How To Make a Cyr Wheel for $50

- Cyr wheels cost around $500 to buy. Make your own starter wheel for $50. This is a good way to learn basic spins and waltzes. It is a great way to find out if you or your kids are really serious about cyr, without breaking the bank.
A lot of work but pretty cool if you have the time and dedication. I'm sure budget conscious people will love this! Even better if you need to make more than one, since half the hurdle is the jig itself.
+Gadget Addict - True that! And the second one only costs $15. PVC pipes are cheap!
Is it actually strong enough? I really want to do this but seems like a lot off effort if it’s going to buckle or break or not let me practice
Did u ever try this? I'm wanting something affordable so that I can make sure hundreds of dollars won't go to waste. I really think I'd LOVE it but I'd need to know for sure.
its way too small bro it has to be 4-6 inches taller than the user
+Soñador - Good point. Ok, this would be a good practice wheel for kids
I don’t know if this thing is right but I’ll tell you anyway... I searched this up before but apparently it has to be 10-15cm smaller then the user. Idk ima do some research now...
@@rubybelle6922 definitely needs to be bigger. The general rule of thumb in if your standing straight up in the wheel and can fit one fist between your head and the wheel it's a good size.
Ruby Belle 3 inches over your height.
That's correct for a general rule, but you can absolutely waltz on a too small wheel.. I've done it on one that fits between my legs...
how much hate mail do you get from pro aerialists/circus athletes?
Why would they be mad? This is a nice attempt at making a Cyr wheel, to see if it’s something to invest in further, but pvc pipe is nowhere near stable enough as aluminum/stainless steel/titanium, to hold 100+ pounds in a majority of the moves Cyr artists perform.
Yeah.. I've done a fair amount of wheel and while the thought of someone doing pennies, cartwheels, or any of the more aggressive moves is horrifying... Someone could get really hurt... I also bought my first wheel having never touched one. It's hard. This is probably a really good way to try a basic waltz and basic manipulation to see if you find it captivating.
I would never try to put this through paces invert or trust it with a superman or flag though.. ever. Way too much risk.
@@KitKatToeBeans this is a perfect solution for me & my situation. I'm older w a family & we're poor but the cyr looks like it could possibly be very worth the investment. I THINK it could be life-changing but I've never had any experience w one or anything similar. I cannot afford to be wrong, I would need to know for sure it's something I would be passionate about AND there's no physical issues..I'd need to actually have access to one to test the waters before dropping hundreds. I just recently discovered this magic & since have been obsessed w finding a way to have this in my life. Just watching gives me such feelings that this would be so good for my soul/well-being.
It's not hate mail when it's keeping someone from fucking dying.
that is awesome....I wanted to get one for my daughter for Christmas but ONE cyr wheel is the entire budget! LoL! Gonna give this a shot! Thank you :)
How did it go?
Did you consider making the smaller PVC ring concentric with the larger one, or post-tensioning the sections? Would it be possible to fill the entire inside of the pipe with epoxy, or would the heat be a problem?
The smaller is concentric with larger. There is a ton of pre-tensioning in this build. I don’t think the curing epoxy would melt the pvc, but wouldn’t add much strength. Epoxy, itself, doesn’t have a lot of strength. That comes from the aggregate mixed in, like fiberglass or carbon fiber. Those would not be present, if poured in.
6 years ago, did it hold up??
I eventually gave it away. I am more into building stuff than Cyr. But i see no reason why it wouldn’t, so long as its not being scraped on a rough floor.
Very cool you were able to create this but for people that really want to learn this should not be looked at as an option. It will be extremely difficult to perform proper movements and may end up implanting bad habits from the beginning. I know the wheels are expensive but they are an investment. There's a Ukrainian seller on Etsy that does Cyr Wheels for around 500$ shipped. It is the cheapest I have scene and the quality is more than good enough especially for a beginning. The wheel can later be used as an outdoor/beater wheel if you ever invest in a higher quality indoor performance wheel. That being said Cyr Wheel is extremely fun and I encourage everyone to give it a try! This PVC wheel is great to give people a sense of scale and the general feel of what it would be like.
Yes, this is just a cheap starter wheel you can build to try cyr for a few weeks or months, without spending $500+ just to find out you don’t like it as much as you thought you did. If you can do some basic tracks with this wheel, and love it, it’s definitely time to buy a real one.
@@HowToLou Yeah agree, it is neat and impressive you could build it.Did you ever stick too it?
No i like building stuff too much. No time to dedicate to cyr
@@HowToLou u wanna sell that wheel lol? I mean since ur not using it. I really want to try one so bad. I really think it could be life-changing for me but I'm poor, w a family so I'd need to know 100% it would be worth it. No way to know without having access to one, or u know, this. I figure I try this, either buy it or have it made, & save up while I'm making certain it's my passion.
after the magnet leads the pipe across the seam......uh....what holds the pipe in place?
+carterbroadway39 - the pipes are just there to hold the circle until you attach the inner and outer pipes together. They are really not needed after that, but pressure does keep them in place. If you want to be sure they stay, drill a little hole and spray in some Great Stuff expanding foam. They won't move after that dries.
HowToLou h
Do you think it's possible to create the double by doing the same drill procedure you did for attaching the two PVC circles together? I'm thinking you could even do double bracing (circle -- brace -- circle). Also, what about adding some sort of cement or even sand into the tubes to offer some rigidity? Still much less expensive than a $500 wheel.
EDIT: I'm referring to a German wheel ... using this concept to make your own German wheel. :)
Cement or sand inside the tubes will not significantly help rigidity. Both are great in compression, but terrible in tension. Wrapping both tube with fiberglass tape would help a lot. I almost made one out of wood, but got bored. This might help you in making a German wheel.

For "50$" that assumes u have a $100 driver and a $20 hair drier and a $200 miter saw alteady
This would be good for a kid size one, but wouldn't be suitable for an adult wanting to learn. Good effort.
Is the white pipe an inch in diameter on the outside or inside or or some other way?
Thank you for making this video!
When you buy 1 inch pipe, its always 1 inch inside diameter, meaning it can carry a 1 inch circle of water. The pipe walls are usually 3/16 inch or so thick.
Ha! awesome! I wanna try one! I actually just threw out the 2 sheets of Masonite I had sitting around my apartment for 6 months, now I'm super bummed. Anyways, I should point out that the wheel will be harder to control with flex in it, as some of the input from your body will be absorbed by it, but I still wanna see a video of you rocking this thing in 3 months!
+freedomcaller - This was a nice way for my daughter and I to get started in cyr for very little money. If we go pro :) we will buy a metal wheel.
+HowToLou if you go pro, build a pro one, ill even let you double the budget!
Lou Lou Lou is there anything you can't do?
+The Blue Farmer - Ha! Thanks. The answer to that is clearly: Ride a cyr wheel, worth a darn :)
Are the real ones make out of aluminum tube? Or is it like a jedi lightsaber where each crafts their own?
+The Blue Farmer - Yeah, they are all aluminum tubing.
if we put the screws through ( 3:26 ) at each end of the metal connectors will that help keep them from sliding if there is any relaxing of the pvc during use?
+cyndi waters - sure, screws could not hurt, but as you build it, you will see there is not much chance of the tubing relaxing that much.
Cool
how tall are you
6ft
Gracias toma tiempo pero no se ver tan difícil,es muy económico, sin dudas lo intentaré ^^
I’d use 1-1.5 inch instead and just one, not two. You can heat temper the line as you place it into the mold.
I tried heating. You can’t get uniform heating over such a long pipe. It kept kinking.
Maybe i missed, but what is the purpose of metal pieces?
They help you bend the tubing, and help the joints stay together
Hey my physics teacher said if I make one then he will give me an A+ for the quarter the thing is I’m not good at building. How much for you to make one for me, I’ll pay for supplies and shipping as well.
Sorry I am a teacher too. The reason we want you to build stuff is to learn new skills. Get good at building. Just follow the steps. Its a really easy A+ honestly.
kinda neat. good work.
How do you know how big the wheel should be? This is awesome!
Mine was a little too small for me. You should be able to stand up inside it.
does any one know the name of pipe material ??
PVC
can you please tell about size ?
Mine was only 5.5 foot in diameter. Use more plastic pipe to make it bigger
Hi! Why do you need to sets of PVC pipes, will one not be enough? thanks
+Moon Beauty Bar - One is not strong enough by itself
its too small for you though
Pretty cool! How is it holding up? Will you do a training progress video?
+Jesse Hughson - Maybe this summer. The trouble is that I like to build things more than I like to play with them, so I don't spend much time with it. Here for example of another project that will eventually become a German wheel: ruclips.net/video/qEuxqUfGslk/видео.html
