Thank you! 😊 I definitely get into color traps because if I make a big dyestock of one color then I use it in a bunch of videos etc. I'm in one of those with my filming today because I Have so much guar gum mixed up in the same few colors!
i always love your twisted skein videos, the colourways are always stunning! i had an idea the other day that i wanted to suggest to you. i had just made a knit blank on my circular knitting machine, and because those end up quite long and thin, decided to turn it into a 'twisted skein' for storage until i'm ready to dye, but i thought it could be interesting to dye the blank like that and see what kind of yarn that would make! i will definitely try this myself someday (i already have plans for this particular blank), but i would love to see you try it for a video!
I've had colorways that I've twisted and/or knotted and dyed in five or six separate colors, one color at a time and changing the twist between each. They're so beautiful, but they take a ton of time and effort to complete. Buyers sometimes don't understand why its priced a little higher. Its mostly labor. It usually takes more than one day to get through the whole process, especially when you're dyeing enough for a show, and sometimes working on multiple colorways at the same time. But my biggest fans love them, and they especially love that there's usually no pooling with these when knitted up. I haven't tried it this way with just one color before, I love the different depths of shade. And I agree, over dyed with a bright color would be really cool!
I can't even imagine dyeing enough for a show! I dye up 30+ skeins in a colorway a few times a year. Filming absolutely adds time to the whole process, though. I go faster when I'm not filming.
@@ChemKnitsTutorials lol, it definitely does! I’ve only filmed a couple “dye with me” videos, as far as dyeing goes, but those are no talking, just music. A show for me means taking between 400 and 1,500 skeins, depending on the type of show, how big and what the expected traffic is. I know some dyers take even more than that.
Haha, right at the end when you said you kept picturing this overdyed with bright blue, I laughed cause I was picturing it overdyed in either neon green or hot pink... or maybe broken Wilton violet.
I love the randomness of the color, I think it would look spectacular knitted up. I love one of the other commenters idea of adding bits of red, but I would only add speckles or small spotches .. I love random pops of unexpected color....even the oops of a speckle or 2 where it "didn't belong", adds character.
Oh WOW! I love this one so much & you gave me a mah-velous idea! I’m thinking of adding a few flecks of red in there too so I end up with white, black, grey, & red. Can’t wait to spend a day in the kitchen having fun. 😊
I bet overdyeing after two layers of black could be nice, too. I wonder it there is a more efficient way to do this. Honestly maybe doing a cold process would be faster overall - set up a bunch twisted and then each day retwist. Hmmm.... I'll have to think on this more. (I spent most of the day with one pot doing these three skeins so that is what is keeping me hesistant about doing this again to over dye, but I think there is a good posability here.)
It is currently in my etsy shop! I dye too much yarn to knit with all of it myself (Although sometimes I do go shopping in my own inventory!) www.etsy.com/listing/1403070505/variegated-fingering-weight-sock-yarn
So late to the party! Sorry. I missed this one. I have a magnetic hook on my worktable, well 15 if them, I got from Amazon. I hang the skeins and let them drip into a bucket with a colander in it. Yarn cools fast and no burned fingers. Learned that heat resistant gloves, aren't. The hooks can be removed. They just need to have something that's steel to attach to.
@@ChemKnitsTutorials Girl, I walked into this house, saw that garage, and put an offer in immediately! It was worth waiting to buy a home in my 50's. I lived in a double wide before. No storage at all.
There will likely be SOME pooling since there is a lot of the different colors, but the colors are overall pretty randomly distributed so the pooling would shift as time goes on. It also depends a LOT on the type of project and the gauge etc. I bet if I did a hitchhiker scarf (where the stitch number in a row changes throughout the project) there may be a section where I find some pooling, but it should be pretty random for a lot of it. I hope this makes some sense.
A good follow-up experiment would be to dye the 3 skeins, then dye 2 of them the second time, then just one of them thw third time to compare coverage.
I'm thinking of how I can do this in a less time consuming way - or I suppose I mean less of a single pot all day consuming way :D I have a fun idea I'm playing with that I'm excited to share.
OMGOODNESS!! Putting some Frozen on that yarn would be BEAUTIFUL!!!
Right?!?!
As soon as you showed the finished hanks, I said to myself, that needs to be overdyed in purple or blue!! 🤩
It would be super pretty!
I love when you do these videos.
Especially when you use colors you don't normally dye alot with.

I've defintely folded blanks to dye, but I'm not sure if I've twisted them... This sound fun!
Lovely yarn!
Thank you so much!

That turned out so good! I love the different shades of gray and black. Definitely adding this technique to my must-try list!
oh yay! I'm glad you liked it

OOOOOO!!!
WoW Rebecca this is beautiful.
If you combinated with red yarn you have a Cruela de vill colourcombo nice nice nice grtz Renate
Ooooo yes!!!

I think it would be super super fun to do this and then add more color for sure.

This is really beautiful. I’m excited to try this technique!
Thank you! 😊
I have found that when I put the lid on it feels like it takes less time for the dye to set, but I haven't actually tested that out.
It's funny - I'm not sure if I've observed that, but on a hot plate anything helps to trap heat.
It's quite pretty as it is. Do you know what you are going to make out of it?

I want a dedicated studio soooooo badly! But that's a side point ;)

How for do you need to let the water get? I’m afraid of accidentally felting the yarn but I am worried that I don’t let it get hot enough.
Awesome! Do you think this is variegated enough to not pool?
There will likely be SOME pooling since there is a lot of the different colors, but the colors are overall pretty randomly distributed so the pooling would shift as time goes on. It would be really pretty to do that over a dyed skein. That way, what shows through wouldn't be white
A good follow-up experiment would be to dye the 3 skeins, then dye 2 of them the second time, then just one of them thw third time to compare coverage.
I've thought about doing something like that!
