This isn’t a problem with RUclips polls. This is a problem with human nature. Laying in your PJs in bed and clicking “yes I’ll definitely be there” is a very different thing than actually getting up getting up, getting dressed, and showing up.
Yeah, but why do it? I can understand trolls bashing their keyboards writing nonsense, knowing they’re immune from comebacks, but why say you’re gonna do something if you have no intention of doing it? That’s just weird.
Saying you did it when you obviously didn’t is even worse! I guess people just like clicking things for no reason. This does not bode well for humans…
@@simontillson482 Facebook events have similar issues with regard to "interested" vs. "going". It ends up being a crapshoot. No excuses for people's reponses to the second poll

Poll is good for irresponsible data collection, NOT FOR INVITATIONS.
It's not just RUclips, I help out with the observatory public nights at work and the last few years we switched to requiring reservations, so many people sign up and respond to emails saying they will be there, and then don't show up.
I do hope you have another. I couldn't make it though I wasn't sure where to look for more information about what was planned out of curiosity. Now I know to keep an eye on your RUclips Community page
I think Fran's idea was it should be a surprise, so other than location, there wasn't anything else.

As a musician I am unfortunately totally used to this relative level of enthusiasm and turnout.
Generally speaking, people suck.
Could it be that most/all of those who said "yes" in the poll weren't Patreon supporters so couldn't read the details of where to go? Could it also be that those who said "yes" in the poll never saw the subsiquent post in your community tab because YT didn't show it to them and such posts never show up in your subscriber feed?

I think it is less to do with RUclips Polls. I have always had way less attendance than Facebook and RUclips events and post. So not sure if the data or questions are accurate.
Seems to me about 85% of pollees were completely honest. The idea that of all the locations that your viewers are likely to be (in a world audience) 15% are close enough to consider a day trip is ridiculously improbable. Knowing this, you can use this information to refine your poll result numbers in the future.

I participated in the poll and voted that I WOULD attend FranLab Fun Day! I was ultimately unable to attend because I am a bot. I apologize and hope you understand.

What do you expect Fran? People pay for appointments across a variety of industries - with actual money - and forfeit the cash by not turning up on the day or being home. People say they will do lots of things because it's easy to do, even if they put their money where their mouth is - nothing matters until they really rock up.

Maybe the 5% on the first poll were really saying "Yes, Absolutely! I will be there... in spirit!"
My workspace is just as messy - I’m suspicious of people with super clean workspaces!

This happens in real life too. Once I told some fiends “what about going dancing this weekend?” I got 100% enthusiastic adesion but nobody showed up that evening 😅
So, I didn't vote in any poll (like probably a lot of viewers, I don't watch every video, but I check in sometimes to see how you're doing, because I'm a big fan of your designs and you're a personal inspiration to me), but I would have had to pick "Nope, too far away". I really wish that weren't the case. Casually hanging with you in such a setting would be amazing. But another continent is indeed too far though.
I'm stunned just one person turned up, I'm glad you had a great time with them though. I bet they felt lucky!
... Y'know that gets me thinking though, there are probably a lot of viewers like me who only click occasionally, and that's terrible for metrics etc, but it's not that we don't care about you. We do. So please don't let any of this get you down, yeah? I'm sorry the internet sucks.
Philly is a bit of a hike from Portland, Oregon. Plus, a friend of mine advised me that it's usually a bad idea to meet your heroes. Perhaps that's not so true in the 21st century.

I would have been there if it where reachable for me.
So I did my own Philly weekend and watched several videos about Philly and got to know some interesting parts of the City. I had also fun, watching those buildings in Central City, imagening you, living in one if these. 😊
Wow. It sounded like fun, but Philly is a LONG way from Oklahoma, so I did not do the poll.😁

I am 11 hrs away in the UK with a minimum £1000 for the flight.
Same, the thought crossed my mind to go since PA is a bordering state but then Fran did the video insisting not to come from that far away.

If it helps at all in your data points, I voted in both polls -- saying I couldn't attend because I was too far, BUT I never even saw the community post that the Fun Day was even happening. It's very rare that RUclips will show me community posts, and if it does, it's usually only a couple at a time (which is the same case with polls, actually). Unfortunately, I don't see Community Posts to be as effective as actual videos to get the word out about things.
Fran, things happen like this but all the love to you! Online polls from my statistics classes, I learned, are generally a hilarious thing. We made an example where the options were semi-political things and some others like, “I eat babies,” and “Death to bunnies!,” with good numbers on those answers lol. You could put any number of options of any kind, outrageous as you could think, and people would vote on it with no serious confidence.
Yeah, I remember my statistics professor covering why that sort of polling is a waste of time. It actually takes a lot of work to get even somewhat accurate results and that was in the days before people were intentionally trying to make the wrong.
I personally answered the poll, but I also clicked the button for too far away, as it would be a very long drive for me. I also suspected that the polls weren't very accurate. This just confirms it.
You got to try reverse psychology
Tell people you're having a fun day and also tell them they're not invited
I'm in Cali so unfortunately I couldn't make it and I gave the same answer in the poll. But if we're in Philly I would have been there Fran.

Not shocked senseless that not only is there no "social" in "social media but no truth in the internet.
Yeah, you gotta lock those people in, make them commit to it personally. It's gotta be a ticketed event that requires them to cough up their hard-earned to go, which makes it harder to justify pulling out. Either that or just stick to the live streams, maybe have an extra-special stream once in a while where you do something different and special.
Actually, one thing I thought might be fun was a comment I saw on a recent Big Clive video, where the poster suggested someone should make a Big Clive Bingo game. It would generates a bingo card from his common catchphrases or themes (think: involves LEDs/garden lights, poor mains separation in teardowns, etc.), and you play in the normal bingo fashion, marking them off till you get a row, column, or diagonal. My suggestion was the centre square would be "One Moment Please", basically the freebie.
Anysways, I bet Clive would give you permission to play it with your viewers on random videos of his during a live stream, kind-of like what JJJacksfilms used to do with Sssniperwolf. I believe JJJacksfilms used a site called Bingo Baker, which seems pretty reasonable for the membership price. The only catch might be RUclips not liking you watching another YT video on stream, that could get you in trouble. Obviously it's not a problem on Twitch, but that's not your platform so I can understand you not wanting to change your live stream system just for that. On the other hand, doing something different on twitch might get your more YT viewers, which is why a lot of RUclipsrs do gaming live streams on Twitch.

Facebook events have similar issues with regard to "interested" vs. "going". People forget, the weather might be crappy, etc. This doesn't explain the after poll though...
One viewer honestly sounds like a better time for everyone than 40 people showing up.

Do you have any idea how many went to your Patreon page for the details? That's sorta what I do. I make an extra hoop or two to jump through to see how many might REALLY be interested in my small events. It still doesn't match the lookie-loos but helps in my planning :-)

Yeah, pretty standard for those sorts of things. Chances are you'll have more people turn up to subsequent things but I wouldn't be worried about huge numbers of people turning up.
Fran, I didn't vote and obviously didn't attend, but if I lived about 2,500 miles closer I would have at least considered it. No, really! Great video!

I think polls are just another way of RUclips finding a way to gauge engagement with a video or creator. It's sad.
People online lie....well there's a bit of news. Sorry people didn't turn up for you though. I have arranged a motorcycle meet and 2 people turned up....I learned my lesson.

Very cool building. Polls are horrendously wrong almost always. A lot say ya, I'll be there but are no shows. I hope that you're not upset. Very hard to get folks together (Peacefully)for any type of thing even family reunions. Todays people do what they want when they want & don't want to be hassled about it. In other words, (don't inconvenience me). It's not like it used to be. But you found out what you were looking for/the answer/ in your Fun Day Experiment. I treat all my events as experiments. You have to to avoid disappointment.
I think folks mean well but gas/parking or train/cab fare, food and other costs may be an issue and they should be honest upfront if they can’t come.
Yeah the polls are a vibe thing, like my ideal self.

People polls prove what they want to be, not what they actually are. It is the same difference between 'do-gooders' and 'people that do good'. The latter is rare.

This isn't a RUclips problem. You would have got the same result from any anonymous online poll.

You can place a lot of the blame for the low turnout on RUclips, since they do such a poor job of notifying subscribers about community posts. I saw your initial poll, but I never saw your post that the meetup was actually going to happen, nor the follow-up poll.

I think there's a large element of people being nice and telling you what you want to hear. Could also be some that genuinely wanted to go, but didn't see the details announcement.

In the spirit of what you were trying to do I believe you could have drawn a crowd, but if there's any obstacle in the way, even just a registration or login it can be a turn off for so many. Rethink, regroup and try it again and best of luck with the wonderful initiative

Perhaps polls are no longer as meaningful as they were? Think about the last US elections, or take the parliamentary election in France! In terms of turnout: Make them pay 80 bucks, and give those who come, 40 back, and those who come punctual 60😉

it's not about youtube polls, this just happens to be your audience. there is also the issue of understanding humans. how many democrats keep saying they're moving to another country if a republican wins, but none of them ever move. likewise there are plenty of people who like saying they are going to do a thing more than doing a thing, especially nowadays (more so than the 80s).. Tom woods viewers, for example, seem much more likely to show up to tom woods events, but this is likely about the type of audience more than anything else. not all groups of people are the same. ;-)
Eh, I live 8 hours away. If it makes you feel better I stand up my own friends because of other spur of the moment things. Over-worked and when I'm set free I forget everything I planned for the weekend and sleep😂
