- Deer Hunting 2019. Follow John as he hunts for buck during the opening day of the Pennsylvania rifle season in Clarion county. John sees lots of deer in the morning including a nice 7 point buck. John elects to let the buck go to grow bigger next season. John's wife Danielle joins him in the afternoon and the couple see more deer. John's brother and Ron both kill bucks on opening day. I've said it before but it is amazing to me how similar rural Penn is to Alabama. The accents are different but watching you guys is just like living life with my friends and family here in Alabama... all the way on the other end of appalachia.
Great video. I stopped using Hornady Superformance in my .308. That 150 grain SST was just too fast for what I needed in a whitetail round. Most of my shots are well under 100 yards. The last buck I shot the bullet fragmented like crazy and left a crazy wound channel. I switched to Federal Trophy Copper. Works for me.

I was hunting outside of Meadville, and I heard more shots than I ever have opening morning. I also saw more people get deer on social media this year than any other.
I wouldn’t have passed that buck no wayyyyy but that being said kudus to u for being that disciplined
Love your videos and appreciate your deer management philosophy. I hunt a 400 acre family parcel, trying to convince my 10 family members the same thing. Set your baseline buck, then go up from there. Let the young ones (with potential) go, and let them grow.

I agree, not much shooting on the Saturday opener! I hunt sgl in 4e.
The Saturday opener hurt deer season for my family. Kind of screwed up our camp tradition of coming to camp early Saturday, clearing out our spots on Sunday after church, then opening day Monday. I still go on the new opening day but my older uncles were so mad about it that they still come to camp Saturday and refer to Monday as their opening day. Definitely screwed things up for people with long standing traditions.

Opening day of rifle buck season here in WV is nowhere near the event it used to be. In the 1960s when I began hunting, everyone was out opening day (always the Monday before Thanksgiving). Now because of the deer population increase we have multiple types of seasons and antlerless seasons that have sapped a lot of the emphasis from opening day rifle buck season, which remains the Monday before Thanksgiving. By that time the meat hunters already have their venison in freezer camp. Also a lot of serious sportsmen now archery hunt, which runs most of the Fall. I
miss opening day as an event, but appreciate the hunting pressure being spread out over months versus just two weeks.
I felt the same way about the shooting on opening day. I hunt Tioga county and was expecting a lot more shooting. Good luck to all!

Not as many deer in Somerset County anymore. Didn’t hear much shooting again this year.
The county is nowhere near as good as it used to be.
Probably one of the quietest first days I have heard. I was surprised all the more that were hunting. Hardly any shots and the weather was nice to boot. So I don't know why people were not out

you don't hear any shots.

I agree with everything you said, I think more and more hunters are starting to let the younger bucks get older, and we are seeing more and more mature bucks because of it. I can't remember a year where I heard about or saw more mature bucks getting shot in PA than this year. But like you said, shoot whatever makes you happy. That's what its all about. Great video. Nice “episode” vibes. I would like to see time stamps when we are seeing the deer. Not a hugely important detail but it’s nice to have an idea of how long guys are sitting without any action. Gives non hunters some prospective as well. Putting in time!

JD Fike some hunters, not a majority, have gone overboard on antlers. If your first opportunity for a buck is a spike, then that’s your first buck. And it’s a big deal. My son’s first buck was a spike, and he was thrilled about it. As he should have been. Adults should face antler restrictions so deer can mature and provide better, more exciting trophies.

Newly purchased 6.5 Creedmoor did the dirty deed. Trust me on this one, the exit hole was nothing compared to Ron's lol. Now that was an exit hole.

Thanks for the video John... Great job! I hunted all day Saturday on the eastern side of the state (SGL 127). Saw nothing, heard nothing... No shooting anywhere near me. I was beginning to think I got it wrong and opening day was really the first Monday after Thanksgiving. Congrats to Ron... BTW. What did he do, dye his hair? It looks a lot “lighter” this year 😀

I've seen between 30-40 doe and littles along with 3 different bucks all legal in 2F just wouldn't give me a shot I was comfortable with. Lot of shots fired Saturday morning and evening around the Brookville area
Wisconsin rifle season is over now. Kind of a crappy year for seeing buck for me. I sat 7 of the 9 day's and never saw horn's at all. I did shoot 2 doe on Thanksgiving though and I did shoot a nice 9pt on November 5th with the bow as well as another doe with the bow. This will be my first year trying to hunt with a inline muzzleloader. Maybe one day I'll buy a flintlock. Great video as always. Good luck the rest of your season.
I hunt in Bedford County PA and I barely saw anything this year. Something has been screwed up these past couple years. Hunting in PA just isn’t like it used to be. We used to see deer all the time now we maybe see 3 deer a day
Great video as usual How do you like the Sat opener. I think it's really a bust . I don't think many extra hunters were about. Sure wasn't anymore hunters where we hunt in 4B. Great weather the first day but not much shooting where I was.
nope. a vocal minority made it seem like it was going to change deer hunting for ever. turned out to be one of the worst openers i've ever seen

I hunted 1B Saturday and heard a decent amount of shots. Saw a good amount of guys. About 15 deer. And got a nice 8pt. Seems like it all depended on where you were. Good luck the rest of the season!

With both bear and deer openers moved to Saturday, they lost their "holiday" feel, where people took off a work day to be outside. Now they are just another weekend activity. When Sunday hunting kicks in next year, it might feel different. But right now I am not a fan of the Saturday opener.

Great video ! Not much shooting here in upstate NY either ( east /central) . I usually get in a bit earlier than you guys . 45 minutes to an hour . Also I know it’s a law in Pa but I only wear orange in NY if I get out of my stand during daylight . Good Luck 👍🏻

Reason why last couple years have been quiet is because they are killing them with Crossbows in Archery season

Normal size exit with my 308 sst. Same grainage too
I shoot the 125g SST reduced recoil and man do they put the deer down. I really love that 308.
The furthest I had a deer go was maybe a yard if that. All the deer I have shot have dropped like a ton of bricks. Means no tracking for me
308 and 30-06 are the same bore size, so they'll produce similar results coming out wise.
Pretty much the same bullet except the 308 is a bigger bullet and the 3006 has a longer shell

I hunt Sundays in Md.. It's not what you think it is... I still use it for a scouting day with no hope or really intention of shooting something.
There's hardly anything killed on Sunday anywhere in the whole county. A little bit on private ground... not much though.
Good luck to yas... I wouldn't waste my time in 2C. 2B is a little better... Hell go out around Pittsburgh. They're trying to exterminate them there...
Brad Mason my son killed his first deer on a Sunday morning in Maryland last year. A pile of other PA kids were out hunting that same Sunday morning we were out.
