Your the man, David! Love watching you on tv and ever since! God speed!
Thanks Dave! FYI, a regular size Bic Lighter weighs about 24 Grams when Full, and about 14 when empty (at Room temperature). Found this out while trying a RUclips Refill Hack. But I also got a Roll of ORANGE Gorilla Tape, and no matter what the Color of the Original Lighter, I put a few turns around it. So if I just HAVE to have a piece of Tinder RIGHT NOW, there it is, right on the lighter. Hope this helps.
Great tip David
Cool video Dave. thanks for sharing.
Short and to the point. Nice dude.
neat little trick - always a pleasure to get a glimpse of your skills!
Good one Dave. Back when I smoked I carried a Zippo lighter. When the flint ran out we would put two flints in it which the spring would allow. You could also put extras in the cotton. Just a thought. Thanks for sharing and God Bless.
Great advice. Thanks as always, Dave.
And yet another survival hack. Great stuff Dave.
Excellent tip brother
Right on Dave!
Dave the fire bug ! Thanks brother great mod for a Bic. Thanks
Thanks Dave , very good lesson
thanks Dave love it cheers.
Dave. I just found your channel. Awesome work. A fellow "old school" 95B.
Great tip. Love that next fire mentality. Grew up in the woods of western PA fishing hunting, my cousins all trapped, a simpler time. Like your videos and how you explain and show stuff
Outstanding tip Dave! Thanks so much for sharing that information! God bless brother!
Sound advice as always brother! Best wishes friend! 👍🏽👍🏽😀🔥🔥
Thanks again! Great tip, short and simple, love it
awesome Dave thanks for this simple but helpful video :)
That's one to remember for sure. Thank you.
Thank You Master!
Great job Dave God bless
A must see video 👍👌👏👏👏👏🙌🙌🙌🙌
Excellent tip!
Thanks for that mate 👌👍🇬🇧
I do the same with my Zippo. I have a lot of flint stored under the layer. Great video. Nice way to save fuel. Thank You. L&R.
use a clipper instead of a bic ;) you can refill gas and change the flintstone. on the clipper the flintstone mechanism can be taken apart and be used for sparks without the lighter. small and good for a survival box. the good thing with bic is that the flintstone is about 2 times bigger as to other normal lighters... so when the bic lighter get´s out of gas it´s worth taking apart to reuse the flintstone, for example in a clipper lighter ;)
You are a great resource and I'm a huge fan. But while you didn't expend any fuel isn't it just as bad to be flicking that wheel 13 times to get an ember? The flint in these is a finite thing too.
The flint will outlast the fuel by a good margin for sure on these devices
good observation
R Oliver this is some basic ideas, for an emergency situation!! The fuel will run out, eventually!! And you don't want to throw away a good resource!! In a calm dry condition, you would want to conserve fuel as much as possible!! So using the flint only, could extend the value of that resource! Of course, in a endless resource situation, it wouldn't matter!! And any one should already have a flint/steel on hand!! This is an idea for just in case!
thx dave
thanks for teaching us a lot of good things. i have a sugestion regarding this video. first thing to "dissapear" when using a lighter is not fuel but ferocerium
I use a Bic lighter everyday. I can say 100% that the fuel will run out long before the flint.
Can't use the fluid without the flint, but you can use the flint without the fluid. Therefore, you should consider using the fluid up first and then move to charred material with just the flint after the fluid is gone. Besides... a Bic Max is supposedly good for 3,000 flames.
According to the bic website and their advertising, you can get 3000 lights out of a bic maxi j6, which I think is the standard kind you've got in the video. I couldn't find if anyone has tested that, but it makes me wonder if it's true. On top of that, I wonder how long the striker lasts after you're our of fuel.
Great tip thanks
Good to know!
if your bic is nearly empty, you can pry the metal guard off, bend it flat and use it to pry up on the nozzle for one last light!
Yup!
That is why I watched you on Dual Survival and on your RUclips channel because you are a genius I would have never thought of making wood char to add to char cloth I keep all my lighters that run out of fluid just for that reason because it is an ignition source
Good idea! thank you for sharing with us.
Zipties work quite well too
Hey Dave, Have you guys considered using Dryer lint to make your Charcloth. in a months time you can gather quite a bit of lint.
Hey Dave, I live in east Texas tried buying Pyrex black powder, and 12 gauge primers .Apparently they don't sell any more at walmart. I'll try again in Tx.
Nice, ill take note of this.
Clippers are the way to go if u run out of fuel u can always refill them and if u have flints for a Zippo u can always change out the flints cause where the wheel is u can pull that sucker out and use it as a flint wheel
Neat idea!!
Smart move with using the flint only in the lighter.
Hi Dave, that was an awsome trick. MaritimeSpook sent me over but I was a big fan of yours back when you were on DS. Keep up the great videos. Still a huge fan
I must be spoiled because I carry multiple lighters, matches, & other fire making equipment. This can help conserve butane, but what if you loose the use of one of your hands? Will you be able to manipulate the cord to get the lighter back in action?
Put a rubber O-ring on your lighter before going out. You can roll it down and strike the lighter with one hand as normal, and roll it back up to use Dave's method when needed.
Legal David!!!
Will David, I'm an fart and have never seen or thought about that .As to the locking of the lighter i don't have that problem still using my dad's light from ww2 with striker not expose plus I made a steel box for it in metal shop back in the 50's . Happy Trails .
O Brasil ti admira muito, parabéns. Sou André de Apucarana PR Brasil #tamujunto
Greetings partner will it be possible to activate the option of the subtitutlos ...? since my native language is Spanish and in all of the past years I have been able to enjoy your videos because they have that active option to translate your videos, thank you and I congratulate you for your work and your videos ... from Venezuela Atte GER4. 0
Gr8 idea sir
I'd say if going this route.....dont try to catch the sparks on the char cloth. Lay the char cloth down and put the lighter upside down onto it.
I wrap my lighter with hemp wick. I light the wick quickly and use it to start the fire or to warm my small titanium stove.
That's a great idea.
thank you nice vid
Great tip .....does your mind ever rest?
I have a hair elastic around mine in my b.o. bag (cause I'm a long hair hippie) but I read a comment below ..graham uses an "O" ring for his... great idea..it wouldn't loose it's elasticity so fast..
instead usig bic maybe you will find clipper lighter. is made in spain and you can replace and detach feroceriun ignition rock. it's easy to find clipper in europe
But at the same time that you're conserving the fuel you are excessively using the spark if you where the spark out and you have a lot of with no fuel because you used up your spark or your sparker became dislodged and came out of the lighter now you have a lighter with fuel and no spark so you're still using the same issues you just rearrange the priorities although it can be a useful tip if you use the two and conserving the spark and the fuel appropriately it could prolong the life of the lighter all together but it's a fine line to walk
The flint will far outlast the fluid
Awesome
the learning never stops awesome idea
Smart !!
Cool!
The Bic lighters have a much larger flint in them so it will last longer
More Gold Dave ! Thanx Brotha !! ,;,;, Spook
I use the wife hair the lol. Great work Dave, never thought of using it like that on char
Why a bic ??
Personal preference??
Heard cold temp and/or altitude but my 50c lighter wrks in both
Just curious !!
Steven Fields do you smoke?
Keep some dryer lint in your fire starter tin.
Use the lighter to light a hemp wick.
Best way to conserve your lighter fluid.
When your out of fluid you can pry metal guard off, hold gas down, and flick it to get a small flame out of a dead lighter.
I understand the mentality but char cloth cant be made of just anything. I can ony carry so much cotton and jute. Can you do a video on char materials that can be found on the wild. I know sone tree fungus but woyld like to see more. The fuel on a lighter is cheap and light but char materials may be scarce once my bandana is gone. And it cant do any other jobs if i char it.
Lego How check out Keith Burgess channel he discusses the Longhunter use of natural char material and explains the char cloth would've only been used in the homes and not outdoors and why
Lego How
You can use a piece of charred wood from the fire.
Lego How Dave has a bunch of videos on making fire, ad well as char cloth and char from natural materials he gathers. I suggest taking a look through those. Well worth the time.
Lego How - Two words, punk wood.
What do you really need to know besides, if it will burn when dry then it will char? The degree to which it holds together and how long it holds an ember are all that really separates potential materials.
Semper Fi
You can use a rubber band to protect your bic as well....
Great way to reserve the liter Fantatic
emergencies sure sound like fun. i keep hoping one happens so i can survive it and feel cozy. but emergency never happen. make me sad.
Is that a Sons of Anarchy shirt?!
You have a great resource in knowing well in times of distress like maybe coming very soon as well I was looking observing Jupiter in the early night sky kind of high just off to the left of Orion's belt at its zenith... delete morning 2 a.m. to check it again and Jupiter head drop down that's going against the turn of the Earth as it spins into the east BlackPlanet must be in our solar system because Jupiter is supposed to keep going moving to the West something's up bud. Cager. KJ.
Steel wool and a 12v battery will start a fire.
So will a 9v battery and much safer/smaller
Someone should make a lighter with a lock on it. That way the button wont get pressed while in your pocket and leak out any fuel.
that's genius!
If anyone can do it Dave can. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Zippo is great, I hate disposable lighters,,,, everything is just use and chuck it in the trash now days :^(
Sorry tried to buy in Louisiana " the sports mans paradise"
what kind of a loser would "thumbs down" this video....?
dw3 wyant the kind who would die in the wilderness.
kind of loser who's BIC ran out gas and didnt saw this video before.
Doesn't really matter. RUclips's algorythem sees all thumbs up or down as "viewer engagement" so they might as well have thumbed it up.
Neos Neos : lmao
I R make fire with dryer lint, prestolog, Flint striker. You have a campfire in backyard ta da!!
👍First 😊
First
This is good for any storage, from pants pocket to bug out bag. I've had full lighters empty without use?
