Simon didn't fall in love with his own legend, he didn't demand humanity show their gratitude by making him king and naming a month after him - he willingly hung up his weapons, and went into quiet retirement. He says "I guess I'm no-one" with real humility and a smile, and doesn't cling to his past or pine for some idea of lost glory. That's possibly his most superhuman moment, to me.

@@FullMetalJackson very true. It shows the true maturity from Simon who went from a scared shitless kid, to idolising kamina, to the literal god of the universe and finally giving all of that up and choosing the path of humility. This show had a very similar effect on me tbh. When I was unsure of my own self-worth and was content to waste my days away as a nobody who would never move out from home or get a job, I found this series. It changed me, too. It made me look at the world in a new way. When my pop died, I was grief-stricken, and I didn't know what to do. This series showed me that even in the face of the death of a loved one, you can carry their will with you to keep them alive and strengthen yourself. I started using "Who the hell do you think I am" to psyche myself up. I AM damn important, and if you underestimate me, you'll be sorry. That kind of mindset may seem arrogant, but it got me to believe in myself. I got a job. I moved away from home. Started living with my girlfriend. And while I'm far from successful or rich, I'm also far from being done growing. We move forward, a little with each turn. That's how a drill works. And it's why Gurren Lagann saved me, and allowed me to become my best self.

I had a very similar experience with this Anime. In a way it changed my life and made me realize that I always wanted to do something great. However I also realized that I was a lot like Simone in the begging. Once I watched it I really started crying because I realized that I never believed in my self enough to do anything that wasn’t going to be easy for me. I stayed “digging my tunnels” because I was good at it. I did this to the point of never trying anything new because I thought everyone was going to be better at it than me so I didn’t even allow myself to try. Now I try new things and actively shoot for the stars because I became the me who believes in me! Thanks for making this video its nice to know I’m not the only person who took this series to heart and was transformed by it.

Just like youve watcher gurren lagann over 100 times ive watched the fight like 40+ (im gonna catch up to you soon ) I know every piece of dialogue in that fight and the one that sticks out the most is when Might Gai said "You're right all that hard work and effort is pointless if you dont believe in yourself " followed up by "Go out there and make me proud, be the person who you want to be, will you do that for me Lee ? " every time i hear does lines i cry my eyes out and then i feel the power of youth boost me forward. I think this entire fight is so easy to relate to. Everybody can sympathize with lee because we all see ourselves in him. If he falls we fall and when he gets back up it inspires us to get back up as well despite what everybody says or thinks. Kamina teaches Simon to believe in himself for the sake of those around him who believe in him. But we quickly learn that this is not sustainable, as Simon seeps into darkness after Kamina, his inspiration and source of motivation and self-confidence, dies. He has no reason to believe in himself anymore. That's why later, Nia teaches him that he is someone of value too, giving him new motivation and a regained self-confidence. Before that, Kamina had also told him to "believe in the you that believes in you". This is a very powerful thing to say, and represent Simon's growth from an insecure boy to a man. That's beautiful.
It's also powerful because it says more than just believing in yourself. It also tells you to modify your self-image, to believe in yourself. Beliefs and identity motivate our actions, behaviors, and habits in ways we often underestimate. We often set out to self-improve by focusing on what we should do, instead of who we are and what we believe. We set goals and actions, but ignore the identity and beliefs that will drive those very actions. That's why "believe in the you that believes in yourself" is so powerful. In this seemingly simple phrase, it tells you to modify your self-image to believe in yourself. It tells you to believe in the self-confident version of yourself. And it's made powerful because Kamina spent time showing Simon that Simon was capable of great things in the first half. There is a very good build-up from "believe in the me that believes in you" to "believe in the you that believes in yourself".
"believe in the me that believes in you" represents teamwork and leadership built upon trust. Kamina himself believes in himself because he believes in Simon. He said it himself that, whenever he felt discouraged, he remembered the back of Simon steadily digging.
Kamina is a great leader because he inspires the entirety of Team Dai Gurren to believe in him, and thus believe in themselves because Kamina believes in them, but he is strong as a leader because he believes in them. His leadership is built upon mutual confidence and trust.
"believe in the you that believes in yourself" represents confidence built upon a congruent self-image

I absolutely agree with this sentiment. I’ve been working on a story for most of my life thus far and it’s something very dear to my heart. As I write and re write, I’ve noticed touches of gurren lagann here and there that really left an impact on me. Even down to the simple cloak flutter when grown simon turns around, there is so many minor details that leave such s striking image in my mind. Kamina is one of my favorite characters in fiction, and his arc is something I still absolutely adore. I’ve met many people who are very lukewarm on the series, but gurren lagann will probably always remain one of the most important shows to me

I sooooo get where you're coming from. I was exact the same way. Gurren Lagan hit me at a time when I was at my most low. I dropped out of high school, was very overweight, and was bumming around doing nothing. The only thing that I had at the time was a dream of becoming a voice actor. But even then I never thought I could do it. I mean I dropped out of school, how could someone like me becoming a voice actor. But one day I said, why not. That changed everything for me. The why not mentality is truly strong. It helped me get my life together and is helping me fallow my dream of becoming a voice actor. It's believing in the you that you can become, not the you now.

Alan Watts had me reflecting on life before Gurren Lagann, but when I first saw Gurren I was basically screaming by the end. This is the greatest show I've ever seen. I always go back and the first thing I wanna do when I finish is watch it all over again. I could watch it on the daily for the rest of my life and never grow tired. I cry every time Libera Me from Hell plays.

Every now and then I watch an anime that just reminds me exactly why I love the medium of anime.
This year it was Mob Psycho.
In 2011 it was Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagan.
It was bold,it was fast,it was colorful and cheerful but it also had a lot of heart,it was surreal but also deep,it was ecentric in its plot and character and above all it was SO DAMM FUN!
So yeah this is an anime that will pierce the heavens and take its place amongst the star.

I had the same experience with this show. I adore it.
All of my favourite media have shaped me as a person in some way. The show that made me who I am today is without a doubt My Hero Academia, that show shot me down a path that permanently changed the course of my life. It’s the show that inspired me to write my first book, and the show that inspired me to start working out, and the show that inspired me to be heroic, which has impacted how I impact others. There’s only three pieces of fiction that have impacted me so profoundly, TTLG, MP100 and BNHA. I’m thankful to them.

For me, it's Doctor Who. That franchise has been inspiring me since the age of 4, before I could read, write or even tell time, I was captivated by re-runs of the 1st and 2nd Doctors. More recently, I have found my all time favourite incarnation of the Doctor in Doctor number 12. Although I love every incarnation of the Doctor, 12 was the one that I connected with the most. I was particularly moved by his personal struggles through the three seasons he was with us as he was the Doctor who struggled the most with the cynical and irate emotional baggage the character has built up over the course of millennia of trauma and loss. Watching 12 learn to deal with his anger, pessimism, regrets and self-doubts, while he struggled to be a compassionate and heroic individual really helped me face my own personal baggage. There are so many quotes from the Capaldi era that I just keep repeating to myself every time I am struggling with my illness; the most common being "Always try to be nice, but never fail to be kind," and "The Universe shows us its true face when it asks for help, we show ours by how we respond." And there are so many more great quotes from 12. I mean, the Zygon speech alone is one of the Doctor's greatest speeches.
I even see 12's regeneration into the ever so friendly 13th Doctor that as proof that if we keep working at bettering ourselves we can still become better versions of ourselves. Maybe I'm being a little overly dramatic with all of this, but I am someone who deals with emotional issues and antisocial tenancies, so characters like the Doctor (especially number 12) happen to mean a lot to me and I find their fictionally examples do help encourage me along my journey in becoming a better version of myself.
Great video, thank you for sharing your thoughts & experiences

I can absolutely relate to every single word you said about the “bond” between you and the series. When I first casually watched TTGL in the spring of 2013 at the age of 14, and being my name Simone, you understand that I literally found myself in anime version and so I fell in love with Simon, a character that really resembled me and that I could take inspiration from his growth.
Although at the time I could never imagine how important and impactful Gurren Lagann would become for me.
I still treasure my drill that I bought immediately after finishing the show, after almost 7 years later.
I love this show so much.
Believe me, it changed my life too.

Gurren Lagann was the first TRUE anime i ever watched. i was 13 or 14. there was nothing like that experience. now i’m 19 and as i age and look back i can’t help but love it more. some people label it as dumb fun. but the more i dig into it the more humility and wisdom that i find.
i have so much nostalgia and emotion attached to the show. i am undoubtedly biased. it’s amazing how special this show is. i’ve never seen anything else like it.

For me, Gurren Lagann is a pure source of energy just as it seems it was for you and many others, even without having been in a particularly depressed state of mind (or maybe I was but didn't realize it haha). The only other anime that really stick to me as a person are Code Geass and Steins Gate, both of which I need to rewatch. Whether it was the social commentary on the absoluteness of inequality, what drives humanity and what we seek, the shape of happiness, or that even in a world where everyone lives their own individual versions of life, we are all connected in ways far beyond our comprehension, these anime were very thought provoking and were media that had far greater meaning than the psychological thriller, drama or romance that made them entertaining to watch.

I have a Gurren Lagamn poster up on my wall. It's the only piece of anime memorabilia I own despite how much I watch. I've had depression my entire life, and Gurren Lagann brought me out of depression for a time when I first saw it, and it has always had that effect on me, no matter how many times I watch it, no matter how deeply depressed I get. I'm taking meds now, and it's been helping a lot. But more than anything, this attitude of optimism - in spite of grueling realities - in spite of unbeatable odds - in spite of bouts of nihilism and existential dread - it prescribes me a sense of calm and control. There are no strings attached to it. No gods. No belief systems. No need for their to be anyone around. No need for me to even believe in myself on any level. Because I can tell myself, somebody would believe I can do it, so why the hell not?
The attitude of complete refusal to have my will broken by anything. It's a life-fuel that refills itself. I WILL make it happen. And if it doesn't happen- No. I will make it happen. Full stop. Even if the reality is that things don't always work out, even if I know the odds are stacked against me, if this is what I really want, I have to disregard those odds. I have to disregard the naysayers, be they myself or others, and do it anyway. Doubt is nothing but an imaginary wall in need of being broken through by a stubborn mind. That's what I took from the series.

Gurren Lagann changed my life too, and whenever I feel down or unmotivated, just listening to the opening/ost or big scenes give me that power up that makes me instantly smile and just feel good really. Gurren Lagann is an amazing creation, both as a series and as an artistic piece of work. The over the top characters and action with the over the top in your face motto of DOING THE IMPOSSIBLE really became my own motto in life. And as an artist, this kind of message where you need to go beyond and do the impossible, do something you wouldnt even think of, and becoming great at it is a very powerful one. Gurren Lagann is so good. Much much love mate. Great to see others who have the same passion for a show I so Highly love.

I had always heard of this anime. I remember it being insanely popular in the late 2000s. Thought it was overrated and overhyped like Eva. But after watching it a couple of years I am quite mad at myself for passing this up. This anime is the anime I always go to if I'm sad or mad it always cheers me up. Just like you this anime changed my life, there isnt a deep plot or big theme. It's about a kid becoming a man. After watching the second movie I can honestly say that the Final battle in the second anime is the greatest scene of animation I have witnessed and nothing has topped it. I discovered Gurren Lagann at the lowest point of my life.
It's optimistic message was key into climbing out of the hole I dug myself into called Depression.
Simon's character development was especially important to me because the driving force of my depression (or at least a good amount of it) was that I had lost someone very dear to me and didn't know how to deal with the grief. I felt Simon's greif as if it were my own, it spoke to me on a level no other story ever had. It showed me that your life doesn't have to stop because you lost someone. It doesn't mean you've forgotten that person or what they meant to you if you continue to move forward with your life.
And if Simon could do it, so could I. And eventually, I did. I probably would have found my way out of that hole without Gurren Lagann but it came to me just when I needed it most.
And the best part? It's been 6 years and I haven't fallen back into any form of depression again.

Hello, I hope you see this. I watched this video a little over a month ago. It peaked my interest in this show just to give it a try. I started watching it a few weeks after and it was ok and kind of slow at the beginning but I stuck with it. I finally decided to binge it from episode 5 to the end two days ago. I am so happy I did. This was a great anime. I love Kamina and his catch phrase. I found myself saying this to my wife. The episode when Simone finally got his confidence and beat the mole general was my favorite. I loved his development and how he gained the confidence in himself. It brought me to tears. I didn't like how some of his friends tried to play him in season 2. But thank you soooo much for recommending this. Believe in the me that believes in you now sticks with me.
