don't need no women , don't need no wine, cause life is sweet when you hit the mainline.. these lyrics and many others left quite an impression on a young man, recently drafted to go to war, in a place where heroin was readily available

I volunteered (1971) and was, besides everything else, surrounded by "Tincture" (in Germany) (tincture of morphine, which is heroin's mom). And I could buy glass works over the counter in German pharmacies.

"if you're married you can divorce your wife, but when you're married to H then you're married for life" - my Dad always said that quote because he loved this song (and he wasn't an addict) and I sadly now know how true that statement is. They were enormously popular, but then they were predominately a Blues band and a Club band at that. They had a lot of well-received albums but they also changed their line-up a lot. About all one could be certain of is that Kim Simmonds would be heading it - the name always stayed with him regardless of the rest of the lineup.

The Ultimate Dope Song, dropped a lot cigarettes, burned my fingers, scratched my nose off, contemplated my shoelaces,
from 71 to 82 listening to this master pc all along the way. Did- 4- 11 month treatments starting in 94 with interferon to the last treatment in 2004 of pegylated interferon + ribavirin, but as the song says, the stuff can kill ya, and treat ya unkind. Went into remission once for 90 days. Now it's 2017 I'm on Harvoni, but just found out that the C also gave me NASH, a fatty liver and Harvoni doesn't kill that monster. So Harvoni will at least kick the C out, but won't get rid of the Nash. It's a preservation type thing.
I know I've had this beast since 72 or 73, that's 45 years, still paying for that ride. I've only lasted this long, because I quit all drinking in 98, had some luck, and I must have Jesus looking after me. You can't be a dope fiend that long without Fuc***g
over a lot of peoples, (sometimes I'm evil so don't get in a huff!) I've tried to make up for all that, I made it this far, seen many
come and go,but this NASH is something else I haven't heard about until My Hepatologist laid it out for me.
You can never tell somebody on it to drop it, it doesn't sink in. But for all use out there that doesn't fool around with it, leave it alone. Theirs nothing worse than moving to another life, and then finding out 10, 20 years later that you can't pass go.

This song can make you laugh, too...back in HS during a talent show, a group of guys got together to perform a "rock" song. The curtains opened and the teachers were already ready to shut them down. They had more speakers than the Who, and when they played, the volume was cranked up. The first time they sang "needle and spoon," the entire school lost it and of course they were shut down. Spring 1971 at Normandy HS. I'll never forget...even if I didn't fully understand at that time! Hey..Im an old timer. Stay away from all of it. You will cut your life short...

This is a very true song written about heroin. One of my best friends died about five years ago while on methadone. He told me he lost all his teeth when they put him on methadone. He went in the USMC in 1973 three months before me. We both ended up with honorable discharges after four years active. He was in the Air Wing and was a technician that worked on guidance systems in missals. After he was discharged he met a girl (both of them were doing heroin) she had three kids from him and then he died. What a tragedy it was.

Came west across the Puget Sound to Seattle from the Peninsula side for the first time back in 86 and my buddies n me were there to party. We got a spot in a local youth hostel and hit the streets lookin for booze, broads n Blues.
First marquis to catch my eye was Demitri's Jazz Alley and for one night only was Mose Allison. I was beatin feet fast for the door but my friends were musically tasteless uncouth knuckle draggin basterds fresh out the loggin camp so they bailed as I settled in for the second set of Mose and his 88 keys of cool jazz class. Ended up havin a couple drinks with the man afterwards and went back to the hostel with an assuredness of a memory made for life. My buddies weren't back when I got there nor were they there when I woke up. Apparently they only found booze n Blues as they were all involved in a bar brawl up the road a spell n spent their weekend and a day in the King County Jail. Still have a chuckle to myself every time I tell this story. Must be I'm a seventh son of a seventh son.

To some I'm a wise man, to some I'm a fool
But I need a little something to keep my cool
I sleep with the sun and I rise with the moon
And I feel alright with my needle and spoon
I feel alright with my needle and spoon
It's difficult sometimes to get my stuff
So if I'm evil don't get in a huff
I sleep with the sun and I rise with the moon
And I feel alright with my needle and spoon
I feel alright with my needle and spoon
Don't need no women don't need no wine
'Cause life is sweet when you hit the main line
I sleep with the sun and I rise with the moon
And I feel alright with my needle and spoon
I feel alright with my needle and spoon
Only one thing that worries my mind
The stuff it kills you and it treats you unkind
If you're married you can divorce your wife
But when you're married to "H? then you're married for life
You're married to "H? and you're married for life

Fortunate to see them a few times in SF in 1969. Undoubtedly one of the best live acts ever & Absolutely the Best at doin “The Boogie”! RIP Kim Simmons’s & Black Top Hats Off to Chris Youlden wherever in the

I think "Blue Matter" was the "high water mark" because of the contrast of 1 side live and without Chris Youlden, and the other Dominated by Youlden and his writing.

Youlden recorded with the Ford Blues Band in 2003. One October Day is on a 1973 album titled Nowhere Road, might indeed be hard to find.

@dangerbooboo, not always, but I rarely not miss the rush and nod of days gone by, its been 22 years since those times, being strung to the hubs wasn't any fun or romantic, but damn! when your high, your superman and your happy you just got feet. Ive never heard a better song that sums up the feeling of being a junkie as "needle and spoon"..............G

No offense to those other fellows who passed through this band, but this line up totally kicks ass and takes names. Just by luck, LPs by this line up were the only ones I purchased. I played the hell out of those records.

Russ Portelli I too am 60 yrs old, and do remember I would hum this tune while I was geezin the un-kind stuff. Let us rejoice in the fact we won that War On Drugs! What a fight it was. Lots of great memories, and many nightmares too.

Great comment. Unfortunately, the N & S and the meth(adone) still haven't acknowledged my divorce papers. Draggin' me (myself) on. Maybe, if I'm one of the lucky, I'll live to join the group and it will be history when I'm sixty.

You have great taste, sir or madam. Are you familiar with the 54-46 that Toots did with Jeff Beck and Pressure Drop with Eric Clapton, also Monkey Man with Gwen Stefani. Might all be on the same album. Very good stuff. And yeah, the Savoy Brown Blue Matter Album may have been the best one. Saw them a couple times here in Detroit and they really boogied.
