfield and they hold up super well on hot climate, but also great if you are on a building with the AC on (because this is what happens in here). Super versatile, will check unbound merino!
Yeah...I love the material...so great. Thanks for watching and commenting.
I'm off shopping 🛍
Thanks for the great video 📹 😀
You’re welcome 😊
THANK YOU for recommending libertad!!
I've been searching for a proper shirt made in wool forever, and i just COULD'NT find that anywhere!
I love their shirts
I like that Libertad shirt. Just ordered one, and will look into Unbound.
Yeah, they both make great stuff.
I made a test with my Icebreaker T-Shirt as buttom layer and a noname Merino longsleeve on top. I had it on in September, October and November for 60 days nonstop. I ask people if i smell bad and they said no. Nobody belief me i had it on for that long. I love Merino Wool. All I have is one Backpack and i have 3 T-Shirts only and get along with it. Recently someone in a Hostel told me I am Extreme Minimalist, but i don't think so ;) Thank you very much for this Video!
Yeah, merino wool really is the best. I love the freedom of only traveling with one backpack. I could never go back to traveling with more.
@@30AndAWakeUp Yes, the one bag is cool. I will reduce again, smaller bag. But merino is also very sensitive, break fast if you treat it wrong. Washing is not that easy, if you been eating on your shirt ;) ... But all together, I do not know any other material that can make me travel with only 2 or 3 T-Shirts, 2 Longsleeve and stay in one bag. I just have washing laundry in a Hostel Sink, they are not so clean ;)
I wonder when you travel where you get the new shirts from, i have the experiences that Merino is only in Rich countries available
Nice review! I will try merino shirt
I love it.
Thanks for this video!
No worries!
I bought the Womens Merino Wool Capsule Wardrobe and I really like it from Unbound Merino. Will be glad when they come out with more womens
yeah...hopefully they'll get more women's stuff soon
tnx man, good work
No problem!
Thanks for the tips! I wish there were more merino wool clothing options for women!
Yeah, someone needs to start a woman's line!
Swazi make a lot of woman apparel 👍🏽
Swazi make men’s apparel too🤗warm comfortable and stylish -kinda expensive but definitely worth it 👍🏽

Unbound and Y-athletics have a women's line now. Highly recommended.
I must have heard you mention Merino wool in another video because I'd never seen this video until just now, but I am literally wearing a Merino wool shirt right now because I bought a pair of long sleeved shirts based on your rec. About to get a short sleeve shirt now because discount. I also got gloves and 3 pair of socks. Can't thank you enough for putting me onto something comfortable, good looking, durable as he'll, and with odor control as a bonus. But thanks again anyway.
No problem. I love the stuff!
thank you for saving me time and money... I was going to buy some wooly tee shirts... unbound it is
still loving their stuff
Nice video! Really helpful. I'm curious what pants do you wear? There aren't many Marino wool pants out there... A video on what slacks you wear would be cool
I wear bluff works travel pants! They are great!
Finally an honest review with no affiliate payback. Thank you.
I am an affiliate of theirs now but that was after years of wearing it. They reached out to me.
@@30AndAWakeUp Yes I see you clarified that after it happened. But what's important is you did the initial review without getting the kickback. I wish more people would understand how important unbiased reviews are. But I suppose with almost everything available on Amazon its more of a level playing field. I do wonder why people don't offer Ebay links as well. A lot of people don't like Amazon and feel more comfortable with Ebay. Why not just offer both?
Just purchased the black Short sleeve off your recommendation. Should arrive in a couple days. Looking forward to it. I’m usual a L in shirts but got a medium from model size and your size you mentioned.
yeah..i love their shirts. i still sport the same shirt im wearing in this vid...they hold up so well
@@30AndAWakeUp just arrived today and the fit is almost perfect. Large would have definitely been too big. Looking forward to testing out the durability myself and ordering some long sleeve as well
A travel trivia for the arctic regions: Insects are attracted to dark clothing. May he the radiant heat from absorption or adaptation looking for furred critters but definitely makes a difference. In southern areas, lighter garments make it easier to find and remove ticks and they feel cooler when the sun’s roasting you.
Great tips!
Didn’t know bugs live in the snow. 😧
Great video, exactly what I was looking for! I only wear black any way so that works out. Was looking at Outlier but that heavy price tag kept me away. I would like to replace my four short sleeve cotton T shirts with maybe two merino wool shirts. Glad my search lead me to your channel! That part of Thailand looks a lot like Costa Rica.
I do really like Outlier as well. But Unbound and Outlier are my favs.
What part of Costa Rica?

Thanks for the update. I was wondering how the wool shirts were holding up especially in the heat. Thanks for this video.
Thanks, Jerrod!
Hi, great video, really helpful. Wondering what do you think of DuckworthCo merino T-shirts?
I can't really comment on them - I've never used that company before. Sorry! :(
THANK YOU FOR THE GREAT HONEST REVIEW MATE.
No problem 👍
good videio thank you
Thanks for watching and commenting.
I miss when AETHER made a merino t-shirt.... top quality.
ill have to check them out
Thank you for the updates & I think it is worth an investment to get few stuff with good quality especially in a minimalist lifestyle. Will probably check the products & heard awesome reviews from other endorsers (trail athlete' s) 😁🌍👣👍👌
Let me know what you decide!

My only opinion is I wish Unbound merino had a women's lineeee!!! I know they are coming up with it but its been a while!
It should be soon!!!
@@30AndAWakeUp so exited!!
Can you do a video on the best travel pants?
yeah!
I have merino boxers (13% synthetic) by smartwool that are my favourite to wear for comfort, less sweaty… brought three pairs with me last month when went to Portugal, Spain & England. I washed them everyday because they didn’t smell fresh. Maybe here in Victoria BC I will go two days before hand washing them thou still I just don’t feel comfortable pushing it when it’s a quick solve to wash in sink dry by the next morning if really need to wear again yet I rotate to not be that crunches about dry time.
My merino shirts & sweater just like lambswool in general can go weeks without washing the pits don’t smell !
The boxers just for me need freshening up when walking around all day in very hot humid weather. If my nose can smell odour on them, I’m not that desperate to save a sink full of water on them sorry planet I try to do my part yet I also want to be sociable when traveling solo.
I also took sometimes two quick showers when traveling as again, they were quick and after a full early start day of walking before the European social evenings I wanted to freshen up feel new, enjoy the easy when went into shops later or for dinner that didn’t have salty sweat dried on me… that’s my comfort level.
I packed minimally one bag for 20days merino shirts & boxers, linen pants & shorts, bamboo/tensile dress shirt and one synthetic shorts for activities or swimming… next time I would pack two less shirts thou still the pack wasn’t heavy.
I’ve been checking out outlier website after years of hearing positive reviews, as want to see if maybe make a switch on items for hopefully the next trip I take. Travel is awesome and even better when done with fewer packed items. I will hand wash every evening & take cord for hang drying over the fuss of more options/weight/additional fees
Thanks for your suggestions
And looks like totally awesome travel experiences you’re having 🤩
Nice!
I was trying to check out the ‘hood while you were walking! Thanks for the info. Do they do getting stains out? That seems to be how I ruin clothes. 😬
haha...well I wear mostly dark colors but i did get mustard on my blue shirt and the stain came out!
Good to know, thanks!
Good tip on black for the tees. However did you find that they are significantly hotter than lighter grey wool?
I didn't notice a difference to be honest
Unbound merino must have doubled their price in the last 2 years. I'm seeing them at $126 now. Nice video. Thanks
Yeah, they've increased a bit.
@@30AndAWakeUp so now they are the same price go with the Outlier? 100% increase in a couple of years is outrageous
@@johno1104 Not sure where you are looking but the shirts are 85 and if you buy a pack of three they are 78 and that's without the 10% discount.
@@30AndAWakeUp Ah problem solved thanks.... They automatically convert to AUD
What a complete share!
Thanks, June!!!
Any tips for doing laundry while traveling?
merino wool is easy..i just throw it in a sink with some body wash....
I have been slowing converting my wardrobe into merino wool. I just have trouble finding 100% merino wool tees for women in tall sizes. I'm going to try a men's Unbound next to see if the fit is okay.
yeah, i wish companies would make more women's stuff...i get the question all the time.
I hope theses brands come soon to Brazil. I would love to buy some merino shirts
Unbound Merino ships everywhere
@@30AndAWakeUp Brazil is another world. You pay 60% of import fee under your product+shipment costs (i.e. if I buy a shirt for $50 with a shipment of $50 I'm gonna pay a total of $100 + $60 of import fees). Also, we have another tax called ICMS that is calculated only with the product as a base, that is around 20% too. In practice, I'm gonna pay at least two shirts: one for me and the other for government.
If the shop open one unit in Brazil, they can at least get some discounts that I can't as simple person.
Thanks anyway
@@rodrigosouto9502 oh wow...that's nuts
I have Unbound Merino socks, underwear, travel pants, short & long sleeve crew shirts for my travels in SE Asia. I can carry my items and clothing in a backpack & carry on.
UM is the best!
Grip6 sells high quality Merino wool socks that are made in the U.S.A.
Ill check them out.
@@30AndAWakeUp I also work for Grip6 so I could probably send you some socks if you were interested in reviewing them.
I have bought from Woolly Clothing and their clothes run small. I stick with Unbound Merino.
same...my woolly fell apart
Wish I could afford them.
🙏
I just ordered my first Merino shirt. 👍🏻
Not Unbound Merino because they don’t have woman’s.
Dodged a bullet, because I almost ordered Wooly, because I hadn’t seen this video...whew...lol They seemed too good to be true.
PS hi 😊
Nice
BAAAAAHH!!!
ha
great video!
any experience with t-shirts that are 90% merino and 10% nylon, particularly icebreaker?
also, have you had any issue with deodorant staining merino shirt?
Nope, I've only used 100% merino. I havent had any issue with deodorant staining.
In the UK we have Icebreaker. Would like to know your view on this brand!
I’ll check them out
Hey Kevin, What about the underwear comparison? Do you like unbound merino or the exofficio better? Have you changed any out? Thanks.
Yeah...I should do an underwear review. I like them both equally to be honest but the unbound merino are easier to care for. So on my next trip Im just bringing the Unbound Merino underwear.
do you have a video showing how you wash your clothes in hotels? I've NEVER done that.
I think I do...but I'll do another in the future.
What kind of jeans do you recommend?
Also, travel slacks... and maybe shorts?
511 tactical shorts are pretty light and comfy.
Honestly...I haven't found the perfect pants yet. Right now Im just traveling with normal jeans...nothing special and a pair of bluffworks chinos. As for shorts, I've been just buying cheap ones in the countries I've been but definitely on the search for a permanent solution. Sorry I don't have a better answer for you.
Have you tried the Outlier Dungarees? Or their shorts?
Also what do you think about Smartwool?
@@MicahMooreM I have not yet but i have an Outlier shirt and love them.
Black is bad for absorbing heat from the sun!
Yeah but it’s great for hiding sweat :)
Did you travel in Cheing Mai Thailand in this clip.
Yes
Just gearing up for my own Remote Year adventure! I've had a few Icebreaker Merino wool shirts in the past, so I'm already sold on the material. Any experience with Icebreaker and how well they compare your kit?
I haven't personally used any Icebreaker but I have friends that use it and they love it. Just started my last month of a 12 month RY program....you're in for an awesome adventure!
@@30AndAWakeUp Thanks! It's only become real in the past few days, so it's just setting in. Thanks for the content, it's proving to be a great resource for my billions of questions.
Do you still wear these same merino wool shirts ?
What about mohair? Have you ever tried it? I only ever wear mohair socks, but would love to get a mohair t-shirt to try out. I see lots of long sleeve stuff, but can't find a tee.
I haven't tried that...I'll have to check it out.
How is the neck holding up my biggest issue with any t shirt is stretched out necks. Would cycling through a few shirts as daily wear keep the necks crisp?
Ive had the unbound merino for almost 4 years...still looks new. I cycle through 3 shirts
For the Wooly shirts, did you get the lite weight or the everyday weight?
The everyday.
@@30AndAWakeUp ah, gotcha. I had the lite weight and had some durability issues with a few of the shirts. I was hoping maybe the thicker shirts held up better. To be fair, I did forget that they were in my laundry loads a few times and washed them on regular cycles instead of delicate and also tossed them in the dryer.
Have you found a deodorant that is OK to use with these products. I noticed it says for example to stay away from deodorant that contains certain ingredients that all of mine seem to have. Bought outbound and love it so far, just a little on the small size.
Yeah....honestly the clear type deodorant has worked well...most of my shirts are dark color...so I haven't had any issue. I did try a white deodorant once and it was a disaster. The clear gel ones seem to do the trick.
What about wearing he button up shirt open?
i could do that
My first Merino Wool shirt was from Woolly and it doesn't hold up. Clothes run small and are thinner
Yeah I quit wearing Woolley
I'm looking into merino t-shirt, since I leave in EU we have different brands, but I see some people complaining about 100% merino developing small holes after a while. Do you think this is also an issue with quality 100% merino shirts? it is a bland of 85-90% merino + other fibers better?
I haven't had that issue...you just have to wash them gently. The problem with blends is you lose all the tthings that are great about merino wool.
How is the drying time at hand wash?
depends on the weather...but usually in an hour or so
Hello friend. Is wool okay to wear in the summer? I travel with motorbike and i want to pack wool since its microbial and wont smell as much. But will i sweat much more than plain old cotton tshirt
it works very well in hot climates because it breathes bett
Want to buy wool for my moving company. Would these be considered good for summer
I wore nothing but merino wool in Thailand for a year.
Where do you buy the unbound merino for 65.00 because i see them on the site for 88.00?
Yeah, this was two years ago....looks like prices have went up.
Any discounts for surname?
Ha! Discounts for Unbound Merino
What happened to smartwool ?
Never worn it. So i can really speak about it.
Super random question, but what deodorant do you use? I'm super into merino too, and love how long they last, but hate the pit stains. Yours still look great after 6 months!
I use either clear gillete deodorant...but I found this stuff in Lisbon that doesnt leave stains or white or black clothes...it's called White/Black...really like it.
@@30AndAWakeUp in Europe deodorant usually is not anti perspirant like in the USA. The anti perspirant is bad for you and leaves stains on clothing. I use Tom of Maine in the USA, but it is not very effective. Deodorant in Italy is so much better scented and more delicate with clothes/skin.
I use solid salt crystal deodorant and trim my underarm hair works great with Merino and pretty much any black T shirt. Ive been using salt crystal for over 5 years now with great results. They don’t stain, can last for a year or so as long as you don’t crack it and very cheap to purchase!
@@KRTLyfe yeah thanks! I've discovered that as well and been using it for the last 6 months or so. Problem solved!
Then you didnt know devold as the Merino Mercedes😜😂
No problem!
the outlier t shirt how often do you wash them?
It just depends both the Unbound Merino and the Outlier can last weeks without washing.
30 And A Wake Up thank u.. I admire your new found passion for travel.. hope you will have more adventures to come....
@@lorlast5204 Thanks Lor!
Do you hand wash clothes or machine wash?
Hand wash mostly but sometimes I do throw them into a machine.
I don't see the links
Oh shoot! Thanks for the reminder! I added them.
I bought three of these shirts from Unbound Merino for a recent trip based on this video. After exactly one day of wear in summer conditions - went to a restaurant and walked on the beach - there were visible holes in various places, both on the body of the shirt as well as the hems. I contacted them and they refunded me. These shirts are useless. Unbelievably bad quality. Never again. I’m now using Seadon t-shirts and they seem to be holding up better - at least they beat the Unbound Merino by multiple days!
Oh wow...send them an email. I've been wearing that same shirt in this video for 3 years and it's still great.
would you recommend merino wool in south east asia as daily or travel clothing? Couple months ago SEA countries temperature goes from 40 - 50 degree celsius. I wonder If this material good for hot weather and quick drying?
absolutely…i’m in thailand, malaysia and the philippines the next 6 months and all i wear is merino wool
@@30AndAWakeUp One more question, are there any merino brands you know that have rugged outdoor merino? I don't know much about merino wool but I heard that it's pretty delicate, easy to get stretch. Thank you
Hi my husband swears by merino. He noticed from his icebreaker that using laundry detergent with scent and fabric softener damaged his items. Also, hang it out in the sun damaged as well. I don’t know if that’s what you used but, something consider if you did. Thanks for your insight, good content.
Most of the Icebreaker stuff is mixed with a little synthetic. That might be why he is having those issues.
How do you care for your Merino wool while you travel? Do you wash them in the sink?
I usually was in a washing machine if there is one available and air dry. But I have washed in the sink many times.
Hello, do you still wash them every wear? Does it affect the durability?
I don't but the shirt in this vid I still have and it's holding up well.
