    DOD Carcosa can get pretty filthy too, but can also be brought down to a distortion pedal style, so best of both worlds in my opinion :)

    • @doctorfuzzzdirtbox
      @doctorfuzzzdirtbox  Год назад +3

      I love the Carcosa, it's on my board right now! I didn't feel it got to OK Doomer's thick vibes to be a good comparison, so didn't include it as it's more of a classic fuzz (and then some!) But IMO, a fuzz that no-one should be without!

    • @rocketpigrecords3719
      @rocketpigrecords3719 Год назад +1

      Was looking into the Acupulco Gold, & came across a few people that mentioned that the Carcosa covers tgat territory.
      Bought the DOD, because knobs > knob

    • @doctorfuzzzdirtbox
      @doctorfuzzzdirtbox  Год назад +1

      @@rocketpigrecords3719 hmmmm, the Carcosa covers a lot of territory, but I wouldn't say it does the AG/Sunn amp thing. It's basically all classic/vintage fuzz ground short of a Big Muff.

    • @rocketpigrecords3719
      @rocketpigrecords3719 Год назад +1

      @Doctor Fuzz'z Dirt Box
      @Doctor Fuzz'z Dirt Box the "Sunn amp thing" isn't going to come out of a power amp driver in a box, or a discrete version thereof.
      The Beta Lead preamp is quite different. And I'd imagine a Model T likewise to have more going on.
      It's a cool sound but I'm not hearing the "hmmm maybe a Matamp isn't necessary" filth I get from this vid. Imho the AG was a brilliant idea because it's like 4 components in a project box getting sold for 20 bucks less than a Sovereign, and sounds good, though I think for most, the amp it's overdriving is going to be a large part of the mix.
      Could be wrong. YT does weird thinks like make Bad Monkeys dound like Klons.

    • @doctorfuzzzdirtbox
      @doctorfuzzzdirtbox  Год назад +1

      @@rocketpigrecords3719 yeah, good point on the different amp models. I think the Carcosa with just "Before" is a very good amp like drive. It's just that when you introduce "after" it's very much fuzz, so not what I'd like of going towards an amp distortion. I haven't played any actual Sunn's though, so I'm at the bay of anyone elses wisdom on that.

    There’s a few “alternative” Big Muff circuits out there for DIYers.
    Fet Muff.
    JFET/Mosfet Muff
    Mosfet/BJT Muff.
    CMOS Muff.
    IC Muff with different ICs.
    IC Muff with transistors in first gain stage.
    Transistor Muff with IC input and output stages.
    Etc etc
    All are very basic builds.
    With the Acapulco I found it a bit tame on its own. I run mine into a Model-T JFET box (Both DIY because I’m cheap) Adjusting the Acapulco volume really changes the texture of the whole sound. Adjusting both the model-T gain knobs (running both channels) and the Acapulco volume can yield good sounds. There’s a lot of variability in sounds.
    That OK pedal gut shot looks like any BMP could be made on it. Looks like a BMP with missing diodes and different values. Also, from the sound it sounds like a BMP but a little different.
    (There’s a tip for DIYers)

    And the Pharaoh still reigns Supreme. 🤪
    But really, don’t pay extra for the Pharaoh Supreme. My humble opinion, after getting to A/B my Pharaoh with the Supreme, is that while the idea of the pre input control, is a good one, I ended just dialing it in to tones the normal Pharaoh could already do. The extra diode settings, are fun to play around with at home, but when the drums, bass and definitely another distorted guitar(and/or keys), are in the band mix, they weren’t very usable.
    If one can find one for the same price new, or used, and don’t mind those enclosures, try it out. But, I would say get the Son of Pharaoh, to save board space.

Fundamentally, the circuits could be similar (to what the 386 is doing), but the OK Doomer is more "old school" in approach - and obviously more parts. Curious what that internal trim pot will provide for tuning the gain.

    Ok Doomer is a just a regular variation of a big muff crossed/stacked with a univox superfuzz. The Acapulco Gold is two cascading LM386 opamp with an INSANE amount of volume, you need to boost a cleanish tube amp (Matamp, Orange OR "anything" ) with it to get it to sound really good. Two different animals, both are cool and good though. As for the Huzumitas, the main goal is a big muff that is not mushy and lost in the mix, not maximum gain and doom, it is the best big muff ever made in my books, thanks to Wata and Jamie for bringing this to the world.

  • @TurtleGarage
    @TurtleGarage Год назад +1

    I think the Veri-Tone Arcturus has more gain (40db give or take), but it's not necessarily aimed at the stoner/doom demographic.

      I'll have to check that out! Is that boost (output) gain or clipping gain?

    • @TurtleGarage
      @TurtleGarage Год назад +1

      @@doctorfuzzzdirtbox It's not clipped. It has two gain stages coupled by a transformer. The last gain stage is a Germanium boost so there's some natural clipping there.

      Super nice guy, I told him “price it and I’ll order one, I really want one”, and he advised me not to throw money for a pedal like that nowadays as people is charging ridiculous prices. Totally recommended, to me it is Bongripper in a box.

      And I'd have a pretty insane amount of gear for 6 months of playing! 🤣

    the BD2 totally could be a similar circuit the theories you described were all silly. Like looking at a Ferrari engine and thinking its the same as an LDV van engine because its git 8 cylinders. Or denying an old Lambourghini can do 130 mph because "that's a block that came out of a Tractor and they are slow".
    None of these theories are founded in reality. You could use the exact same components and just order them different and the pedal would sound totally different

    • @doctorfuzzzdirtbox
      @doctorfuzzzdirtbox  Год назад

      Thanks for the info. If you could explain in any more detail, that'd be great.
      As I state in the video, I'm a layman. I picked these pedals for what might be theorised the pedal is like or based on. I know first-hand that it sounds nothing like a BD-2. Only the basic description of the layout of the circuit comes anywhere close, so it's more about considering what conclusions people might draw before hearing it and debunking, than claiming anything.

      +1 on the mountain king megalith. But the megalith almost starts to sound synth like while the doomer keeps a lot of grit on the top end. Building a megalith is cake too. Also like 20 parts (+ knobs knobs knobs)

    • @theodorsloth2194
      @theodorsloth2194 Год назад

      @@clydebillingsworth8574 Yes, if you want the grit on the top, the Submachine exspecially in octave up mode is better. Moreover its suboctave is groundshaking. If you like grid, you could also chose the first version of the DBA Fuzzwar oder Zvex Mastotron or stack any octave up fuzz into a Muff (scooped) or Rat (middy).
      If the Doomer like other similar pedals is based on on or two LM386 chips, it has another problem: Its noisy and it has high power consumption up to 100mA because, the LM386 is actally a power amplifier. Compared to a Muff (2..3mA) this is very much current. For example the digital Boss RV-6 needs roundabout 70mA.

      There is no weak section to this pedal. I'm demoing the pedal, not the amp breakup, so the volume isn't raised enough to push the preamp.
