    thank you so much for mentioning about the fact that your students who tend to be swimmers have better control of their breathing- i've been wondering for forever now because i play flute and im currently in marching band plus the only sport i do is swim and swimming can be hard, just like playing the flute (because a lot of air is required for both) at times. this was a curiosity of mine for quite some time now. thanks for covering about this even though this is the second vid i watched today of your channel. im really glad i subscribed.

    It does't matter how long I can hold my breath for! The second I apply it to the flute I find I'm still releasing all the air too quickly... HOW do you improve this?

    • @infamousBlader
      @infamousBlader 7 лет назад

      I have the same issue.

    • @harrelljme
      @harrelljme 7 лет назад +2

      i used to have the same problem. My music teacher taught me how to control it. (Sorry in advance if this dosen't make much sense.) So, when you take a big breath, you have to let it out in small intervals. You sort of have to store it in your chest when you do this. In order to get out a good sound that is in tune, you don't use more air, you speed it up. The same goes for going to play piano. You would naturally assume you need less air. That's not the case. You use the same amount of air, just less fast.(?) in order to keep your pitch when playing soft you need lots of air, but not so fast. Basically, fast air for higher notes, and slower air (but not too slow) for lower notes. Its hard to explain over text. I also find it helpful to flex your core when having to hold out a note for and extended amount of time. Another trick, is to tilt your head up when playing the flute because this action alone speeds up your air. Lifting your eyebrows helps and lifting your feet off of the ground is a good trick. So when you play the flute, you have to control your air in small intervals and store the rest for later use. I hope this is somewhat helpful. Practice makes perfect!

    • @froskonic1854
      @froskonic1854 7 лет назад

      Jim Harrell, So what about playing high notes piano? You said that playing piano requires slowing down your air, not using less air, but you also said that you slow down your air to play lower notes.

    I have a wooden whistle that was capped off on the end and has a hole drilled in the side so you can play it as a traverse flute. It is My hardest whistle to play because you can't just blow into it. It is a matter of using your diaphragm muscle to push breath to get it to sound right. It's more a matter of controlled breath. NOT blowing. It was hard to play, so I leaned into it hard for a week. My diaphragm muscle hurt like you would not believe. It takes a lot of control. A lot of reminding Myself to BREATHE. I keep getting winded and at times dizzy. I keep saying to Myself, "You can't play if you don't breathe". It's a great training tool and it sounds pretty good too. Maybe better than My Tin Whistles or My Maple fifes.

    I can hold for pretty long on my saxophone but not that long on the flute. What am I doing wrong?

    • @DoctorFlute
      @DoctorFlute 6 лет назад

      The difference is the saxophone creates resistance for you to blow against. The flute has no resistance so your job as a flutist is to create resistance. Take your deep breath and create support by pushing against your stomach muscles and controlling how fast the air comes. Right now all your air just comes in on its own. You have to control it. Hope this helps!
