As soon as we got back down to street level I had to run a couple of streets away from the crowds to get enough signal to watch - all worth it!

_Rollerdrome_ is one of those HYPER rare (for me) games that got my attention with tight gameplay and stiff challenge but also KEPT that attention, for hours of gameplay, day-in-day-out for about a week or so.
for me that's a miracle. I don't put hundreds of hours into games anymore, I get bored really easy, and I don't care about story. I care about fun, challenging gameplay with depth, feel and ramping challenge. and this one did it.
it's one of my favorites. I really really recommend it. and at that price point, I recommend it to everybody who likes action games. anybody. everybody. it's great.

Launching a steam curator page for GMTK game jam entries would be cool and would love to see how other people fleshed out their jam entries.
You know, every year during Ludum Dare I always feel like the theme is shit before grudgingly starting brainstorming. But the themes for GMTK jams never made me feel like that. I hope GMTK jam continues for many years.

Gamer Toolkit video idea: is slow motion in movement shooters a cliche. Points: complexity - can this genre have easy-to-learn, hard-to-master mechanics; no compromise - can you still build a core player base over set complexity (you could talk about fighting games but of course, it isn't necessarily mainstream); game juice - does slow motion take away form a games flow; and is it wort it.

I've been playing this game for a couple weeks and it's so cool coming to this video after my experiance and having the devs explain that my exact experiance with the game was completley planned and intentional. You do go from just barely scraping by and struggleing to survive to figuring out each weapon and enemy type and slowly feelin more and more in control of each encounter. The challenges make you go back to old levels and you get to experiance how much you've improved. And once you figure out the timing for super reflex it does completly change the feel of the game. And yes my eyes do water every time I play from not being able to blink.
Really really fun game. Every design decision feels inspired. I hope the game gets some sort of expansion or sequal at some point but even if it doesn't I'm completely satisfied with what I got out of it.

I remember seeing one of those gifs in a RelaxAlax video a while ago when he was talking about games taking inspiration from other games or something. Good to see it’s doing well.

Fascinating to see how this game evolved, particularly from a gamejam project.

Couldn’t believe this game didn’t get any recognition at the game awards. Some if my fav sheer gameplay and style of the year. The “flow state” of this game is incredible.

That art direction is top notch. I don't recall any games nailing the 80's eurocomics style anywhere near as well as this does. Environment art could do with a bit more variety IMO.

What did you think of Sable ? Similar visuals, even heavier on the Moebius influence.

@@Lotsofleaves I haven't played it, but it looks a bit too clean compared to the comics (or my memory of them). The lines in Rollerdrome look a bit thicker and noisier, which I feel helps capture the aesthetic better.

The game design sounds really solid. The super reflex mode is brilliant design and is actually found in many action games too, which adds depth in the combat. Monster hunter implements that masterfully too.

It really makes you wonder, how many other jam games are being sat on by their developers because they don't see the potential?

  • @PlayerZeroStart

I think it's really interesting that things that made the game more fun are, at first glance, seemingly things that would make the game way too easy. Making enemies stand completely still is something that, in any other game, would be widely hated. But because of the mixed genres, it's a necessity for the game to be enjoyable. If nothing else, it goes to show that game design can be a tricky thing, and just because something sounds bad at first glance doesn't mean it actually is bad.
