-Hello everyone and welcome to my channel! This channel is about my life as a farmer, and I hope you take the time to watch all my videos! I am a third generation dairy /crop farmer who loves what I do and want to share it with you! We farm in Michigan where we grow hay, corn, soybeans, and wheat, while milking almost 200 cows twice a day. So enjoy the videos and feel free to like, comment, and share my videos!

Believe you will like land rolling. Two other farm channels I watch both land roll and they feel it really helps. I think you will like like using the land roller. The other you tube farmers use the same land roller. Very nice machines. Good company that builds them. Thanks for doing the drone.

One of our neighbors rolls his new seeding after he harvests a crop. He swears by it so it must be a good idea. At least he seems to think so.
You can tell from your aerial shot that the roller works.

Usually make the windrows just about as wide as the chopper header KIPP so it will dry,then narrow it up later in the cutting day so sum of it doesn’t dry to fast. 🤫🤫. Thanks so much young man !!
We got a 45 foot roller for this season. We rolled our existing hay stands and most of our beans.

Absolutely a great video. I like the land rolling. It does look different from above the best of all you got Grant with you learning the trade absolutely great.
In our area of Ontario close to 100% of beans and new seeding gets rolled. It's a no brainer. We also roll our corn fields before planting to give a firmer seedbed
My son loved riding in a tractor when he was young. Neighbors would stop by our house and pick him up to just ride with them for the day. He thought he wanted to be a farmer but ended up being a U.S. Army Ranger and served 23years. Love little Grant.
We roll all of our new seeding and beans after we plant them helps a lot.

here in minnesota almost everyone rolls bean fields after planting makes for nice combining

Kip, when you find a gopher hole, take yer pickup and a 6:57 piece of good sized diameter hose, stuff it in the hole, connected to your exhaust 'n you'll bring it out in short order. Then it's your choice on how to dispatch the varmit.
That was my final resolution after several years and all else failed in my yardof little dirt piles.

I've heard about people doing that. They say light tractor with heavy roller. Have a great time my friend. Big breakfast. Huge lunch no dinner when it's hot for me
Rolling a rough field wont do much to smooth it out. Its more to push down rocks or small obstructions that you might hit with the disk mower
Kip, talk to your seed salesmen about rolling alfalfa, needs to be done before regrowth, as i have heard around here
There are studies on how every trafic pass affects yeild on alfalfa. It actually is quite significant in reducing yeild. With that being said, land rollers are an awesome tool when seeding hay or beans. Definitely recommend using it at planting time.

I’m wondering about compaction and will the water drain off or will it soak in the ground ? I would like to see a side by side comparison.
Would love to roll a hay field I have but it's just 11 acres so can't justify a roller and no one around me has one. Wish the US ag department had one to rent like they do no till drills

Didn’t see you put a pin in the Hitch pin.
Rollers like the bounce, the hitch will pop the pin out. Didn’t see you put the stops the hydraulics cylinders. Rollers are heavy bouncing will bend the cylinders going down the road.

What does that rolller weight
just shy of 20,000 LBS (approx 580 LBS / foot on that model).
On conventional till beans, studies use to say 2-5 increase on the yield. Minimum till, you will notice a little yield bump.
As for rocks, the ones the size of a basketball, those will push down some but should be picked for best results. The baseball/softball size usually push in fairly decent.
On some fields, depending on the length of the drums, you might notice the plow lines. Like where a person struck out or where the dead furrow was.
As for the pocket gopher mounds, on a 4 year old field, if rolling before 1st cutting, you might need to hit the field lightly with the field cultivator to loosen up the old mounds from the previous year to fully flatten the mounds made before the ground froze.
As for operating speed, basically as fast as your back or passenger can handle it. But slow enough that you can still get work done the next day. It will vary depending on the tractor, like if im using a 7810 with a loader on it or the 9430 with the big metric tires.
For the older guys that haven't used a roller, its similar to opening up and old melroe drag, but dont have to get out of the cab. But it will vary some depending on the brand of roller
They make 80 ft wide . That one is to narrow
