Patti and Sarah sing in a similar soprano register. Nona is a lower alto. They're not trying to out-sing each other. Each soloist is expressing herself in her own distinctive voice -- a quality that separates Labelle from other vocal groups.
I saw Labelle do Nightbirds in concert and you are correct. Those three women could sing! Very strong singers each on their own. Sarah Dash just passed. They each held their own with Patti. One of the best live concerts I have ever seen. Sarah RIP

I am so late in the game. I heard this song for the first time in my life the other day and it is now a huge favorite. It has made me a fan of Nona.Sarah could really blow. She’s missed. I love Patti Patti. No one blows like her.
I’m in my way to fullsail university to learn how to produce so I can make music like this I’m 22 now and be bopping only rare live hits like this so I can find the rare songs to sample this is gold fr man
I’m 22 too, and I like to sing/play along and LEARN from this Music that gets deep in my soul I get a different feeling listening to LaBelle thats makes me want to do what they do, no one else does that for me.
Nona's songs always sound like she made them up as she sang them. Like a little girl playing in front of the mirror in her bedroom. Patti brings this song to life. Labelle's power and harmony is like no other.
I don’t know about all that. It sounds like the words of an English major. It’s not simple and very personal for her. It’s not flowery either. The narrator is dealing with some mental health issues, maybe going through some sort of identity crisis, people telling her what is and is not acceptable and that something is “wrong” with her. Knowing what we know about Nona, this is probably a VERY autobiographical piece. And as someone said, she WAS the primary songwriter.
@stevelangely8004 Writing poetry does not make you a great songwriter any more than being a great song writer makes you a great poet. By the way being a poet and being a good poet are also two different things.
@@Ready2ReadU And all of that is subjective, of course. I’ve never gone down the Labelle rabbit hole, but it’s clear that Nona has a lot of ideas about what she saw/reflected on. Perhaps her style may be why Labelle had more of an underground cult following for the first part of their career rather than major “pop” success. For those of us who aren’t members of the “pop” audience, that’s okay. Fortunately, their on-stage abilities were second to none, and they did eventually get the accolades they deserved.

@@GPlatinum08 I don't believe that. There are a few videos where Sarah turned her voice up on that next level and drowned Patti out. I know it sounds impossible but only another Labelle/bluebelle could do it :)

This is what real singing is, real voices not auto tuned and no egos

Sarah’s power here is unreal. All three just ripping it seamlessly. Band is right there with them. Steamroller of a performance.

Interesting analysis, especially since Nona wrote poetry as a teen and thought she would teach English.
