- Xbox 360 Emulation on the PC just got a while lot better in April 2021 thanks to recent GPU updates made to the Xenia emulator. In this episode we take a look at these latest updates and how they really improve the emulation experience overall.

CPU : Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-10700
GPU : GTX 1080Ti
RAM : 64.0 GB DDR4
I wonder if a newer GPU would hold some specific benefits- the 1080ti is a great card, but the newer stuff has some very specific render benefits, DX12 and better Vulkan support etc. Both Nvidia and AMD have very different architectures now, and even when some games play as well or better with a 10 series card like the 1080ti, others may play much better with an RTX 30x0 or RX 5000 or 6000 series card.
Maybe even a Zen 2 or 3 CPU, even tho its drastically different than the old Jaguar (or is that only the 8th gen consoles? Lol) cores

Xenia is at a better position than OG Xbox emulation, even if the later has been improving as well.

I remember being blown away by the PS1 emulators years ago when the PS2 emulation was in its infancy. It is great to see the 360 emulation making a lot of progress.
Sony should finally implement PS1 and PS2 emulation on their consoles.
They did until they realized only a very small group of people even cared about it.
The early models of the PS3 is proof.
@@ezg8448 The reason why only a small group cared back then is beacuse the ps2 was still the current console. A great move would be to bring that emulation back now in 2021 that "small group" would be a lot bigger.

They could of easily and more cheaply used software emulation which they did eventually, but instead went with a better and more expensive hardware solution.
All for a just old enough that few would care but not old enough to be consider nostalgic or vintage.
@@ezg8448 It's not like they need to waste much money on that. Playstation Classic even uses PCSX-ReARMed, and they could just take the Beetle PSX HW core for PS4 and PS5. Both of them uses GPLv2.
Same with PS2. They could just take PCSX2, which is also GPLv2 and port that to PS5.
Ensure that source code is given, and everything's going to be fine.
I believe that this is one of the most impressive emulators today. The team is tiny and the emulation is extremely complex and well written. Development may be slow, but it’s most certainly welcome!
I would not say extremely complex, given how well the risc cpu’s specifications are documented, but it does give development a head start on getting all the instructions right.

Xenia is basically the sole reason that the Sonic '06 modding scene has taken off, we rely on it so much at this point, due to the pitfalls of working with real 360 hardware (not many of us even have access to a modded 360 to begin with).
Lol, frickin casuals. Nothing beats running modded 360 games on og hardware. Learn to mod, 360s are cheap ewaste at this point.

I tried to read and understand the Xenia developers' blog post about the changes they made and can only conclude that the knowledge and intelligence needed to pull off such an improvement is pretty much insane. Thanks for the awesome work you guys!
This dude should make a series where he teaches you how to code homebrew for older consoles, would be a cool idea but it might be time consuming

IMO we're not really lacking on this type of content. Of course if he decided to do it it would be cool, especially given his long history with homebrew
@@TheRetroRoom there is Definetly people doing exactly these kind of videos, but you will not find them on RUclips and probably not on switch for free.
There is deep knowledge and skills involved that costs a lot of money for business to get their people trained on.
So even if someone is kind enough to share all that for free, he or she will quickly be silenced about that because it will heavily harm the official trainings about coding and developing tools.
@@overlordalfredo I don't get your last paragraph. Are you referring to using official/illegal development tools? Most homebrew communities are good with making clean-room sdks that are legal.
Honestly many of these games upscaled look on par graphically with modern games, despite being from two generations ago.
Was that Supra at the end supposed to be missing half the steering wheel? hah Great video! When I made an Xbox 360 PC back in 2018 I was surprised how bad 360 emulation was. I then made an OG Xbox PC as a follow up and I was blown away by how that one is even worse. Glad we're getting closer in 2021!

I remember OG Xbox emulation being absolute trash yea. And then I saw a recent video about Jet Set Radio Future... and it was running almost perfectly on CXBX (the OG Xbox emulator) and I HAD TO SEE IT FOR MYSELF. And yes, it DOES WORK and it's absolutely MAGNIFICENT ! And I hope Xenia still does make progress as RPCS3 did since 2017 !!!

@@Allyouknow5820amazingly even with that emulator that game still runs infinitely better on the original Xbox itself. I bought a whole new original Xbox just to play that game because I couldn't get the emulation right on my PC.
Vertex buffer descriptors have a somewhat wrong (though probably valid - but not fully sure) type value stored in them, the correct ones are 2 for texture descriptors and 3 for vertex buffer descriptors, but sometimes, for some reason, 0 is being used for textures and 1 for vertex buffers. There's a workaround config option - gpu_allow_invalid_fetch_constants = true - which makes the missing parts of the cockpit drawn, but it's not enabled by default because often there are completely wrong/uninitialized descriptors in games (either when the shader is using them only conditionally, but not on its current execution path, or because of some other emulation inaccuracy).
Xenia always felt like black magic to me, no required pre-configuration, no options to speak off, it just runs the games. And that's all it matters at the end.

Fable 2 is getting there, the biggest problem it has right now is the floors don't render

Yes please. Lost Oyssey and Blue Dragon. Two of the best JRPG games. Originally only playable on the 360 at the time and now through backwards compatibility on the new xbox consoles. Although Blue Dragon did get a sequal. Blue Dragon: Awakened Shadow. Exclusive to the Nintendo DS.
Lost Odyssey is so good. I can't wait for the day I can replay it on PC. Back in the day I had to borrow a 360 to play it.
yeah, right now it's only playable on Xbox consoles (including Series X and S). I've been almost considering getting a Series S mainly for Lost Odyssey.
I tried Lost Odyssey in Xenia a few months ago and it was rough, though partly playable, with some crashes. It must have already improved a lot with these recent changes.
@@SimonPiano42 Not so sure about that, Crackdown for example hasn't seen much improvement with the recent updates- it looks nice and accurate but too slow to be playable currently.
It's completely mind boggling the emulator developers are focusing on optimization of games like Halo (that were remastered for PC) while overlooking exclusives not available for any other platform. :/

Me at 2021: Playing ps3, gamecube/wii, psp, switch on PC almost perfect in some cases, and Xbox emulators in early stage...

OG xbox emulation was mostly non-existent for the past 20 years and break throughs and the gains were fairly recent

OG Xbox was more popular as a physically modded device with more emphasis on that - It also spawned Xbmc - Kodi.
There weren't that many OG Xbox games that couldn't be played on other platforms so there wasn't that much interest to emulation the console...unlike Nintendo consoles and there exclusives.
The irony is, we can thank Nintendo and their anti-gamer philosophy for spuring gaming Emulation.
I'm glad however Xemu and Cxbx-reloaded are both making progress now and I donate when I can.

This rocks. Honestly? When it comes to emulation, sometimes good enough is good enough to casually enjoy. The difference between "good enough" and "imperceptible compared to the original hardware" even for systems like SNES and the Megadrive was what, like 15+ years? Mad props to the devs for getting so much closer.

With Microsoft focusing a lot on backwards compatibility in recent years that's no longer a problem anymore.

Honestly? I bet the entire team feels that way. They would have 100% compatibility with all Xbox one, 360, OG, and sega Dreamcast games If they were legally allowed to, IMO.

Its important to remember that 100% backwards compatibility just wont happen. Sadly a lot of games have licences that have long expired which forbid the games from ever being sold new again

They already have a working emulator with upscaling and all the fancy stuff, the problem is they need to do everything by the book regarding legality, which leaves out most games.

@@ZX3000GT1 A chinese coder ported Deathsmiles 360 version to PC, only works on NVIDIA cards due to the shader method he used. He stopped working on it as the devs contacted him and said they were working on an official port but it never came.
Being able to get 360 games upscaled to 4K when you have the newer monitors can not be underestimated
Everyone hates getting the thermal paste out of every crevice on the GPU, gotta love that at 2:45!
I would use a pressure hose and then let the chip dry if it had that many nooks in it.
I still remember seeing a debug build of NFSMW05 running Xenia back in 2017, thinking that X360 emulation was a hopeless dumpster fire. Oh man, how wrong I was.
sadly the retail version of most wanted 2005 still crashes with the latest version of xenia
@@alexalcalaortiz368 Well, you can mod the PC version to look very close to the X360, so that's not that big of a problem to me. The real problem is when a X360 exclusive doesn't work on the emulator.
Man, it never ceases to amaze me how if I get into a strange rabbit-hole of gaming, within a week or two there is Always a new MVG video dedicated to the weird thing I am into at that moment! I recently came across a massive stack of 360 games and got nostalgic af, but I don’t have a Microsoft console beyond the og atm...so I got curious about emulation, and here we are again lol:) Thanks for the great content as always, and keep up the great work!

Im always stunned by how good old games look when played at higher resolution, it may not be the "pure" way to play them but to me they just look good.
Yep there are a few that do not look as good but on the hole most look amazing at 1080P or higher.
Yes, when it comes to 3D games they surely do. In my experience most of the complaints come from sprite-based 2D games

Super Nintendo Games look glorious when scaled correctly from 240p to 960p
Keep in mind that Forza Horizon 2 on the 360 was a very cut version of the proper Xbox One release.
The textures and lighting were not particularly great on the 360 version to begin with.
too bad digital foundry doesn't do emulation, I'd love to see comparisons between PS3 and 360 emulation, as some sort of perverted zombified reprise of the console wars
I watched that kind of videos, rcps3 way way ahead xenia. If ps3 had 24 fps on rdr, xenia had barely 10
Digital Foundry is fine and all but they wouldn't piss on emulation if it were on fire.

I've been playing Ace Combat 6 and other than audio glitches during cut scenes, it is now fully playable with Xenia. Great work by the developer.

MVG's final comments in this video about there being no commercial emulator for PC by Microsoft really makes you wonder what the scene would be like if they did step forward and make one.
It's sad that Sony refuses to have any sort of BC for PS3. So many HD collections or great PS3 games that died with the console. Even games like Fallout 3, which is a pain to get to run on a modern PC at least has a stable version on Xbox. I'm happy that emulation is getting way better for the 360 emulator. Some games are available on PC but they are unstable to play on a modern PC. It will be interesting to see where this goes.
Blame the cell processor. Its literally 7 small ass cpus all shoved into one body. Hypervisoring itself and master slave controlling itself.
Its a complicated mess that on paper was actually more powerful than high end gaming p.c's..
Issue being that most devs didnt have a single clue how to program for it properly. Sony themselfs didnt even fully conprehend its power or how it ticks fully
I have a fat PS3 that natively plays PS1 and PS2 discs.
@@DerekMoore82 They meant there isn't backwards compatibility FOR the PS3, not that the PS3 isn't backwards compatible with PS2/1 games. As in, the PS4/5 won't play PS3 games.
@@DerekMoore82 you can also softmod the ps3 slim and super slims to run ps2 via software emulation like the 2nd version of the ps3 used to before patch.

When Goldeneye 360 was leaked I couldn't believe how well this emulator performed, my pc is not that great , that's amazing work these people are doing .

One thing I always found utterly bizarre about the 360 library is the japanese exclusive port of the Clannad Visual Novel. A vintage dating game isn't exactly what comes to mind when you think "XBox" and yet it exists.
I'd like to see someone port the English translation to the 360 version of the game, but it feels like it'd be a whole lot of work for something not a whole lot of people would benefit from.

As a Proud owner of both OG Xbox and Xbox 360, both modded, I am pleased with the improvement of emulation for both systems; even as I can just fire-up my consoles and play any game I wish, I still make my own builds of Xenia and XEMU/XQEMU/Cxbx-Reloaded regularly and check out the latest features and compatibility.... I love MS Consoles and I also love PC Gaming, so emulating MS consoles in my main rig is like a match made in heaven for me.

You should definitely cover Xemu emulator for the OG Xbox! Recent releases offer excellent compatibility and for the first time ever many Xbox games are playable on PC. It also allows for connectivity via System Link with other instances of Xemu and even real consoles. A video about this could greatly supplement your video where you've connected three generations of Xbox consoles.
Next step is to emulate original xbox backwards compatibility on xenia
Would they do that though? OG Xbox compatibility on actual 360 hardware was quite lackluster and there is a standalone OG Xbox emulator (CXBX) as it is.
You know what would be interesting, 7.1 LPCM on emulation. OG Xbox and Xbox 360 only have builtin Dolby Digital 640kbps 5.1 with DTS-ES 6.1 left to an AV-receiver to decode it, WMA Pro 7.1 768kbps if you have a VSX series receiver. I would've love to encode my movies in VC-1+WMA Pro audio since it's the 360's most promoted codec. But I'm not an audiophile and I'm not prioritizing 7.1 audio either, so I'm not getting the VSX-90TXV just to decode what's essentially DTS-ES on steroids. AVI Xvid+AC3 5.1 640kbps is good.
Unrelated, but i was wondering if the resizable BAR support on the latest GPU's and CPU's would make N64 frame buffer emulation better?
Great video. Might be worth removing the background blur effect, though, as it makes the mic look like it's floating in the middle of nowhere (boom arm is blurred but mic isn't).

Ya know people... An X360 or a PS3 is so cheap by now. The games aren't even that expensive either. Just get it there instead of waiting for 20 years that emulation gets to an acceptable point... I'll never understand people.

I am glad Xenia is able to play the unreleased GoldenEye that has updated models, textures, and smooth 60 fps gameplay.
Sadly, Xenia doesn't work properly on Ryzen 5000 cpu's

what you mean by "very slow"...20-25 fps in rdr? same result was on intel before too...try off smt , even on some PC games helps)
Even the explanations about how this works makes it obvious how much work went into official emulation from Microsoft themselves. As hardware reached as certain level it became so much harder to emulate. This may now be a thing of the past though with how new console generation seem to be aiming to maintain full compatibility with the previous generation.
I also don't think people realise how much the custom code in the 360 made it more than just a PC in a console. People always compared that consoles generation specs to the equivalent cpu and gpu but you could never replicate the same game quality with those equivalent parts.
Forza Horizon 1 still doesn't render ground textures :(

It's about time this emulator got some love! Everyone's been hyping RPCS3 since 2017 (thanks to Persona 5 lol) while Xenia never got the coverage it deserved.

Titanfall is an interesting one. Not suprised it crashed. That 360 port was pushing the console to its limits along with the HD textures that used to take minutes on end to load.
I'm just waiting for Banjo Kazooie nuts and bolts.
Only thing left is the correct emulation of the xbox 360 voice chat.
I wonder why we can't play all games from xbox 360 on Xbox series X/S. Microsoft why?
The reason is because some of the games didn't work on the emulator or the games had worse fps than on a actual xbox 360 and the license stuff to have the games on microsoft store
Licensing issues
This makes me wonder if the emu devs shared their knowledge with MS if MS could implement 4K upscaling and such to all 360 games on Xbox. I feel like they've done a lot of the footwork required to obtain the knowledge to achieve that. At least some games have enhancements but an overall enhancement for all titles would definitely be the dream.

This is awesome news! For me gaming's future is emulation. There are so many titles I never got to try on multiple platforms. Even just testing them at this point is better than most of the new crap released today.
Fantastic stuff. As someone that needs to have the best version of a game I can sleep easier knowing I don't have to settle for PS3 versions of games of that era. Now the task of watching a bunch of old Digital Foundry comparison videos to see what games I need to get. lol.

Red dead performs so much better now its amazing, used to dip to 15fps on areas with a lot of NPCs and now its between the high 20s/low 30s

It's good to see that generation improving since the last time I checked it wasnt looking so hot especially the PS3's emulation scene.
You should revisit ps3 emulation. Xenia is making improvements, but it is still nowhere near rpcs3 in performance and features.
If dead or alive 4 is playable. Then I will consider downloading this.

This year has been the best year ever for emulation. Nintendo Switch and Wii emulation is now better than the consoles themselves. PS3 emulation is amazing and now Xbox 360 emulation.

I5 4590, 8GB Ram ddr3, geforce 1050 ti... hace un año habia probado Xenia con algunos juegos y no me gustaba como funcionaba, muchas caidas de los fps en carga de shaders (que se solucionaban la segunda vez que pasabas por esa zona en el juego pero, no tenia mucho sentido jugar asi)... Esta semana se me ocurrio volver a probar las nuevas actualizaciones y doy fe que el emulador mejoro muchisimo!! Juegos como los dragon ball, diablo, vampires rain, condemned 2 y algunos de carrera/lucha que probe, se emulan muy bien y muy fluidos!!! sin problemas de bajones... Otros mas pesados como silent hill downpour o splatterhouse, mejoraron muchisimo, tienen sus microbajones en carga de shaders pero ahora son menos notorios, haciendolos mas que jugables y disfrutables. Sin duda Xenia avanza a pasos agigantados!
I have a request, if you would have the time to do something like this.
You talk a lot about emulation, but would you have the time or the knowledge to make a video series of developing an emulator for a system that hasn't been properly emulated yet (I would suggest the PS Vita for that)?
It would be beneficial to those studying computer languages and coding.

Oh the Xbox 360 brings me back to the good times. I love the Series X, but the 360 was something special. Halo 3 alone made that generation the GOAT.

Microsoft could contact these guys and use their expertise on their emulation/backward compatibility solution.
Downloaded Xenia last week because I needed to get Sonic 06 gameplay recordings, been having fun playing RDR with it too. My PC is i5-9400f, RTX 2060, and 16gb RAM
Fingers crossed that mouse and keyboard becomes an option in the future for FPS games. Getting to play my old FPS games with a mouse and keyboard would be one of the main reasons to use emulation.
