  • In 2008, Julie Christie was the frontrunner to win the Best Actress Oscar for Away from Her, but then she lost in a surprising upset to Marion Cotillard for La Vie En Rose. In this video, I break down that year's captivating Oscar race and discuss the reasons why Cotillard defeated Christie for the award. #oscars #academyawards #bestsupportingactress #tildaswinton #cateblanchett #rubydee #brianrowevideo

Marion Cotillard’s performance was sensational. That marcel scene took me out and now looking back I’m like why nominate the others when it was her Oscar to begin with. I know people are sick and tired of Biopics but if the actor does their homework and really becomes that person they does BECOME that person you never forget their performance

Cotillard's performance in La Vie En Rose was so utterly deserving of the award (Christie's is also top notch but more subtle as you say). Fantastic that even despite everything working against her (lack of name recognition for Cotillard, the film being in a different language, lack of other nominations - even if Away From Her had the same issue, it had an "above the line" nomination for the screenplay in its favour), Marion was victorious and her performance has rightly gone down in history. It was also great to see her nominated again a few years later for Two Days, One Night even if she probably had next to no chance of winning that year.

Like Glenn, Julie won the 3 precursors ( gg drama, cc, sag). She even won 2 Trifecta (National Society, and New York Film Critics Circle) and a lot of regional critics awards. Glenn unfortunately won neither of the two.
Like Olivia, Marion won the Bafta and GG Musical/Comedy. Both won the Los Angeles Film Critics Society Awards and many regional critics awards too.
I would say that the Marion-Julie battle was even more serious than the Glenn-Olivia one. The former literally split in all the precursors and critics awards. Probably, the toughest in history.
What's good about Julie not winning is that she already had won in 1965, thus, not pushing campaign throughout the awards season. Marion exactly did the opposite thing. Her team extremely pushed her way up to the top.
But when Forest opened the envelope, Julie thought she would get it. She was even checking her speech down the purse. It took her a second before eveything sank in that her name wasn't called and she splashed a fake reaction.
Marion deserved the Oscar as proven by her terrific performance. But Julie's nuanced, controlled, subtle and emotional delivery of her role could be a good choice too. Like I said, it was a very tough race.

Christie was a much weaker front runner. It was never a slam dunk for her. It wasn’t for Close either obviously but I personally feel Close came closer to beating Colman than Christie did to Cotillard. I don’t think there was a lot of passion for Christie.

Cortillard’s Oscar win made me realize how important a BAFTA win truly is when it comes to predicting an Oscar win. Yes there are BAFTA member who are Academy voters but BAFTA’s have good track record in predicting the Best Actress races. Surprise wins like Olivia Colman in The Favorite and Francis McDormand in Nomadland all had previously won the BAFTA before surprising at the Oscars.

It's not the BAFTA alone. Since the introduction of BAFTA, only one lead actress, McDormand, won with the BAFTA only. Otherwise, an actress needs the Globe or SAG. However, the Globe/BAFTA combination is much stronger than Globe/SAG. Unless your name is Cate Blanchett. Since BAFTA's move to a precursor status in 2000, only one actress won the Globe/BAFTA combination and lost, Blanchett for Tar. The ones who won: Nicole Kidman for The Hours, Marion Cotillard in La Vie En Rose, Meryl Streep in The Iron Lady, Olivia Colman in The Favourite, Emma Stone in Poor Things.

I have such fond memories of this season, I still remember this like it was yesterday, it was the first season I really covered from the start, a couple thoughts:
    1. Juno was expected to get into Best Picture that year. It was a huge hit.
    2. It’s interesting because the Golden Globes not being televised made Christie a stronger favorite than she actually was- Cotillard not being able to give a speech made more pundits(me included) more dismissive of her because of the foreign language barrier. A lot of people still thought Page was Christie’s main competition given Juno’s popularity as you pointed out. This year was unique in the Writer’s Strike overshadowing a lot of it.
    3. Cotillard campaigned HARD for this- she was on the ground and worked the voters like hell. Have you seen this documentary on her campaign? It’s very good. ruclips.net/video/-Pn9m48LBNY/видео.html
    4. It’s possible Cotillard could have taken SAG if those voters had gotten screeners of La Vie En Rose. They didn’t get them but Oscar voters got Christie’s and Cotillard's.

And I thought Cotillard was the front runner while Christie was second behind her but it's the other way around, remind me to Olivia Colman (vs Glenn Close) and Jessica Chastain (vs Kristen Stewart) winning. I already predicted that year she gonna win after watched her performance. The Academy did the right thing, she's one of the best Oscar winner. I ultimately went with Cotillard, knowing that subjective bias may have partially tilted my prediction. Christie had won before, albeit a long time before, and the movie wasn't widely seen. To her advantage, she is British and playing a character with a disease. Voters go for that kind of thing, if they see the movie. This time, I think the non-SAG winner had the advantage: by that time, experience had taught me to always favor the performing playing a real person (with bonus points if they're under heavy makeup) if it's hyped as a two-way race. The only time this has failed me since was my confidence in Tommy Lee Jones over Christoph Waltz.
Alas, Page will be lucky to ever be on the A list again. The career was in decline post-Inception anyway and the range was clearly limited from the outset.

I hope Elliot gets that chance.
Maybe he should collaborate with Gus Van Sant? Robin Williams and Sean Penn won Oscars from working on films directed by him.

Loved your analysis as usual. The only gripe I have is that you didn't feel it was necessary to mention to name the Director (Shekhar Kapur) who was at helm for both the Elizabeth films - wtf is "the same Director". That's just racist.

My biggest regret is that the reader and revolutionary road were released the same year. Had the reader been released first and revolutionary road been released the year after, kate winslet could have won 2 oscars back to back and beated meryl twice

Elliott Page was named "Ellen" Page at the time before the transgender surgery Page had in 2020, I wish that you would have explain that part and I don't really think Frances McDormand's win for Nomadland was a surprise win considering that the film would become a Best Picture winner and that she won at BAFTA.

    • @marlonbeltran1135

it was a surprise. Nobody predicted her to win even if she won BAFTA. Maybe because she already got her second oscar just 2 years before that

Cate Blanchett did not deserve the nomination for ELIZABETH: THE GOLDEN AGE. If you pay attention to the year that the movie takes place, she is supposed to be 57. Her character’s trying to have a baby at 57? Please. That was just a bad movie all over.

it wasn't suprise cause Marion Cotillard’s performance was one of the best deserving oscar wins ever, the scene when Marcel died worth 10 Oscars at least

    Another great video 👍

Terrific video, Brian! Marion Cotillard was terrific in La Vie En Rose. It is too bad Laura Linney didn't win the Oscar for "You Can Count on Me"...loved her in that film. Hopefully there is an Oscar in Linney's future.
