I miss it terribly! Went to Dalian from Canada to work at the Yumi Katsura Wedding Photo Studio when it was still located in the Bohai Pearl hotel (you walked beside it on your right when you were in front of the train station) in 2003. I was there when they were finishing the construction of that train station. I spent six months in Dalian and loved every minute. I lived in the hotel and went from my room on the 22nd floor to work on the 5th floor every morning for 0900. Wonderful. Wonderful hotel, oak trims and wardrobe and the mirror was heated from behind so it didn't steam up (when there was hot water) - SARS came that year and messed everything up dreadfully but we survived, though the boss took a shellacking on my pay as the high-paying customers that were going to hire the Special 'French' Foreign Photographer mostly didn't show. My days off were wonderful, spent with my interpreter exploring the scene - especially Xinghai Square. Classical music blasting from giant speakers throughout the square as we rode around on a side-by-side bicycle-built-for-two. I'll never forget you Wei Wei ❤❤❤ and my good friend Xiao Ming! I hope you are both enjoying a good and prosperous life.
It was a great experience. The salaries of foreign photographers in those years would be very high. I think photographers were still using Mamiya 120 film cameras at that time, and the technical requirements for photographers were relatively high. Yumi Katsura Studio was brilliant in those years, but it has been closed for many years. I used to work in a Kodak store called Blue Sunshine, which used to be in Tianjin Street. There is a photography studio called jiarenfengqing in Ramada Jiuzhou Hotel opposite the Pearl of Bohai Sea. I also worked there.
So much has changed. I have a lot of great memories being an international student there back in 2006, back before the metro and all that. Really amazing place and friendly people. Miss those cold nights throwing back 羊肉串儿 and 雪花啤酒.
Wow - really? I was there for 6 months in the Bohai Pearl hotel, working in the photo studio as a photographer (introducing Dalian to digital portraiture). I watched a lot of the neighborhood getting knocked down near the hotel - very sad. I loved Dalian so much, I would walk all day long on my days off. Such a perfect city - too bad it was the year of SARS or maybe I would have stayed 😮💨
I was here in 2006, there was a guy with a go cart looking thing with a fixed parachute on it, he was giving paid rides. I thought it was funny till that thing took to the sky, shocked me. He circled the area from like 30 meters high and landed and took on another paid passenger.

This tourism project should be in Xinghai Square, but now it's gone.
And 15 years later, it now looks much better.

It's super noising that the useless speakers are super loud on the street. Government should ban those speakers.
