The imbalances of the crack shaft are compensated between both halves, so there is no vibration, but it increases the forces that the middle of the crank shaft has to support as each part of it is unbalanced. My guess is that if you go full power in gear at max rpm, it will fail, either instantly or after a bit of fatigue.

This has become my favorite automotive channel!
Removing the counterweights on an inline 4 cylinder engine doesn't really change the balance though. The counterweights are really only there to relieve flexing stress on the crankshaft on inline 4s.
This really needs to be tried on a V6 or V8 engine, which relies on its counterweights much more for engine smoothness.
    Great channel though, guys!

I was a car owner engineer and driver in circle track racing for many years.
Cutting off the crankshaft counter weights was done often. The engine would rev and produced more power at the expense of longevity. For short races it worked phenomenally. But for races more than 25 laps it would not live. Good for 20 laps though!!

@@missingno3617 nope. Pressurized oil enters the crank at the mains, travels to rod journals, where it then, on civilized engines has a rifle drill in the big end of the rod to a squirter. Or in less civilized manners, has a channel cut in the big end to let more oil spray toward the cylider. But in a small block Chevy, it just counts on that 360 degree spray out of the big end to make it there. And the small end just picks up loose oil floating around. There is really never a lack off oil moving around in a crankcase to get on the cylinder wall.

You got really lucky on how balanced it is. It should have ripped itself out of its mounts.
Back in the 80’s I bought my ex wife a Mercury Comet. It was like Ford’s Maverick. We got it used and I was in awesome shape. But one night when she got home from work she said it was running really rough. I told her I give it a tune up that weekend, but she said no, there’s something wrong with it. So we went outside and she star ted the engine while I looked under the hood to see what was wrong. The damn motor wanted to jump out of its mounts. I borrowed a timing light fr9m a friend and the timing was way off, like 105 degrees or something. I don’t know how much because the balancers aren’t marked that far. So the next night I borrowed a pulled from work and tried to pull the harmonic balancer, but the bolt wouldn’t budge. I borrows a breaker bar and a piece of pipe and finally got it loose, but the bolt was sheered off at an angle. So I drilled and tapped it, and used an easy out. I finally got that piece out and pulled the woodruff key so I could install the new balancer. But I couldn’t get the bolt in that crank. At that point I had a friend c9me over and we managed to get a look at the snout of the crank and there was a third piece of the bolt still lodged in it. We finally got that out and while we were underneath the car we discovered that it had been in a front end collision. The entire doghouse, subframe and all had been changed. But whoever did it did a damn good job because. It took something major to find where it had been damaged. Anyway, after replacing the balancer it ran great. I loved that car and was going to build it up, but my ex got the car in the divorce.

if you watch the reving crank from the front the crank is going to look like someone trying to swing a hoola hoop around its waist , even when oiled normally its going to wear out the center bearings and snap eventually
could pump oil intoo the oil pickup using a pump and a hose and just let the oil flail around when the engines running and clean the floor up afterward
you can hack parts off the counterweights give whats left a knife edge so it has less resistance rotating through oilvapour in the pan
fit forged aluminium rods , weigh out the small ends and pistons to match and get pretty close to balanced again (need a balancing machine to see if its good) , it will still wipe out the middle bearings though but will rev to the moon

i think what most of us want to see is an engine stretched to it' s limits. if it blows up well we still learned something. what is bad to watch is abusing an engine just for fun. waste not, want not.
leaving the oil pan off was not good - we know that will tear up an engine in short order. so it blows up and we rally have not learned a thing. a waste of an engine.
i have often wondered about the weights on a crankshaft. i just don't see how they can help. i would love to see an engine without the counterbalancing weights put to the test.

That's where they'd notice the drastic effects. The clutch will be weird, it'll engine brake more, it'll drop REVs a lot quicker when you engage the clutch, and so on. The weights on the crank are there for rotational mass. That's their purpose. You won't notice much of anything about rotational mass sitting still with no load. Go for a drive, and it'll be like night and day.

It balances out because one piston/rod is always moving the opposite way than one other, thats why you dont´t need the counterweights, but the counterbalancing force between the rods/pistons increases through the cranks main journals and gives more stress on the crankshaft. Some engines does not have full counterweight. This is the best way (and most expensive) to design a crankshaft as lada has made it.
