- Transplanting indoor germinated Parsnip seeds. This is the video I should have uploaded 1st time. This is a super simple way to germinate and transplant parsnips. I've used this method several times over the years with good results. It's something you might want to do if you're planning on only planting a few parsnips. Check out this start to finish compilation of videos from a year or two ago. Sometimes Parsnips come out long and straight sometimes they don't. Enjoy the video.

I love root crops, parsnips, celeriac, rutabaga all the wonderful things that hide from us until we harvest.

It is all your fault, Jim! I can't reach my window sill or see outside any more! My sills are filled with trays of seeds in tissue and potted on seedlings, and my tiny yard (I have just patio slabs and gravel) is cluttered with pots and buckets just waiting for them all. Your methods worked so well that I'll have plenty for me, and the local charity shops will get a few pots of spares to sell. I so love the way you work - methodical and respectul of the plants and the soil. Thanks for all the tips and love to the dogs. Cheers!
You've got this germination process down pat. Think I'm going to try a trick a friend
of mine used many years ago, place seeds between two moist sponges on a saucer.
Worked great for him and easy to do. Just keep the sponges moist.
I thought I remembered you riddled and mixed your compost that goes down the
hole. Great harvest Jim. 👍 Plant one, get 2 free! lol

I live in Australia...just north of Sydney. I have been wondering why I have had all these holes in the backyard suddenly appear. NOW I KNOW WHY!!!
That last one was quite a surprise! All the parsnips looked great. My favorite way to eat parsnip is to mash them up with carrots after boiling them together - add a bit of butter, salt and black pepper, so good!
I germinate the same but start mine off in the cardboard that holds toilet roll, same with carrots and its been quite successful.
An excellent video for the spring time! I am starting seeds in pots today.

@HGV Home Grown Veg hi Jim, couple of updates - my little project of the chit with an eye I found in the box of seed potatoes. I have just checked it and roots have reached the bottom of the yoghurt pot. No shoot through the compost yet, there is a proud area in the middle of the compost. It's interesting, just how much do potatoes want to grow?
The other little project of homemade shields from slugs and snails - 🤞 seems to be working great, so far I have found them exploring around but unable to find their way underneath. I mulch my potato pots with straw so built the straw up around the base of the milk containers. I have 8 homemade slug /snail shields now. 😂

Interesting you pick them so young. I wait till the tops die back. I guess part of the frost on them grouping. Perhaps it is as they can stay in the ground all winter anyway. Dig up with a big fork no need of any trowel or soil removal! Certainly early shop parsnip are as good as tasteless.
AH yes you can get then out at the right time. As I learnt from my father. You dig them all up about when the tops have died down, first light frost sort of time. Then dig a shallow trench. Place them tails up in the trench and fill in the trench leaving the end of the tail/root sticking out. Then it is pretty easy to lift one as you need it, all through the winter, snow or frost.
Storing in the ground upside down sounds interesting. Jim.
Hi Jim,great video again,I’ve germinated parsnips seeds with wet paper towel system 3 times and they germinate,transfer to tall plastic cups and every time they have died on me,either to wet,or to dry
Once transplanted a light water spray will keep them going. Try to avoid direct hot sunlight. Jim.

coir is not a good germination medium ok for water retention

My guess would be that shortly they will start to throw up seed heads. From then on in they may start to go 'woody'. Give curry parsnip soup a go Dave, its delish. Jim.
