The Future of Machines That Move like Animals | Robert Katzschmann | TED

- Imagine a boat that propels by moving its "tail" from side to side, just like a fish. That's the kind of machine that TED Fellow Robert Katzschmann's lab builds: soft-bodied robots that imitate natural movements with artificial, silent muscles. He lays out his vision for machines that take on mesmerizing new forms, made of softer and more lifelike materials -- and capable of discovering unknown parts of the world.

This is where and how great innovation starts. It starts with a kernel. An idea. Imagination.
I love watch Ted talk.. Because it motivates us.. And give knowledge about new things..
Yeah SAME HERE
Soft body robots have been around a while - very cool to see the conductive ink/oil pouches and how fast they move. The fast twitch response from this soft mechanism looks more powerful than others. I wish he focused more on how they achieved the natural motion at 1:53 - all the tests looked epileptic. maybe staggering the sequence of contractions for a whip-like motion? Major change in the system between middle and end. And the more natural footage is time stamped 2018? Confusing
"There are no rotating motors in nature." ATP Synthase?
I liked the talk but since the Sim is powered by electricity, what is the energy source..? If it is a battery how could it be biodegradable? I would think that the ability to construct efficient organic "Batteries" like those found in many eels would be FAR into the future.
The future of robot movements
Can a Veterinarian contribute to this Field?
Nice video
That is very interesting
Very cool
Somewhere out there is a shark destined to choke on Sofie.
A little salt, a wedge of lemon, voila!
It was interesting to make a fish model detector using a motor that made a lot of sound and repeated contraction relaxation with artificial muscles
This is fascinating.
Wow, this is really fascinating!
But what I don‘t get is what the use if it is. Why do those machines work silently?
because clanky motors/pumps are so steampunk, and your grimdark dystopian paranoia is valid but only toward misuses and abuses, as with any tool/tech
reframe your question as "why do animal [or human included] muscles work silently?" -- exposes it as kinda the wrong concern/curiosity -- point is, they *do* work silently (because of how physics and biology and sound all work, duh)
more interesting is -- why would you *want* them to move silently?
plain/general (and altruistic to harmless/neutral) motives would be like the guy said, cuz animal muscles do, and we (and other animals) don't like noise moving internally for no reason (actually is a good sign of a broken bone or other injury/illness going on if the muscle *does* make noise...and otherwise it'd be just annoying, to us, because not normal, to possibly psychologically overloading if constant noise with every motion, twitch, breath, heartbeat audible externally etc.)
nefarious motives would be yes stealth assassination plots by Sophie the Fish 2.0, just like you're implying, dun dun dunnnnnn...
I believe I can flyyyy
Oh boy.....rise of the machines will be a reality....
Jurassic Park is going to be real!! 🦕
That's why 'Nothing is a big deal'
I got an animal motor man…I got an animal motor
👍
could fracking and etc affect the gravitational strength of the planet please or cause more earthquakes or etc
Even this technological innovation shows us there is a God of the universe. If we think that these robots are designed and produced by engineers and scientists who have intelligence, life, will and power , there is a God who created the universe like galaxies , planets, humans , animals ,which we get inspired . We can see him everywhere , if we know how to view.
Hmm
Strong Horizon vibes here.
Leaf blowers...
Cannot wait to see more of these "engines" running around.
One step closer to the Horizon Zero Dawn timeline. Best start to practice your archery gentlemen.
😂
Yes it's loud, but there's no mention if bio mimicry's efficiency compare to rotating motors
i think your missing the entire point of this talk lol
@@laserbeard328 maybe I am, I'm focused in practicality now that global warming is a really global concern
That' Interesting. If this idea comes into reality a lot of muscle related problem will solved
i did think of the medical remedies to/for prosthetics
@@AmazePaulz thats true
Replicants.
Analogs, great. Living tissue? What can go wrong? Let's make robots whose viruses we can catch. ...
Why not use bi-metal.
Growing missing human limbs comes to mind as a good use for this cleverness.
Damn science you scary
After u play Horizon zero dawn and forbidden west
Ppl want indestructible robots not robots that have to heal themselves

'no more loud noise'
next generation.
cute toys and awesome tech in the scientific sphere of aquatic exploration, as well as space applications
next generation...
the robots with human muscles taking jobs....
the next generation..
sentient ai building its own failsafe eternity....
no more generations.
i love the idea, and in the far future i see all the beauty.
I am a Massive! Iain M Banks fan, and the Culture relies on the ergonomic of nature, and the pursuit of complete genetic manipulation.
i think i just dont wanna live through the precarious moment where society could truly implode.
There ought to be stringent social safeguards for tech at this point.
In the past, machines were build from necessity, then later for efficiency.
Now its machines for the shere wonder f what might happen next. For some times, thats fine, but not all times, and the public should get a say
Hooray for classic TED, not terrible social justice nonsense.
Yeah! Screw justice for society! /s

We could use these machines to spy on Russian submarines.

According to the official report, it took about 2 hours and 46 minutes from the time the fire started to the fire brigade extinguishing the fire. Some people posted on the Internet, complaining that the fire exits in the community were blocked by cars. This is because the community has been closed for 109 days, and the electric ignition of the car cannot be turned on, resulting in delays in fighting the fire. Since there is no more news, it is impossible to confirm the rumors on the Internet that the epidemic prevention caused the fire to be untimely. This requires official investigation and identification. But I also want to say that the residents of Urumqi have opinions on the prevention and control policy, which is true. Urumqi is the largest city in the country with the longest continuous blockade period. A large number of residents in this city have been prohibited from leaving the community since mid-August. Many of them stayed at home for a long time, and the blockade was only lifted for a short period of time in the middle Not sure), so some people in the city said they had been blocked for 100 days. Such a long-term blockade is obviously unreasonable, and it exceeds the limit that people can bear physically and mentally. The strength of the actual relationship between them is used to prevent and control the anger.
