Can separatists in West Africa strongarm their way to independence? | DW News

- Nnamdi Kanu is the leader of a separatist group calling for an independent State of Biafra. His followers call themselves the 'Indigenous People of Biafra' and they've not given up their dream of their own homeland in southeastern Nigeria. The region has seen a surge in attacks, with some 130 police officers killed this year alone. In May, Nigeria's security forces launched an operation to quell the violence which many fear may lead to a new war.
But the conflict between Biafran separatists and the Nigerian government is much older than this recent outbreak.
Meanwhile, reports from Cameroon indicate English speaking separatist militias have joined forces with their Nigerian counterparts. A development that has led to fears of an acceleration in violence. The Biafran secessionists and the Ambazonian Defence Force in southwestern Cameroon share a common border, and a joint purpose: to establish their own states. They say they are already sharing weapons.
One way to defuse the crisis in Nigeria would be good governance. Yet for some in the region it was actually the election of President Muhammadu Buhari, himself a veteran of the Biafran war, that reawakened calls for independence. Now the arrest of Nnamdi Kanu has only heightened tensions.

I can hear clearly your reporter from Abuja said Nnamdi kanu is a (Notorious Separatist.)... Is that how he learn to make his own analysis on issue concerning right of freedom and human rights..... I think time has come when Africans will drop foreign language and use their own to avoid careless grammatic errors in the public domain....
Valid point. However, that introduces new problems. In Nigeria‘s case for example, which of the over 200 languages should the country use. Picking any one of them will be very divisive.
In this particular case, when contacting an English language press they'd still use English regardless of the loca language
@@akintoye-ilori we ought to use them all. It will make us stronger. We igbosspeak Yoruba and many more languages like I in Poland. I already speak 10 languages. We need not choose one language for Nigeria. Everyone should feel included

The case of Cameroon 🇨🇲 has been sympathetic that French dominated government ignored Southern Cameroon for over 50yrs. France 🇫🇷 is the mastermind behind the scene as far as the Cameroon war is concerned
Ambazonia is sure no shaking
Africa's problem began with the Berlin conference.
Yougoslavia disintegrated, and Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia etc were born, and now they are doing very well. Igbos, Yorubas, Fulani, Kanuri, Kongo, Zulus, Darfuri, Ashanti, Luba and many more all had their own Kingdoms before colonization.
Well, there are far too many failed states in Africa, with South Sudan being the latest in a tsunami of tragedy. I don't think Africa needs more countries and I doubt these ethnic states will be any more successful or viable than previous newly-created states. Anyway, the world is moving into regional states: the EU, ECOWAS in West Africa so forth. That's the future: regional and then eventually continental unified states. Only a united Africa can solve Africa's myriad problems. Furthermore, it's fallacious to purport that since Yugoslavia disintegrated, the states that have emerged are doing well. You are overlooking the unresolved ethnic tensions and wars that have been fought by the newly emerged states.

@@obiohagwu788 Are you being obtuse? Since South Sudan gained its independence in 2011, it has suffered from a civil war, ethnic violence, famine, and political instability. Hardly the epitome of a successful state. It's pretty much the antithesis of a successful state; it's closer to a failed state. Many observers predicted this would happen after South Sudan gained its independence. Watch some news...

@@juninhofreekick4912 well it was an igbo politician called Nnamdi Azikiwe that made it impossible for a secession clause to be inserted in the Constitution at independence; it was also an igbo general Aguiyi Ironsi that destroyed the civilian Constitution, replaced it with a military decree and handed the lopsided federation to the Fulani, giving them the blueprint with which Nigeria is now being mismanaged. A really fascinating look at the movements in Biafra and Ambazonia. The efforts to forge ties between them has been so interesting to watch. In both cases, the growth of separatist sentiment was avoidable. Cameroon completely marginalised the Anglophone areas. And Nigeria never really and truly forgave the Igbo foe the Biafran War and again marginalised them. (Look how few gave held senior positions, despite being one of the three main groups in the country.)
@James Ker-Lindsay
Thanks for your in-depth understanding of what is going on in Nigeria. It shall be well with you.
The same marginalization that caused the Biafra war is still going on with impunity.
After the civil war, there was 3R’s recommended after the civil war in the south east which is reconstruction, rehabilitations and reconciliation till date no government both past and present has made any effort to address the root cause of the war. Or to implement the 3R’s recommended.
But the most unfortunate thing is that United Nations especially the so called world powers kept blind eyes over 3 million people that were massacred during the Biafra civil war.
So no going back Biafra will surely come to pass no matter how long it takes to achieve it.
You see how Hausa security analyst was describing the marginalization against the Igbos as if he is a stranger in Nigeria.

Nnamdi kanu did not jump bail.
Correction: Nnamdi Kanu never "jumped bail". Few days before he was to appear in court, some overzealous soldiers went on a reckless, lawless shooting spree in his home community, just like they did recently at Chief Sunday Adeyemo's house in Ibadan, and also when youths from all over the country attempted to organize a protest in Lagos in October of 2020. They killed scores of people and heaped up their dead bodies in bushes and rivers. Everyone saw it, but looked the other way, because it did not yet affect them at the time. Of course, the authorities dubbed these killers "unknown soldiers" even with clear video evidences making the rounds. If they had killed him on that day, he would have died like a chicken, because the same lies would have made the rounds. If you were the one in that kind of lawless circumstance, be honest, on what basis would you still believe you were safe? So, he managed to escape to save his life first. Still, the lawlessness in the southeast region by law enforcement agents did not abate. Please, get your facts straight. As you can see, even in the latest drama, the day Nnamdi Kanu was supposed to be arraigned in court, for no apparent reason, the law enforcement agents took a unilateral decision not to produce him in court. The judge simply bowed low and accepted their decision without any questions or sanctions. These are some of the facts of the matter. But, of course, political correctness keeps everyone from saying it blatantly the way it is.

The problem is in the foundation of the country...lopsided!!!
Restructure or Break it up!! No one group should have more voting power over others!!!
Your biased report show DW Africa is working with nigeria against Biafra freedom
The Biafrans don't want war, they are simply saying 'lets settle this once and for all in a referendum' lets choose Biafra or Nigeria through a referendum nationhood/countryhood can NEVER be forced on a person.
There is no good governance that can solve the zoo problem the only way is an independent Biafra. Your guest is obviously a Hausa/Fulani person and so long as he tries not to be economical with the truth he obviously shied away from the direct question you ask as to what is the way forward to solve the zoo problem. He said good governance, but we don't care about any form of good governance in Nigeria. All we need is Biafra and nothing can be substituted implace of Biafra. We are not Nigerians and there will never be peace in that contraption until Biafra is free.
Buhari wasn't a general during the Biafran war
he fought in it tho
@@theelectricprince8231
He did, but not as a General. Murtala Mohammed was not even a General during the war. Not even Obasanjo.
I think the reporter simply said "general"for convenience sake. This network is not balanced in their presentation. Even Aljazeera ✔ has done a lot better reporting on this topic.
NO AND WITH RESPECT YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY WRONG . BIAFRA SEPARATISTS ( 5 IGBO STATES ) HAS NO COMMON BOARDER WITH THE SEPARATISTS ABAZONIANS OF CAMEROON. The following Nigerian states, CROSS RIVER STATE, BENUE STATE, TARABA STATE AND ADAMANWA STATE, are the only Nigerian States that HAS A COMMON BOARDER WITH THE ABAZONIAN SEPARATISTS OF CAMEROON.
And NONE OF THOSE 4 states will ever join the 5 South Eastern Nigerian SEPARATISTS
STATES TO CREATE BIAFRA.
YES NONE.
So it is therefore totally wrong and stupidity of the highest calibre for the producers of this video to say that the 5 IGBO SEPARATISTS STATES ( BIAFRA ) IN NIGERIA HAS A COMMON BOARDER WITH THE AMAZONIAN SEPARATISTS OF
CAMEROON.
Southern and middle belt should split from the north.
By geographical calculations the idoma people are practically living on Igbo soil so I think it’s only right the whole of the middle belt joins. That’s why it’s called Bi-Afra...
After 52 years of BIAFRA and Nigeria war,,we the Igbo lost about 3.5 000 000 people both the innocent children who died in the result of starvation?,,yet the Nigerian government don't want biafrans to be free,,I think we should go for second war, with this new generation of our BIAFRA youths,,, because war is the only language that Nigerians understand
May God Yahweh bless his people in southern cameroon and biafra in yahshua mighty name. The true ancient biblical hebrews. Biafra and Southern Cameroon will be free. yahweh is our strength.
Very poor documentation it is not professional at all dw u allowed d northern Nigeria a fulani man to tell the story of biafrans and when the biafrans finally get the mic u don't allow them to tell their story come on!!! it's not right. I thought this was a documentation but I see people here passing judgement how can that fulani guest say that Nnamdi kanu jumped bail is he a judge? Or is there any Nigerian court that has passed a judgement to that regard the answer is no Nnamdi kanu ran away for threat to his life from Nigeria which is his constitutional human rights, the day his home was attacked by the army, an attack that he lost his relatives and his demostic animal's allow the BIAFRANS to tell their stories allow them to tell their stories
Colonial contraption s should have no place in modern Africa ,Africans must be original in their thinking and thoughts.
