You've have made your tutorials so delightful and easy to follow for someone like myself who hasn't played the flute in many years. Thanks again
I always find myself laughing real hard watching your videos! And I've been getting really great tips from you. Subscribed!
I love your vids! Please keep up the great work. This really helped me.
AHH. You're really good! My band teacher heard me playing the flute at one point apparently and he said I may be able to swtich! YAY! And I've been playing for 4 months. Your videos really did help inspire me:)
My daughter started 6th grade and chose the flute. She will be 11 in November. Your video's are fantastic. She actually sat through each video you made. They are simple yet very informative. Each example you have provide works. Bye the way she is a swimmer too..yay! Thanks for your help
Thank you so much from doing this video I'm starting the flute on Monday It would be amazing if you could do more of these videos
Thanks a lot, Teacher Joanna! Informative, formative and ENTERTAINATIVE!
When you talked about the bit about people impersonating Darth Vador, I actually laughed out loud. I'm a new flutist and this was helpful! Subscribed!
Oh my goodness! This was so helpful! I have always had bad breathing but the Darth Vader analogy helped me so much!
Ha! I totally did the Vader thing :D Just wanted to say your videos are the best. I'm musical but never played the flute. Trying to help my daughter learn (they only have band practice once a week :( ) and your style of teaching is excellent for us. Keep making these babies!!!! Thanks so much.
thank you so much for mentioning about the fact that your students who tend to be swimmers have better control of their breathing- i've been wondering for forever now because i play flute and im currently in marching band plus the only sport i do is swim and swimming can be hard, just like playing the flute (because a lot of air is required for both) at times. this was a curiosity of mine for quite some time now. thanks for covering about this even though this is the second vid i watched today of your channel. im really glad i subscribed.
Keep posting! Your videos are so helpful. THANK YOU
This was so beautiful and helpful, thank you! Definitely subscribing
I'm a male flutistttt:) You're one of my role models, and you always make me laugh! Thank you!
You gave me a very nice time! Thanks for the funny and great video. :)
Hi Joanna! Long time, no see. Love this video! Not only fun but educational. I'm thinking the word "delightful" is a fitting description.
Brava, competente e simpatica: Il massimo. Complimenti per la lezione. :)
Awww, that's great! I'm glad I was of help. :) All the best!
Hey! First of all, I love ur videos! I'm only just starting flute. I was wondering if you could make a video about some great flute breathing excersices? Thanks!!!!!
I played the trumpet, which requires a lot of air! One thing I learn from my band teacher is to breath by "expanding your stomach", not through the upper part of the chest ... :D
you're crackin me up over here. good stuff. :-)
Thanks for your videos! They're great! Your humor makes them especially First RATE!
Your so talented! how often do you practice? or do you have a specific routine? Great humor i couldn't help but smile everytime i watch one of your videos. :)
Simplesmente você é a melhor professora de flauta que já vi.
Contudo, também é a única que já vi...
mas isso não importa, o que importa é que você é incrível, obrigado.
(o idioma que escrevo é em português, pois estou com preguiça de traduzir)
Oh and you are a wonderful flute player...I hope all of your dreams come true.
You are a really good flautist
THIS IS AWESOME. Thank you for your help! :)
Oh my gosh!!!!!!! You're HILARIOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ps. I did do they dark vader thing! Hahaha! Thanks for the vid!:)
Very information and entertaining.
That's actually a really great question, hahahahaha--I am currently pursuing a master's degree in flute performance, so I'm basically playing all the time. It's my school and work, so... yeah, basically all the time. I do have routines, but I change it up often so I can practice different and new skills. And thank you for the support!!! I'm glad I make you smile!! :D
It does't matter how long I can hold my breath for! The second I apply it to the flute I find I'm still releasing all the air too quickly... HOW do you improve this?
I have the same issue.
i used to have the same problem. My music teacher taught me how to control it. (Sorry in advance if this dosen't make much sense.) So, when you take a big breath, you have to let it out in small intervals. You sort of have to store it in your chest when you do this. In order to get out a good sound that is in tune, you don't use more air, you speed it up. The same goes for going to play piano. You would naturally assume you need less air. That's not the case. You use the same amount of air, just less fast.(?) in order to keep your pitch when playing soft you need lots of air, but not so fast. Basically, fast air for higher notes, and slower air (but not too slow) for lower notes. Its hard to explain over text. I also find it helpful to flex your core when having to hold out a note for and extended amount of time. Another trick, is to tilt your head up when playing the flute because this action alone speeds up your air. Lifting your eyebrows helps and lifting your feet off of the ground is a good trick. So when you play the flute, you have to control your air in small intervals and store the rest for later use. I hope this is somewhat helpful. Practice makes perfect!
Jim Harrell, So what about playing high notes piano? You said that playing piano requires slowing down your air, not using less air, but you also said that you slow down your air to play lower notes.
This is old, but, try making your airstream thinner
You must control how fast you blow your air. It comes with experience
Please make a vidoe about.how to get high and low notes please, u r the best flute teacher ever!!:)
thank you for helping me for a beginer♡
Very helpful!
I love your personality...Nice video, I gave you a thumbs up...I play the Native American flute and it is much easier than the flute you play but I will still benefit from your great tips.....
That Darth Vadar example really helped.
awsome video
2:28 That's it.... that's what I needed to understand.... there it goes all the other videos I watched, this made it
yes! you finished the phrase - it eases my ear's suspense xD lol
you're so cute xD this has helped me so much, you have no idea, i actually have trouble breathing because of my lungs but this helped me alot x) thanks
thx that really helped me
Thank you! :)
I have to play Concerto No. 2 too for an audition
at swim (team) we have to do brathing sets and most time doing a 50m (2 laps) with one breath! its really fun!! ☺☺
Can u please help me with my flute breathing excersises??
I watched this video in band I I couldent stop laughing your awesome🦄
Aw, thank you! :)
Haha, don't know. ;) Still formulating what I'll do for the next one... :)
I think this video is awesome! :D Quick question: How would you approach breathing in something as technical as the Ibert Concerto (I'm working on this for auditions as a transfer student)?
Hi, I've been play the flute now for 3 years, I've always had breathing problems. Playing does hurt my chest. My band teacher told me to fill in my lower stomach. Any more tips?
If in a future video you could give some advice how to improve the tone (or recommend exercises, even from the Trevor Wye book) especially for the higher notes that would be great. I'm not satisfied with my middle register at all :)
I have a wooden whistle that was capped off on the end and has a hole drilled in the side so you can play it as a traverse flute. It is My hardest whistle to play because you can't just blow into it. It is a matter of using your diaphragm muscle to push breath to get it to sound right. It's more a matter of controlled breath. NOT blowing. It was hard to play, so I leaned into it hard for a week. My diaphragm muscle hurt like you would not believe. It takes a lot of control. A lot of reminding Myself to BREATHE. I keep getting winded and at times dizzy. I keep saying to Myself, "You can't play if you don't breathe". It's a great training tool and it sounds pretty good too. Maybe better than My Tin Whistles or My Maple fifes.
I'm a guy and I tried but it's just not possible
could you give us guys some advice of what to do in this situation?
Becuase we don't wear bras and even If we did we couldn't fill them.
When you are playing high notes, do you need to keep your stomach punched in and flat, or expanded like when you take in a breath?
Glad I could help! :)
What song was that u played. I quite enjoyed it.
Btw can u tell what that song is called?
can you please do a video comparing the materials of piccolos and maybe even the brands? Thanks :D
That's been on my list for a while. ;)
So I just got my flute 4school and don't know how to play but when I saw this video it helped me alot

Do you have any advice on being a professional flute

I have a hard time getting real low notes(like middle c) out. Do you have any tips? Thanks:))) Your videos are so helpful!
Can you do a video on circular breathing?
how do you make a rounder tone on, for example, Carmen Act 3, Entr'acte? I keep getting a really sharp sound and its bugging me and my exam is next week. help!!
What was that little ditty that she played at the end?
I just love your video xD I wish you could be my flute teacher in real life meh.... XD
ME TOOOOO! Yay Male Flutisttt
how do you practice dynamic control? tips/tricks?
Joanna, help, please. My tone is awful! Could you make a video how the emboucher and tilt of the flute affect the tone? Help please! Thanks, you're the man!
Very funny and helpful video
Excellent Adele impersonation! Very informative and entertaining video. Though a guy, I think I need to go buy a bra. LOL Thanks.
i imagine swimming at least on a weekly basis would help your breath control and capacity>? Do you swim to increase your flute play?
do you have a video on tone?
When's your next video? I can't wait! :D
damn, when u caught me trying the darth vader, i coughed out my nose lol.. it was painful, thanks.
I just started playing the flute yesterday and I can play about 6/7 notes, but when I play them in a song (like Marry Had a Little Lamb or Hot Cross Buns) they come out sounding REALLY breathy. No joke, it seriously just sounds like wind. What do I do!?
when you breathe in, does it also have a similar feeling when you yawn?
Cynthia Qian It feels very similar, but afterwards you should feel like you have extra air throughout your nose.
I know how to make the whistle sound, but when I try to play a note, I cant do it right. How do I make this work?
can you do a movie about high notes and registers please...
How do you play the high notes without going dramatically louder?
I can hold for pretty long on my saxophone but not that long on the flute. What am I doing wrong?
The difference is the saxophone creates resistance for you to blow against. The flute has no resistance so your job as a flutist is to create resistance. Take your deep breath and create support by pushing against your stomach muscles and controlling how fast the air comes. Right now all your air just comes in on its own. You have to control it. Hope this helps!
Help! I m a beginner,i swim pretty well, and I can blow for twenty seconds, but when I try to do a scale on the flute, it lasts for only 3 seconds or so, and I get light headed. Any tips?
Wish you where my music teacher mine is not good at teaching
You've probably already answered this but what flute do you play now??:O
Hahaha, you're sweet! Thank you! :)
Do u do flute covers
how to you make a sound on a flute? no matter how much videos i watch i still cant make a sound out of the flute!
How long have you been playing? Even professionals out there tell stories of not being able to make a sound of the flute for a month or two when they first started!
what music did u play?
Can't do that 😮😮
Can you do a video on articulation? I've gone the last 3 years playing flute without knowing I couldn't tongue -.-
Ok Hi . My band has to play colors of the wind and Groovee and Engines and resistance can you please play them so I can see how it sounds ... And 4 more ..
You are so funny and nice
