- The Soviet Su-27 made debut to western world.
The test pilot Viktor Pugachev demonstrated a maneuver called Cobra that would later be called "Cobra de Pugachev".
The Soviet Air Force began receiving Su-27s in June 1985. It officially entered service in August 1990.

The Pugachev Cobra is at 2:30.
Anyone smug from revelations of the MIG-25 in 1976 would’ve shat their pants seeing this in 1989. I saw this at the 1990 Singapore Aerospace exhibition and I will never forget what I saw. #respect
I was at this airshow and remember it well.
I remember that aircraft was in the static display and it was towed down through the crowd to a starting ramp where the pilot and engineer went around it with a screwdriver, then started it up and did a full display.
I remember the wing just going over the top of my head i could not believe how close i was to it.
Just Imagine if that happened today with a Russian SU-27.
Excelentísimo video.

WTF was that!
A move swedish pilots did in the early 60s…
@@jonasthemovie True, but the Draken didn't have this thrust:mass ratio, and thus had much more of a drawback from losing energy during a Cobra manoeuvre.
@@jonasthemovie This can only be done with Russian jets the pugachev cobra first to ever do it a Russian . SwedenStan and it's nasi USA UK EU NATO will never defeat mother Russia saviours of humanity gods army

Old clip. The cobra effect is a commercial demonstration of the aircraft's capabilities. And piloting, of course. Now this is absolutely unnecessary and dangerous. The idea is, with dynamic braking, to kill the speed abruptly, to make the opponent behind you fly out like a cork in front and land on the front sight of the man doing the maneuver. You've seen it in Topgun. Up to the fourth generation aircraft, this number became. With the fifth generation, especially with the F-35, a problem arises. Close maneuvering air combat changes its character, even becomes pointless. The F-35 has a radar with which it can also see backwards. The main condition for victory - surprise - is lost. And launches missiles that hit the plane behind him. You lose invulnerability by being behind. The whole story with the struggle to get out in the rear hemisphere of the opponent goes to the cinema. Why go there when they will see you and smoke you right away. Such a maneuverable aerial combat is possible only when the ammunition is completely used up and relying only on the cannon. However, the question remains as to whether they will have the fuel to chase until exiting the opponent's rear hemisphere. Or everyone will act crazy and rush home and land.
Well, but this was more than 30 years ago and Soviet planes were not expected in the West to perform like that. And by then the Su-27 was already almost 10 years in service. It took another 10 years until the Typhoon went in serial production, probably the 1st Western fighter that could out-maneuver a Su-27. Yes, the weapon and radar capabilities in comparison to same era F15, 16 or 18 are probably a different story. Anyway seeing this performance is simply mind blowing, even today.
Okay? It's an Air show, it looks cool. Thats the point of the maneuver.
imagine trying to critique moves like this while theyre being pulled at airshows lmao it isnt actual war
@wanderschlosser1857 the typhoon actually does not outmaneuver the su 27
The F35 is bad at dogfight, because it was never designed as an air superiority fighter. Getting behind the enemy is still relevant especially in close dogfight - and no, in that scenario a missile can't be fired backwards lol 🤣😂🤦
