People don't realise just how important the Grand Slams are for lower ranked players in order for them to continue their career. Even making it into qualifying can turn around a players career temporarily.
Ya that's true. I wish the lower ranked players were highlighted more in the media's eye. Even a player ranked around 80 or so, even though they're making a good living, nobody really cares about them

Someone like Tsonga who made the 08 Oz Open final as an unseeded player probably allowed him to continue pounding around even in 2020
is it possible for professional tennis to change its format?....like from being a tour format into a league where players don't need to travel to one place to another in order to compete.....I think the present tour format is a big disadvantage for this sport....many talented individuals would shy away from it and just choose other sports like football or basketball
Novak talks about this problem very often. It's so hard for players outside top 200.
Novak wants to slide more prize money towards lower tournaments and more money towards first rounds.
Thats why Novak together with Vasek Pospisil and Milos Raonic created the Players-only union PTPA, Propessional tennis players association, because of that problem. Novak has concern to the low ranking players.

I would be more than happy to have like, $100.000 right now for my achievements so far in career. I could invest most of the money, save some, and waste some, start off a business, still work, but be happy nevertheless..

It has been mentioned numerous times how much has Novak's father invested into Novak. He went into debt with some usurers/loan sharks at some point because he believed in his son.

What a goat. I play at a lot of Spikeball tournaments and no one makes nearly enough money to not lose money on average. All about the love of the sport

As a former Professional Tennis player, I can tell you that you nailed it!!! That’s exactly how our sport works... however, you missed out on club tournaments and DavisCup earnings:) I was around 150 to 300 player and with sponsorships and Club + DavisCup made a decent leaving:)

Let this video be a warning for those who call a player they see on TV a "pushover" just because they lose in first round to Nadal, Djokovic, Federer, Barty, Halep or the Williams sisters. Any player who qualifies for an internationally broadcast tournament and even has the chance to face any top 10 is good enough to beat 99% of the global population with an arm tied to the back. And any player who manages to enter the top 1000 of the ATP or WTA has more than justified their bid at professional tennis, let alone the top 100. They may not win Wimbledon, but that doesn't mean they haven't made it to the top and that they aren't WAY better than any RUclips "coach".

Crazy to compare the 195th ranked tennis player to the 195th ranked player in football, baseball, hockey, basketball etc. It makes me think tennis should create more leagues to help the lower ranked players play on teams to generate some revenue. Thanks again for putting this together. Definitely a must watch for young juniors and parents.

Not really. image if football was 1v1. The 195th player wouldn't even make it to the lowest professional league in football if that were the case. But as it's 11 a side a player ranked 195 would be considered a very good player.

I just saw an interview of Rublev, where he said the costs of his coach and physio are about 600.000 per year, and the coach gets 10% of his prize money
That's the price to be a top 10 player
10 percent seems pretty low normal, if coach is really helping you to improve and win something, and year is long period, its also probably included with coach expenses like he travels with you you dont need to pay nothing else for him just what you mentioned

And this is just about the US. Consider the countries where ITF tours don't take place. I think India has about 3-4 ITF events per year. So players have to travel to other countries to play these events.
I realized all this 3-4 years ago and said bye-bye to tennis. Now I just play on weekends, just as a hobby.
That's so true. When I played in SGFI, my mind was boggled to see how mostly all the players were from well-off families. Not to take anything away from those players as they're without a doubt very talented, but for players from small towns and middle-class families, it's extremely difficult to pursue a sport like tennis.

@andreasmissiroli yo no need to scream dude. And yes, these people had the motivation, and most of the time had the luck to be noticed by someone important enough to make them climb the ladder. The thing is, there are tens if not hundreds of thousands of people like all of these you mentioned, who were about as talented as them, and never got the chance to show their worth. This is due to luck.
@andreasmissiroli what I'm saying is that s tonne of people did the same kind of bold decisions as the people you mentioned, but who eventually failed to break though due the randomness of events not being with them.
I love how it shows 4 pictures of Gulbis as the narrator talks about unknown players "grinding it out", barely getting by.
Gulbis comes from one of the richest families in Latvia.
He was also at one point a top 10 player so he did definitely have a spot on our TVs albeit briefly

Great video! My dad and uncle played professionally reaching a high of 100 in doubles, but the financial commitment to get to that point saw them lose tens of thousands of dollars. My dad has always told me that if I'm playing for the money, I'm in the wrong business. He says that the real value comes from the experiences that you have, the ability to do what you love while travelling the world and experiencing different cultures.

We as fans play some part in all of this. If we searched out and attended lower-level tournaments to support, there would be move revenue to pass along to the players. I know it may be a small issue (compared to the huge disparity), but it would surely help.
AT EXACTLY 6:36 IF YOU PAUSE I AM THE BALL KID ON THE COURT BEHIND THE PLAYER IN YELLOW. I was a ball kid at the Little Rock Open and got Noah Rubin to sign my bag. We also still talk sometimes through Instagram dms.

It's like this in many things; sports, acting, music, etc. Very few are making the big money and people have to make as much as possible while they can. And it's only becoming even more competitive.

Fun fact, Since you mentioned baseball triple a as a comparison for the challenger level in tennis. Triple a players in baseball would probably have a heart attack if they were told they were gonna make 60k a year. Since they make around 2800 dollars a month and only get paid for the half year the season is active. so around 15 k a season, probably a bit less. The 2800 is also a massive increase compared to just ten years ago.

in order to really illustrate the reality of the game of tennis
Tried my hands at ITF organized tournaments after moderate success in USTA team tennis.
My doubles partner and I did well in a few tournaments at high altitude (we were both from salt lake city ,utah) . we both realized that many people have been groomed since grade school and have a decade of experience before I picked up a tennis racket in high school.
Our best results was about $2500 take home for a single challenger event .
This is why Djokovic formed new players asossiation, but yet Nadal nor Federer didn't want to support him, rich will to stay rich while poor will stay poor that's how the world works and even the current No. 1 can't change it

This is great content and I think it is very interesting to recognize how similar competitive prize structuring is for certain (non-team) activities. Odd similarities in things from tennis to fighting game e-sports.
Once again great content about something i've always wondered about the professional circuit.

Golf and baseball are better chances for low ranked players.
I remember hearing a story where the NHL asked one of their highest ranking players how much they should pay him per year. He wrote down the number 35000. They accepted the deal, and payed a *top five ranking player* no more than _minimum wage._

This tennis circuit seems very similar to the Poker circuit. So many players compete in tournaments all over, and its fun to go around and compete, but fact is vast majority need a true full-time job outside of poker to sustain the costs to keep the thrill of playing in the circuit (with the carrot of a potential big payday if one gets very lucky).
If your ranked outside the top 500, it really helps to live close to where a lot of future tournaments are held. Some places (like Heraklion in Greece) hold tournaments several weeks in a row and you can stay and play at a resort at low season prices. Are domestic flights in the US really 700 USD btw? You could do a 4-5 cities tour in Europe for that money.

Its called a pareto distribution, the same distribution appears in nearly any competitive field you care to look at. The flatter the distribution, the lower the payoff to be at the top but the more you earn to be in the middle and bottom.

The 1700 guy would easily get a tennis coach job for a high school tennis team.
This wasn't that much of a surprise considering how much of an elitist sport tennis is.
It's not because tennis is an elitist sport, it's because anything remotely similar to tennis's economic structure (individuals building their own brands in an attendance/travel-based environment) is incredibly skewed. Even pro wrestling (which is predetermined and more entertainment-based) has a similar structure.
Jim Duggan (winner of the first Royal Rumble) estimated only 120 people hold contracts and the rest would drive "200-500 miles for $25" according to (former WCW champion) Diamond Dallas Page. Of course, it goes without saying that the people at the top earn millions of dollars per year...

I would just absolutely love if I could play futures and challengers tournaments every now and then when I'm older. My dream (obviously besides making it full time pro) would be to play throughout college, get a good job after college and play every now and then in futures and challengers

After a bad start, the rest of the presentation is pretty good and shows that though the pot of gold is big for the top players, the chances of success are small and thousands of players make nothing in the end. On coaches, I always wondered how much they charged. One think that may be missing is that there are players who are financially supported by investors, whether it be family, friends and local business people. They provide all or part of the costs of competing in exchange for a contract giving them a portion of the winnings. If the player does “make it”, these investors make back their money and more.

In 1979, the ice-cool Swede Bjorn Borg was the first player to make one million dollars in prize money in a season.
I've played on the court a few times @6:35. Not as a professional obviously ha. That's Rebsamen Tennis Center in Little Rock, Arkansas. Pretty cool to see in the video.
