I love the way these master class sessions typically end with the teacher embracing the student like one of their children. It seems like they REALLY care for the performers and for the preservation of the art form.

I sent this to some of my non-singer friends so they could see the excruciatingly detailed work that goes into classical training. I was later informed that they enjoyed the video, laughed hysterically, and now appreciate opera even more.

    Fleming is so charming!

So many young singers push their voices and sing way bigger than they should with their jaws shaking when they sustain a note. Fleming is so good at making them sing less and resonate more.

Shahrdad actually you should sing big when needed, but the best thing to do instead of pushing their voices which makes big singing hard, the better thing to do is release the sound and big singing becomes easier.

WHAT a technician. Wow. It amazes me how Fleming can just get to the heart of an issue.

there is no limit to the amount of character these top-shelf sopranos can add to their phrasing. the devil is really in the details.

She is so smart...pushing is a major issue with singers too...and thus so many careers are cut short. Its hard to get rid of muscle memory.

    What a beautiful voice

Interesting... This is what I'm struggling with too... I'm working too hard with my breath to get my sound out. What's fascinating is that her sound "goes back" when her eyes look down. When she looks up and smiles, her sound changes.

Renee Fleming is my heroine. I'd give anything to work with her!

LOL @ "[vocalizing through a straw is] great for hotel rooms... the neighbors don't complain...." As if they would complain that Renee Fleming is vocalizing in full voice. :)

They would. Believe me. Even a top voice like Renee Fleming's can be unnerving after a hard day's work when all you want is sleep.

Young singers should learn to sing with a quiet and relaxed body before acting every single note they sing, as if it would make us forget their lack of experience and technique. Please, trust the music!
