@Melody Ann Herring McNeely I watched a documentary about Eva. It was presented there that the recordings were made post diagnosis. I knew my cancer diagnosis was coming even before the surgeon confirmed it. I'm sure she knew something was wrong.
The longing is what makes her version so incredible. It's that last "really do come true"... the way she says really, it's like she's trying to will that peaceful place into reality.
Bro! She OWNS this song! And every other song I've ever heard her sing. You may not know this, but eight months after this performance, Eva died of cancer. She was only in her early 30s and unknown outside the Washington DC area where she lived. Three years later she was "discovered" by the BBC in England, and to this point, her albums have sold over ten million copies. Thank you for listening to her, and reacting. I loved watching your face as she took you with her on that personal journey over the rainbow.
Why does this angel make me cry everytime I hear her I'm a man whats going in no other singer does this have you heard these versions with the London symphony orchestra outstanding best female singer of all time rip eva
This song was played on UK radio -- and the requests for it exploded. Out of that she became famous, and the fame reached the US. She was from Maryland. Tears -- she died so very young.
What a terrible and sad loss to us all, Eva died at only 33 years old, but my God what a musical legacy she left us all to enjoy for the rest of our lives. My God rest her dear sweet soul.
You don't just hear Eva Cassidy's sing. You feel it. ❤️ The first time I heard her beautiful voice on the radio. It was music love from then on. May she RIP.
I could hear that 50 times a day and still get teary eyed every single time. she passed away just a few months after this performance and I want this played at my funeral.
When you realize this is a camcorder live performance made back in 1996, shortly before her death do to cancer, without any of the today's technology to enhance a live video, you have to be moved by how much emotion she puts into it. Her guitar playing is equally spectacular balanced with her singing. Her fingers and vocal cords are in perfect syncopation from the first to last note.
That was such a beautiful rendition of this song. So sad that she is no longer with us. She died at only 33 years of age. I also love the version by Israel Kamakawiwoʻole. Sadly he also died young at 38 years of age. At least we have their music left as a legacy.
Unlike Iz, Eva actually knew the lyrics to Over The Rainbow! (But then she didn't record it on impulse in the small hours of the morning like Iz did, either.)
I read that she passed at 36 and I have a 36 year old daughter and I can't imagine losing her. So young and so very talented, it's a shame but I can see why the angels in heaven needed her there.
Good Lord Above Her Voice Is Heaven I Wish Eva And Karen Carpenter Were Still Here With Us Would Love Too Here Them Singing Together Maybe They Are ❤️💔
She was discovered by Chuck Brown, the Godfather of Go-Go in DC and he was just getting ready to push her out to the public when she got cancer. She died in her early 30's. It was after her passing that people started to hear her angelic voice.
And we must never forget she played the acoustic guitar as well so beautifully. This demanded skill and attention. And she seemed so alone and sad as she deeply moved our hearts. It struck me as a Lament for the vagaries of our lives - asking questions - simple questions - that impact us but have no definitive answers. Yet we must carry on: The Rainbow for Eva was Heaven. Thank-you.
Eva Cassidy is a legend that not everyone knows about. It is sad because she was early in her career in 1996 when she passed away, and had the potential to be the greatest singer of our time. This is considered one of the finest versions of this song ever recorded, and Eva did her own arrangements of all her songs. I have two favorite female vocalists. One is Eva and the other is Angelina Jordan. Angelina is just turning 17, but started singing at age one and a half! She won Norway's Got Talent at the age of seven! A couple of years ago she recorded Fields of Gold as well. A superfan then made a mashup video of a virtual duet of Eva Cassidy and Angelina Jordan singing it together. It is absolutely beautiful. I hope you will look into it and also look to discover more about Angelina. It is a deep rabbit hole and well worth pursuing. Angelina is one of the most requested young singers on RUclips with approximately 200 performances recorded from ages 6 to 16. Here is the link to the mashup video... ruclips.net/video/Pczc6OTeNRw/видео.html Here is a wonderful link to a documentary on Angelina Jordan's early years. I don't think you've seen a young girl's background like this. ruclips.net/video/jE6x9V8Cnyw/видео.html
Eva -- fire and ice. The Muse tounched her -- then Time her took her away -- but her voice lives as long as we can lsten -- close -- to such beauty -- rare and pure.
Goosebumps, every time. Eva had an awe inspiring voice across all genres, but when she did the slo w ballads, we got to experience one of the mot beautiful voices ever heard. She was taken from us much too young.
Great reaction. It was the year she died. I suspect she knew already what it was her life was heading toward. God sweerly bless you Eva. We're still loving you there beyond the rainbow.
Thank you so much for your reaction. Your soul was revealed. My motto is "If you can listen to Eva Cassidy and not cry, I don't want to know you. You're a good man.
I love seeing people experience Eva's music for the first time. It is a spiritual phenomenon. She was from just down the road from me in Bowie, MD and I only discovered her a couple of months before she passed away. Saw her play in a bar in Annapolis one night and several months later at a benefit concert (for her) at the Bayou in Georgetown. I'm telling you, I've never seen anyone move a crowd like Eva. Thanks for featuring this song on your channel and sharing the emotion she was able to evoke in you almost 30 years after she left us.
I am so glad you loved this song. I also didn't notice how quiet the audience was until you mentioned it. That fact meant so much to me, too. That realization of everyone being as moved by her song, in person, is something I won't forget! Thank you!
I have watched so many reactions to this gorgeous voice and it is amazing that the natural, raw reaction to her voice and spin on this song is universal. It was soul-changing for me the first time I heard it over 10 years ago. I still cannot get through this song without bawling and being deeply moved emotionally. The fact that she died not long after this takes it to another level of haunting and melodic beauty.
Her version of Kathy's song is out of this world. I'm sure i read somewhere that she never became really well known till she passed away. Lovely voice. Two songs you'll also get the chills too are Hazel O'Connor - Will you Joan Armatrading - Love and affection Lovely reaction James
My mum was an amazing singer . She now has Parkinson’s disease and that voice is gone. She used to sit on my bed and sing lullaby’s to me when I was a little boy. Eva Cassidy reminds me of that time and that feeling. Very maternal and beautiful. A truly special artist .
I am a John martyn nutcase fan … love that ! But this song does me in. Some phrases here in this song melt me and I need to be by myself as I would have tears after the song. So emotional.
Man oh Man JB. If ever there ever was a perfect reaction to a perfect song...brother, this was it. Dont think this one can be topped. (.) This comment coming from an old guy that has saved into a file over 3k reactions to just Dimash alone. Sick right? Thank u from the bottom of my heart. I guess it's been about 3 years or so since I first listened to Eva do this song. I became an instant fan. It was a suggestion pop up on U Tube after watching IZ do Over the Rainbow. Eva's version made me feel like I had finally HEARD the song. Your words captured everything sir. Perfectly. I been a fan of ur reactions thru Dimash, Chris Stapleton, NF, HomeFree, LZ, classic oldies, etc. U have always connected on a personal level to songs that mean alot to me as well. Just...thank u man for this. I think I recommended Eva to u a few years back. Thank u man for doing this. Mark
Brother JB, I've probably heard her sing this a couple of hundred times over the years. Last night, was watching a few reactions to this and I still have to fight back the tears..
This sweet Angel passed away only a few months after this one and ONLY performance. She was only 33 when she died of Melanoma Cancer. She was a blessing from GOD but he clearly needed her lovely voice in heaven more so we can all look forward to hearing her when we are " somewhere over the rainbow" just as she is now. She died in 1996 and was relatively unknown, but someone called into a radio station in the UK and requested this version. When it was played, literally THOUSANDS of people requested this song and she became famous, but by then, God had taken her. May God tell her how much she has blessed us, and we are still listening! R.I.P. sweet Angel.
In tears. Thank goodness we have this from her, and the few selections we are able to hear. What a loss, it would be incredible to have her with us still. What a loss to her family and to us, to pass away at 33. Eva OWNS this song. Judy is my favorite artist, but Eva is incredible.
Such a beautiful voice, so sad she passed so young. My favourites of hers: It Doesn't Matter Anymore, Way Beyond the Blue, How Can I Keep From Singing?, Penny to My Name, Hallelujah I Love Him So, Early Morning Rain, etc, etc.
This brings tears to my eyes every time and I've heard it dozens and dozens of times. I love watching the reactions of her taking people apart. What you said about controlling an audience, it reminded me of the time I was at GM place in Vancouver to see Carlos Santana. It's a pretty big stadium but at the beginning of the show when Carlos stood up to the microphone to speak, something amazing happened that I've never seen before or since at a concert. Suddenly the whole place went completely silent. Like you say, you could have heard a pin drop. The first thing Carlos said was, "wow man, it's like a church."
Oh yes! I discovered Eva's music years ago...even have a few of her CDs! She d an amazing voice... so soothing. Thank you for reminding me to revisit her music! It is sad that she is gone... all the good ones go far too young!
Eva wasn't too well here, although you wouldn't have known ❤️ Eva was brought to the forefront bye the late Terry Wogan on Radio 2 in Britain.he plugged her on his Radio show, unfortunately Eva never lived to see. What a wonderful rendition ❤️
All of her performances are grand slams. She had the voice of an angel. She’ll pull a tear out of you with her renditions of Autumn Leaves and Time After Time.
I'll be brief, this is one of the finest performances I have ever heard in my life.
Eva’s rendition of FIELDS OF GOLD is fabulous. Let’s face it, anything she sang was beautiful and heartfelt. So sad that she died so young.
Autumn Leaves
The best version of this song EVER👌❤️
Agree !!
Best version of Any song ever....THE BEST
Eva Cassidy passed away at the age of 33 but not before leaving the gift of her talent, sensitivity and soul. May she rest in peace.
The original is full of hopeful anticipation, Eva’s is a desperate longing. I love this version

She was THE deal! Her voice was too pure and angelic for us mere mortals.

I regret that Eva didn't live to enjoy her accolades. She was one of the best to ever do it; gone too soon. RIP Eva ❤️
This cover is an ENTIRELY new listening experience. Eva was magnificent.

Wow, Her guitar gently Speakes her Heart. So Beautiful.
I can never listen to this without getting emotional

Voice of an angel

Eva captures the wistfulness which accompanies adult life in her version.

She just draws your emotions to the surface. Her rendition of Autumn Leaves bring me to tears! Eva was a star to bright to not join the heavens!
It's not just her amazing voice, but she is actually playing that guitar too, LIVE.
Absolutely beautiful, like every song she sang. Her covers of Songbird and Fields of Gold are amazing. Such a tragic loss.
Eva Cassidy and Aurora are the two singers that grab my heart the most! I'm glad you found her.
Thank God my mother taught us to appreciate music when we were Young nothing compares to 60 Motown

She could sing anything: folk, gospel, rock, scat, you name it. But she was unsurpassed at blues. Such a tragic loss of a great voice.
So beautiful RIP God keep you ❤
John Martyn does a cover of this song, different but worth a reaction. In this concert/performance she sing Autumn leaves also beautiful .

Eva's version of Sting's Fields Of Gold is lovely too. And Paul Simon's American Tune. Gone far, far too soon.
You should really listen to FIELDS OF GOLD she is so perfect.
exquisite!!
Beautiful!
Your face reflected all the feelings this song always makes me feel. Thank you for being "tuned in" to the depths of this song and her voice.
I remember requesting you to do this version about 3 years ago and I’m so happy to have found it!!!!

This is the adult version of this song - life lived, longing and regret.
Awesome song and great reaction and thoughts about her and this song. Thanks big guy!
Performed at BLUES ALLEY. YOU ARE SOOO CORRECT. It was so quiet --and this was in a bar!
Tall trees in Georgia live at Blues Alley is unbelievably haunting. Pls do a reaction. Love from Australia. X
