    Yeah, Krieg telling his troupes to "raise your" (very much metal) "swords on high" hits kind of different, once you realize he's a lightning dragon...

      No hes got a point; the lightning of this animated dragon is basically disintegrating anything it touches, burned to a smoking crisp in a second. So you'll note none of the main characters ever take a direct hit from it; there's no "It deals 60 lightning damage, so Grogs fine but the guards are all dead." Suspension of belief/plot armor* can only stretch so far.

    There's a reason Percy has been in the background a bit, it becomes clear why in episode 3. As for him having a gun, he has THE gun. The only one, he invented them. You'll learn more in the show.
    DnD dragons vary in personality in part due to color and in part due to age. The chromatic dragons (blue, red, green, white, black, as seen on the carpet) are evil aligned. Metallic dragons are good. There are DND stats for several dragon ages, from young to ancient.
    I started watching critical role in about 2015, at their 50th episode. I saw a fanart gif of Percy thinking up an invention and loved his design. When I saw Laura Bailey (vex) and Travis willingham (grog) were in it, I gave it a shot. They were the only two I knew from their work on Fullmetal alchemist, where they're Lust and Roy Mustang. I started playing DND a few months after! Still playing and still watching, though a little behind on the third campaign. Donated to the Kickstarter and Loved the show. I knew this story and was still on the edge of my seat, and they surprised us a few times with changes! It's also cool because every time we cut away from the party is something new to critters.

    Critical Role started out as a home game for Liam O'Brien's (Vax) birthday, after which they were approached by Felicia Day with a proposal to stream their game. The first two episodes are a abridged take on pre-stream events.

    I would argue that 'calculating' and 'ruthless' and holding grudges aren't actually opposing things. One can be *calculatingly* bent on some place or someone's total destruction. =) Glad you guys are enjoying the ride so far.

    • @EvilSnowVO

      Zemo in Civil War is a prime example of being calculatingly bent on someone's downfall

    • @Merilirem
      @Merilirem 2 года назад +9

      Indeed. I mean just because your calculating doesn't mean you can be reasoned or bargained with. She said if a dragon wants you dead it won't give up until you are. Thats pretty basic calculating character right there. Being unwilling to give up your end goal is different from being smart about it and even pulling back when its not advantageous for you to push forward. In the end the dragon was going to get what it wanted, it was just a matter of how.

    13:40 they ended up using more CGI than they wanted to simply due to budget constraints. The further the series goes, the more Amazon money CR had and the animation reflects that.
    They also spent a lot on voice actors for obvious reasons...lol

    • @cschwally
      @cschwally 2 года назад +11

      They also stated how difficult it is to animate a dragon and have it look good. So they CGI’d the dragon. .

    Also, another reason for the second action scene (escaping after killing Brimscythe) is giving a reason that they were only able to get a small bit of the dragon hoard rather than taking everything and not needing any more money the rest of the series.

  • @theanyktos
    @theanyktos 2 года назад +1

    18:10 the purpose of that collapse was that it prevented the (still relatively low level) party from having access to a literal dragon horde. From a balancing perspective you don't want them having that much money that soon or that easily.

    I'm so happy you kept watching this! This really gets better with each episode - the "real" show starts now. Loved your reaction. And I'm so glad you liked Gilmore, he's definetely one of the most beloved NPC's on Critical Role.
    I have no idea if you're intereseted, but:
    -I agree with you on the CGI, but the animators explain the reason for it. Apparently it's easier and it allows them to make a more detailed dragon, whereas if they had done it "normally" it looked less scary and intimidating
    -Dragons (in general) are both egotistical and cunning, so they can be extremely manipulative (like becoming a fake general to a kingdom to later take it over, like Brimsythe), doesn't mean they're impervious to being manipulated themselves
    -Grog says "I would like to rage" because the player (Travic Willingham) would ALWAYS say that whenever he "activated" rage (a dnd thing for barbarians, they become stronger essentially)

    • @ShadowyFox_86
      @ShadowyFox_86 2 года назад +4

      I adored the "I would like to rage" line. Right up there with Percy's full name and the Vex/Vax confusion on names. 🤣😂

  • @Starsaber222

    To provide some context, the initial Kickstarter goal of 750k was for an animated special that was probably intended to be these two episodes. Stretch goals that were passed on the way to the 11 million the Kickstarter ended at resulted in another 8 episodes to adapt one of their earlier story arcs in the stream. Then Amazon picked up the show, extending this season to 12 episodes and greenlighting a season 2.
    This campaign started out as a home game (actually originally a one-shot for one of the player's birthday), but when Geek & Sundry had an opening in their streaming schedule, Felicia Day offered them the spot.

    Dragons in D&D are categorized into Chromatic and Metallic, Chromatics are the evil dragons while Metallics are the good dragons due to Tiamat the five-headed Dragon Queen, and Bahamut the Platinum Dragon who split from Io the First Dragon, each of the metallics and Chromatics each have a counterpart that is determined by their breath weapon such as White and Silver having Ice Breath

A creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success. If a creature's saving throw is successful or the effect ends for it, the creature is immune to the dragon's Frightful Presence for the next 24 hours.
    Lightning Breath (Recharge 5-6). The dragon exhales lightning in a 90-foot line that is 5 feet wide. Each creature in that line must make a DC 19 Dexterity saving throw, taking 66 (12d10) lightning damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.

    Bring a flashlight. It's about to start getting wonderfully dark. I'm a fan of CR, and DnD, but never saw Campaign 1, on which this is based. I've thoroughly enjoyed this series both for the story, as well as a fan of DnD. It's captured the potential chaos, and failure, that the dice introduce to the game better than anything I've ever seen outside of an actual game. The heroes sometimes fail, not because it helps set up tension for the final success, as you find in so many stories, but because they rolled poorly, so something simple like picking a lock can become an almost epic task. In other words, it's not always predictable what will happen, and this series embraces that chaotic element of the game. And now that they're entering the true plot arc of the season, they can take a little more time to play this fully out. The first two episodes were an intro to set up the characters, the world, and your expectations of how this can go. Glad you've picked this back up. I enjoyed your first reaction, and was hoping that you'd come back to it.

    Hi there, I am actually a long time D&D player and fan ( I started in the early 1980's), I also am an avid Critical Role fan (since campaign 1). This show has more then fulfilled all my dreams and wishes as both a Dungeon and Dragons nerd, and a Critter. It always amazes me to see things that came into being because of a roll of a die fleshed out into the final product. Enjoy the ride I think you will both adore this show.

    Well done gentlemen keep up the good work.
    You asked how being a part of the critical role community affected the way we watched this series and so I have to say , going into this ad a long time critter my expectations were extremely high. After finishing it, I'm glad to say , I believe they met all of those expectations and then some.
    The first two episodes were definitely a set piece for the world and the characters that live in it. Starting with episode 3 the series really takes off, and goes down a storyline that I adore and believe you will too.
    Your gravitational pull towards Percy the character is about to be well rewarded, have fun guys and keep up the good work.

    Dragons in DnD are very intelligent creatures. They are very calculating but also very prideful. Chromatic dragons take insult to offerings very easily. Never offer a dragon something that you already possess, as it will see it as you saying that they cannot simply take it from your corpse if they wanted to. You have to offer to fetch something and bring it back. So bringing gold to the dragon will work so long as you keep returning. There is no one time payment, but it can buy time. If the dragon comes to you though, then you had better hope you can defeat it.

    I'm not sure why you think the various traits of dragons can't all be accurate. Vain, egotistical, arrogant, those are all in the same ball park. Also a person can be both ruthless and calculating, in fact most of the best villains have both of these in spades (Tywin lannister, the joker, emperor palpatine the list goes on). So yeah as far as standard dnd lore goes all that and more make up most evil dragons, as does the lightning breath since dragons have an affinity to a particular element like fire, cold or in this ones case lightning

    As a longtime Critical Role fan and a d&d player, I came in to the series expecting a story that stayed true to the campaign and characters it was based on, while still allowing for the necessary changes and time constraints that adaptation would require. I feel that they accomplished that. As much as I enjoyed the series, I'm also finding great enjoyment out of watching people react to the series. Specifically, I'm trying to stick to reactions from people who are not Critical Role fans or who only know a little about what they are getting into, because watching them get to know these characters and seeing their positive reactions to the series gives me hope that this series will last for more than the 2 seasons it's greenlit for. Also, with this show being so successful, it opens doors for other content creators to potentially expand the entertainment industry in new and exciting directions.

    I know the show and the setting very well (have watched all 3 campaigns so far and been playing a long while) and these two episodes def were mostly intro and setup for me also! I like them, but the show didn't take off for me until they started actually exploring the characters in episode 3 onward.
    Which makes sense, since these two episodes were almost a pilot together and meant to be standalone. I don't think knowing the show had any affect on my enjoyment going forward, though - they tell a good story, with good characters, and seeing it the first time would be just as cool as seeing it for the second

    Early in but actually it is a D+D Dragon, Blue Dragon to be exact D+D has different colour Dragons, and also different classes. You have the Chromatic, and the Metalic which is the biggest split. Chromatics are Gree, Blue that sort of colour while Metalics are Gold, Silver etc. It also tends to hint at alignment, but mainly the different colours will have different breath weapons.
    Blue have Lightening, and are usually evil

    Indiscriminately ruthless and calculating are not mutually exclusive. For the dragon, being offered gold for peace is a null point when it could raze the kingdom and take the gold for itself. The calculating aspect is how he goes about weakening the kingdom to get it done effectively.

    Vain ego maniacs, relentless and can't be reasoned with, and cunning with deep machinations are not mutually exclusive character traits.
    That being said, dragons are individuals and they won't all be exactly the same. It like saying dwarves are greedy or elves are arrogant, it's not universal statements. For that matter different color of dragons lean into different character traits. White are the most feral and love the hunt, green tend to be the most cunning and prone to politics, etc.
