    We in the US should be growing our own bananas, bamboo (which already grows near DC), pineapples, coconuts (for their products), palm and many other things that we rely on other countries for and that have to be shipped enormous distances.

      I see you been here too! lol :)
      I was also gonna ask, do you water it much?
      being in florida i know its very dry most of the time and they like very moist heat.
      If your soil mix drains well i would soak them down pretty good daily.
      ;)

    Kerry Amick- -That is correct once the bananas are harvested cut the stem back to let the younger surrounding ones fill in. It doesn’t have to be 2 days just the sooner the better. Fertilize with a balance fertilizer during the active growing season. That can be a slow release fertilizer or an granular organic. If using a chemical or salt fertilizer just don’t overdo it. With that said they need a continuous supply of nutrients for them to fruit well. It will also bring the plant in to flower sooner.

    My Banana tree (Dwarf) planted in my yard has finally bloomed and I have my 1st banana harvest coming. Since this is my first harvest, the tree is 7 years old, I am getting alot of advice about what to do after the harvest. I have been told to trim the shoot back all the way to the ground about two days after the harvest. Is that correct? Also how often and with what should I be fertilizing? I am in planting zone 9.

    I think I understand a little better what's happening now...So What you're saying is, once the bananas come out, that "arm" (for a lack of a better word), is "done", it will never grow bananas again...or will it?!?

    • @LogeesPlants
      @LogeesPlants  8 лет назад +7

      +Pete Mininni Not only the ‘arm’ will never fruit again but the entire growth or pseudostem from which emerged and will in time even die off. So a banana growth, stem or tree only flowers once. Then a new growth which forms at the base of the original growth will take over and start the cycle again.

    • @mikkeljylland9153
      @mikkeljylland9153 7 лет назад +1

      I worked in a cuban banana plantation some years ago. First we made a cut in the "arm" to make the cluster of bananas come lower. then we cut the arm completely and removed the bananas. Then we cut of the leaves and stem and chopped it to bits and moved on (or had a breake and drank moonshine).

    I read online that banana plants not grown from seeds. But yet i see many banana plants seeds sellers online. How come? For example i want to grow dwarf cavendish and search online for its seeds and there are a lot of sellers...

    • @LogeesPlants
      @LogeesPlants  5 лет назад +1

      Some bananas can be grown from seeds, however, the ones that we grow are generally from taking pups from our mother plants.

    Is it possible to predict which side of the plant the flower will droop? Perhaps towards the sun?

    At what height should I expect to see these flower? I purchased 2 of them in 5 gallon containers. Also how do I keep them at a manageable height? I don't want them growing taller than 6ft? BTW I purchased 2 guavas from Logees and they look great.
    Thanks

    • @LogeesPlants
      @LogeesPlants  8 лет назад +4

      The word Dwarf does not always mean small. Some dwarf bananas mature and thus flower a 8ft or more. While others one like our Dwarf lady finger will flower at 4 ft. The dwarf Cavendish usually flower at 6-8 ft. and the surper dwarf will flower under 5 ft. The height is also regulated by the light level. Plants receiving lower light can cause them to grow taller. And also restricting the container size can reduce the size somewhat.

    • @LogeesPlants

      Yes and no They are selected clones that have reverted from the original larger form. So they are genetic mutations not necessarily hybridized by man.

    how much water is required for the Dwarf banana tree. sorry grass..?

    • @LogeesPlants
      @LogeesPlants  8 лет назад +2

      +Andy M If grown in pots they need to be water when the soil looks dry but before any drought stress shows .ie. wilting. They don’t want to have soggy soil for long periods of the time. If grown in the ground they need a well-drained spot and irrigation if there is no rain for a week or so. We have well drained soil where are hardy bananas grow and they are watered couple times a week in the summer.

    Can the banana tree grow in the state of New York and what kind of variety

    • @LogeesPlants
      @LogeesPlants  7 лет назад

      The only one that would make it outside is the Basjoo and it would need a good mulch to winter successfully. Tropical ones can be grown indoors where temperatures don’t go below freezing.
