Thank you for this! I have never trained in Tongbei, but I've always been impressed by the power and speed in the forms. So interesting to see it applied in fighting. You discussion remind me of what my Hsing Yi teacher said many years ago--"we train to build connections to be strong. Hand connected to shoulder, shoulder connected to ribs, ribs to hip...etc."

This is probably one of the BEST KUNG FU VIDEO'S ever on the internet thus far. It clearly shows the diff BTW Combat Kung Fu and Kung Fu for show. The best street fighters that l have seen in the West have all been Chinese based fighters. But to the mainstream, it is a complete joke. Especially to MMA fighters. This is what's needed to bring the RESPECT back to Chinese Kung Fu.

I was very pleased to have my question answered, and with so detailed explanations, thank you Pang Chao!
Well, this tongbei looks truly realistic, and also the pattern of movements, vertical circles, is quite unexpected for most fighters.
And defence now is good, which is not possble in case of very big circles around the body.

@Martial arts enthusiast Pure pigua and tongbei, as they usually taught nowadays, work badly in a fight. Train badly working things and then invent something under stress and total lack of time isn't a good idea.
To say more, you can't even know if what you call 'signature' is real tongbei or pigua, because of great work of making wushu less dangerous, made by WuShu Institute in 60-80's.
By the way, have you ever personally tried to damage rival's arm using classic tongbei methods?

Thank you so much for your dedication and such a good explanation. To me, I think it's important that you make the difference between the form of wushu sport and the traditional form, the different ways of doing the form and the technique between one and the other, and the sheng fa and shou fa that you have to have in the movement. Hand hair makes them suitable for combat.

Your English is good! Thank you for posting in English. My perspective on tong bei is not very different from yours. Mine is not technical. “ I xing I yi” one shape one form is the highest level of quan fa. Swing is the most natural movement, and swing is at the core of other movements. Swing can be very small. Because the hand never leaves the body, the body must move, very much like you have stated. I really didn’t expect your understanding to be so similar to mine. My Kung fu is Han family yiquan. Of course we have principles from tong bei, water boxing, xing yi, tai chi, ba gua, shuia jiao. We preserve the wu xing chuan but remove the modern habits. Yiquan was created to remove the modern bad habits from Hubei xing yi chuan. You also point out that the large movements of modern Kung fu are good for movies but not practical for use. Many many times this is the case in modern Kung fu. If you keep progressing along this path you will find even more similarities with Yiquan. At least with Hanshi yiquan.

There's a lore of some style of taiji quan i read somewhere about large circle movement for health and small circle for fight.
I also saw a video of an interview of a Muslim Chinese martial artist saying "we train high, but we apply low".
In my search for original exact forms that taught to South East Asia, forming several branch of Silat (due to almost obvious similarities in movements and ryhtms, and/or oral traditions that the style sourced from a certain Chinese person), I came to conclusion that most movements in traditional Chinese martial arts forms are deliberately exaggerated.
This could be due to training full range of movements, and/or masking the original applications, to avoid counter from opposing schools, or diluting the styles for general public, giving the true meaning only for worthy students, or even for theatrical/showmanship purpose.
In those Silat, movements are relatively small and heavy in applications.

Really nice Video. I watch a lot of your videos and to me you do a great work. It's nice that you focus at the martial aspects and make very clear introduction to body mechanics and technique. Many things you teach have the same principles that my master taught me. I think especially in the internal martial arts there are lots of different understanding and so the training method often is a bit different. You research for zhen gong fu and your work is really nice. Thank you very much for your efforts and the sharing. In wich city is your school? When I'm back to China i would like to visit your place.

What is different between Tongbei and Piguaquan ? And is it true that Taolu San Chin from Bai He Quan is a base qiqong form for many kinds of southern styles like Bak Mei Southern Tanlan Dog boxing and others?

    • @johnchiang485
      @johnchiang485 2 года назад

Well, I have studied Pigua & Tongbee {connect through forearm instead of back (Tongbei)} which I believe the 2 style are similar. Anyways, Pigua is like a whip, striking with the whole arm with trips & shuai. While Tongbee strikes like a stiffer whip with a metal ball at the end with the main focus it's to strike with the hand as oppose to the whole arm. However, it does not has too much footworks as to Pigua so most of the power it's coming from the upper body instead the whole & no trips or shuai. But, it does has "fa jin" as oppose to Pigua. And the other styles you inquired, I can't elaborate on since I have not study them.

oh, you know a lot. As from Hong kong where southern martial arts are widely practised , I have noticed that southern Chinese styles are mostly fighting in short range. Bak mei and southern mantis use trangular stance and using both hands and body front to confront the opponent(instead of sideway confrontation)(while nothern including pigua and tomgbei use sideway horse stance). Southern style focuses more on sticky hands training(with both hands touching) and uses straight fist like Bruce Lee's ones rather than twisting horizontal fists. Kicks are usually not higher that waist. Both bakmei and southern mantis emphasise qigong(they are both persuing a sudden and explosive attack without preparation)but in a different way. Bak mei is the soft style that empahsises on soft and natural whipping power and the feeling of up, down flow ,circular motion of qi where southern mantis emphasies on hard style(fill yourself with qi that can resist your opponent) and trains on anti- neck locks, anti groin kicking and hands work with opposive force(qi) appllied. I noticed that piqua and tongbei are simmilar. My friend trains in five elements tongbei and he saids the style he is training emphasises on extending of ones' shoulder by encouraging smooth movement of the scapula and shoulder joints. I notice that the two forms tend to fight by extending the reaching distance and as a nothern style, many kicks are included as well. pigua from Taiwan Liu Yunqiao's school (baji and tongbei master)has moves of extending and contacting waist sideways in striking.
To be honest I think Mr Pang is right.Different styles diver in preference of certain moves due to different body shapes of grandmasters or different personal styles of fighting. There may be different in piorty of training too. However they are similar at the ultimate goal to train to use whole body power with great sensativity. Both ying and yang parts should be embedded. You need strength but not stiffness and all martial artists aim at fighing with subconcious with agility and strength at the same time.
As far as I know, these styles do not train with stationary zhangzhuang but southern martial arts always practise with stance and hold for a long while before proceeding to next moves, which I view it as having similar effect but a momentary one . In southern mantis, you can see a form performance is usually slow then a sunden unexpected explosive strike that consist of qigong. You can see in Fujian white crane as well(which decend to karate and karate practise their Kata in the same way)

You explanation makes sense but your split between modern and old TongBei isnt right I think. I have seen many videos of older family TongBei and they also train in big circles. But its just part of the training like the low stances are. In more complete Yang Taiji you also learn big movements / frames first and the better you get the smaller you can go. Its not a fixed form. I think its a flaw to think forms are fixed and they were never meant to be understood this way. I once heard that a true master in internal arts teach individually to suit the student this is why it could be that the form on every student look differently. This knowledge were lost with teaching big groups. Do you know Guan Tieyun? His speed espcially for his age is insane!
