    Doing the timing chain can be a pain in the ass the first few times you do it, especially on DOHCs, but it's well worth learning how to do. Besides protecting the top end it can often regain some lost performance from the stretched chain allowing the cam timing to be slightly off. Helps starting too..
    Good video

      My person opinion but I myself feel it’s easier working on the Dohc bikes such as these Yamahas definitely more moving parts involved in the system so that would be a down side to it ... but such as the crf250r , 2003 xr650r I always felt it took longer and was more tedious to get timed perfect

    good video changing the chain.
    take lots of time to get the timing spot on. this is not a place to rush. valve timing is very important. as you said, if valve timing off, starting will be hard and the bike will run like crap. go slow and do it correctly.
    cannot wait for your next video professor.

    People who are commenting about buying a 2-stroke instead and ‘this is why you buy a two stroke’ . These people ride 200lb vibrators because they are afraid of valves.

    • @josephbonanza3210
      @josephbonanza3210 6 лет назад +2

      Martin Horvath, I agree, valves are a little extra work but if you know what your doing its not that bad. And 2-strokes (in my opinion) aren't very ideal for trail riding. I mean they have the benifits of a powerband but if your riding wide open flying through the trails you are going to blow your bike, all because they didn't want to deal with valves.

      Ridingbab2 stroke wide open on trails does not even come close to constituting it blowing up..if motor is tight and maintained you can ride for hours wide open without any moyor problems whatsoever...id even say ur more likely to overheat a bike more by going very slow on yrails by not cooling radiator enough thru the no wind and more likely a problem will arise if u ride to slow on trails...

      @@carlmatischok2469, Actually valves are virtually directly contacting cams on overhead cam designed 2 and 4 stroke engines. My biggest concern was the "star bolt" description though. Then again I've worked with several "professional" shop mechanics over the last decade or so, who don't know what a TORX is 🤷🏻‍♂️

    Timing chains last longer than timing belts, a timing belt will usually last about 40,000-100,000 miles before it needs changing on average. A timing chain only needs replacing if there is a problem with it, usually a chain will last the life of the Engine. Dunno what that is in Km's as we use miles in the UK. That's the rule of thumb in cars anyway, don't know lots about bike Engines.

    2017 yz450f. i replaced the piston at 100 hours but didn't replace the timing chain, big mistake. bike was running fine at the track (40 hours after new piston) but when i got home and after washing it off i tried to kick start it - that first kick caused the chain to skip a few cogs and my engine became way off on timing. luckily i didn't do any damage to the engine. I replaced the timing chain and it runs and starts like new - really an easy process to change, probably less than 30 minutes - chain is less than 20 bucks at RockyMountainATV (RMC also has a video showing how it is done.

    Went to the local Powersports shop with a new cam chain in hand for my 07 YZ250F. Guy working the counter told me I was crazy for just asking for a valve adjustment/shim and a chain replacement and tried to tell me I needed to send the head out to get re-done with new valves. Never even looked at my bike! (very low hours). Once I asked for just the cost to replace the cam chain I was quoted at $500 and never even heard how much to shim the valves that needed it before I left after arguing about the price cam chain price. Am I crazy for thinking $500 is too much? This is from a local Honda dealer in MI.

    Bai nene, cum se face ca la masini schimbi lantu de diatributie la peste suta de mii si la motoare (care merg in acelasi regim de turatie) trebuie sa il schimbi dupa fiecare pornire. Zici ca le fac astia din guma de mestecat...

    • @vegasromaniac
      @vegasromaniac  Год назад

      Sunt mai multi factori , 1 este că motoarele de performanta de 250 sau 450 au arcuri mult mai tari , să împingă valva închisă mai repede așa că poți să mergi la turații mai mari 12-14k rpm, asta înseamnă stresa mare pe lanț, apoi lanțul este subțire și mic sa fie ușor, performanta înainte de reliabllity, iar bucățelele din ambreaj care merg prin tot motorul ajunta la uzura lui prematura . Este ușor de schimbat și ieftin, asigurare ieftina pentru motor .. dar merge mult mai mult decât crezi .. iar daca se rupe in mijloc la nicăieri , sau pe o săritură la 10m in aer și se blochează motorul ai pus-o .. deci de aia 🤗 cheap insusance
