Clara Schumann: 3 Romances, Op. 11 No. 1

  • When I first played through this first of the Op. 11 Romances by Clara Schumann, I was sure they were a nod to the Intermezzi of Brahms.
    But it's impossible. She composed Op. 11 in 1838-39. At that point, all Brahms had written (that we know of) for solo piano were concerto cadenzas, exercises, a canon on a theme of Robert Schumann, and some short pieces based on opera themes. It would be another 15 years before C. Schumann & Brahms would even meet, and 40 years before he'd write Op. 76, his first significant collection of short forms for piano including intermezzi.
