I feel the Asphyx comparison is a bit iffy because Asphyx are more doom-laiden death metal rather than death-doom (likes of Winter etc) where doom metal is the backbone of their sound. I haven't listened to Konvent yet but from the short snippet, they sound death-doom. But thanks for your review, they definitely sound interesting and will check them out! :)

I actually want to congratulate Sarah about the next Smouder album. I've just heard the new song " Dream Quest Ends" and it is awesome!! Can't wait for check out the whole new Smoulder album!
Love the record. Amazing. And when I saw the Puritan Masochism video showing that it's an all female band I was blown away. Glad to see there is alot of interest in the band, but I am impatiently awaiting someone to slate an interview with Konvent. I want to know more about the band's dynamic and how their all female lineup deals with traversing the nearly all male doom scene.

I have that Swallowed album. Truly oppressive, bludgeoning, and schizophrenic creepy! To me, the band Evoken are one of the greatest death Doom bands ever. Another great detailed and informative review, Sarah!
Danes put out good music. No shocker, but have to give this group a listen. Huge death doom fan so this should check all the boxes for me. Nice! Spectral Voice are awesome BTW. Haha
I love the way the Rikke enunciates. Masterful singing of death doom. Her delivery is more evil and impactful. F`s, K`s, T`s, plosives. I’m not obsessed with it-it’s just great technique. And, I feel it. The album's songwriting is ok...representative of many debut bands. A bright future, tho. I'm probably the only one---I would love to see a Konvent partner with Pat Benetar (and her songwriting partner, Niel Gerardo)...and remake Running with the Shadows of the Night. Death Doom is hyper-dramatic and ridiculous--why not?
I bought their Demo, (which is literally called "Demo"... sure) and the album. Ultimately the demo falls flat, but on the album you can hear the band improving as musicians and song-writers. I was on board for half of it, but they lost me a bit towards the end. I don't know if this is an inherent problem with the Doom genre itself, but hearing one note per beat over and over, does get old. My only other reference is My Dying Bride, whom for the most part of 30 years have never written boring songs. What really shocked me is that there is only 1 song with palm muted power chords. That is quite bold or daring these days. Of course a reply will list X number of bands who do it sparingly... whatever. The album is not bad at all though.
I’ve changed my mind on this album-particularly the track Ropes, Pt. 2. You could send that track with (those of) Glenn Gould, Coltrane, and Selda Bağcan, Ec Man Iötna-out onto the final space probe. Call it a day. Perhaps, I’ll feel differently, later.

I loved the record but as you say it really doesn't reinvent the wheel. It's a cool album and that's it. Also, when you say you don't remember any riffs after 19 spins, but later you say they write great songs, it kind of contradicts one another.
This is exactly why this album shouldn't get a 4/5. You hear 30 seconds into one song and you have heard the entire song. There is no variation on this thing at all. Not sure why people are praising it that much. It has fantastic vocals, but everything else is extremely mediocre. I know opinions are a thing, but that statement alone is super contradictory.

Konvent is awesome, but Napalm Records definitely did them no favours with that press release. I'd say a 4/5 skull review is appropriate as it is a strong death/doom offering, but nothinga bout it is groundbreaking.

Early Access isn’t a perk since most metal heads have a short term memory and we forget to check that shit. A Patreon only album review just might be what’s gonna bring in more subscriptions to Patreon for ya’ll.
I actually like their stuff for what it is and believe they are super nice ladies from listening to interviews with them. But to give them a 4 star for a well produced 1st demo that shows through its lack of dynamics and extremely early song writing skills is a disservice to them as the promising band they could be.
Most debuts are like that, they sound generic because it's just all the influences combined, and then on their next albums they developed their own sound, like Show No Mercy of Slayer, that even then band acknowledges it's just a rip-off or their influences, and then they releases Hell Awaits that was a big change of sound.
I've listened to the album, I've been really underwhelmed, so I felt the presence of a sexist elephant in the room. Would it be so hyped and overselled if it wasn't an all female band? I feel it is worth to say it, as Banger is a very attentive channel to equality and quality issues.

Asagraum is black metal band (good IMO) and like Konvent they don't sing about topics or sell themselves specifically about their gender. I think it says more about western culture than it does about the artists. The best thing the both of you could have done is not have brought up this "elephant" in the first place because then you are taking the bait that journalists like Banger are placing. Just move on and listen to the record or don't. Simple.

When you have RUclips channel #a&preacts act like this album is next Reign in Blood, Beneath the Remains or even close to anything #amenra has done is laughable and screams shilling for the label. Thing is we should say something, because there is many bands that spent years honing their skills and have produced stellar material but receive much less praise as this 1 skull record is applauded as a 4 star masterpiece?????? If your going to give props to a female band how about #PrometheanMisery who is 1 women making music that has depth and ethereal moments. Geez man, Bell Witchs 70 min song with just bass and drum and some synth has more song writing skill that this basic stuff, applauded as god-like for some reason.

And I’m a old school death metal fan but I hate when bands sing with that gutteral style vocals. I think you should sing with your lyrics being distinguished. This is a good album, but it doesn't scratch the same itch for me as The Blind Leading the Blind - 1914 or Dead Words Speak - Doom:VS
That 1914 album is incredible. It was on my 2018 AotY list, and I still listen to it regularly.
