    THANK YOU!!! Yes, at the top of my lungs, thank you. I am 51 and decided to learn how to play an instrument during covid, bc why not? I tend to pick up on things very easily and speedily, which is both a blessing and a curse, bc I often learn the basics retroactively, out of a failure to figure it out on my own. This qualifies, bc I could not play the notes with barre chords. The notes were playing as thumps, which simply does not work. It took you all of 58 seconds to change my world, in which you pinpointed exactly what my problem was and how to fix it. This level of efficiency in instruction is extremely rare, which makes you a genius in my eyes. Cheers!

    Doing this makes my chords sound sharper because the neck is being pulled back. My action is reasonably low, but unless I pull this hard, everything is a ghost note

    • @MikeMurrayGuitar
      @MikeMurrayGuitar  Год назад +2

      You've identified the problem correctly, you need to apply the force to the strings just to the level you get a pitch. You'll want this to be supplementary to the fingers not a complete replacement. There's some subtlety to it and certain guitar types are more vulnerable to neck bend than others, but experiment with it and over time you'll get it right. Without actually seeing your particular guitar and situation it's hard to give any advice beyond that, but continue to try to find the right balance and you will.

    • @mattmann1623
      @mattmann1623 9 месяцев назад

      I think it should be fine unless you're actually trying to bend the neck out of alignment, basically. The pressure on the neck from the strings alone can be up to like 200lb, so one would assume that you'd have to put in very considerable effort to cause damage.

      Hah, you're in luck this has nothing to do with finger length! Regardless of the length of your fingers you're going to have to experiment with positioning to see what works for your hands (notice that I have to stick almost the whole tip joint of my bar finger over the top to get a good sound). Check out Sheryl Bailey for some top-tier guitar playing with small hands.

    My notes bend up when I use my arm. It's bending the neck a bit I assume. Am I doing it wrong?

    • @MikeMurrayGuitar
      @MikeMurrayGuitar  Год назад +1

      Too much pressure/force, find the balance point! If you have a very sensitive guitar you can try letting the weight of your arm pull itself back by letting it collapse into your side rather than forcefully pull it back.
