  • Aizu in Fukushima is just a 2-hour train ride from central Tokyo. The trip starts with a train ride to Nikko, home to the famous Nikko Toshogu Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There’s also the beautiful Kegon Waterfall nearby, though I haven’t visited it yet. Not far from here is Kinugawa Onsen, a well-known hot spring town.
The next day, the journey continues on a scenic mountainous railway route using a special limited express train. Along the way, you can enjoy stunning views of snowy mountains, rivers, and massive lakes that look like something out of Switzerland. One of the highlights is Ouchi-juku, a charming village similar to Shirakawa-go, completely blanketed in snow during winter.
The final stop is Aizu-Wakamatsu city. The original plan was to visit Lake Inawashiro, but heavy snow caused train cancellations, so instead, I explored the city and visited the castle.
