- We share a look inside Community First Village, a beautiful 51-acre master-planned tiny home village providing affordable housing in a supportive community for the disabled, previously chronically homeless in Central Texas. It's currently home to 200 individuals in tiny homes & RVs.
As a way to invite the outside community in, they offer volunteer opportunities, events, and a bed and breakfast featuring classic trailers & tiny house on wheels. Also, a missional community lives and works on-site.

If they are already homeless, how are they supposed to be able to pay anything? I don't see bathrooms in the houses, but a big community one, is this correct??
@@gmc2156 It is my understanding there are full bathrooms in each unit. In regards to payment, I am not sure. I would certainly surmise they provide job counseling and opportunities within the community.

Love is an action, not just an emotion. Blood & sweat & love helped to build it.
Seriously why are projects like this not being funded on a national or even a world wide scale? This solves three problems that plague modern day society, rampant homelessness, the loss of community and self-reliance.
California needs to copy this plan
Unfortunately it is the NIMBY attitude from city planners down to the city residents that stop projects like this. I would imagine that there has to be real restrictions on who can live in the community otherwise it would go downhill very quickly. Drugs and alcohol probably forbotten. Other mental health issues that may cause security problems for the community as well. There are many causes of homelessness and many cannot be helped by just stuffing them into these villages. It is a start but far from a cure.
Quite frankly, I'm glad it isn't. A community and self financed model leaves it in the hands of neighbors and clients, then everyone has an investment in it's success. When does the government do anything without screwing it up?

This is such a wonderful idea. Someone needs to do the same for the elderly or disable who can no longer afford or want the huge houses we live in. Please, please help us.

Im in Brownsville, TX, and i know we have rv communities for the elderly with many activities. Winter texans stay there for a couple of months and the prices are very reasonable.
Such a wonderful idea such beaitiful homes. I wish we could have seen more of the house interiors and a little less talking. The "innkeeper's wife" wore me out (bed and breakfast?) but that's bec the gibberish of the farm guy had made me tired already. Farming is NOT about food production or not ONLY about food production? See, That either/or thinking, rather than both/and, will mess up a great idea and its explanation every time.

Bought (happy) tears to my eyes, am a professional but I always think 'there go I but for the grace of god' , as anyone can find themselves in a position of being homelessness. this points out the value of community and collaboration and non consumerism but being positively productive and creating and I love the permaculture idea of growing food. If I lived in USA this is where I would want to work there and will visit if I am ever in that neck of the woods in this lifetime. Jane from England UK

Besides lifting the Homeless out of abject poverty, it's also elevating their heart, soul, self-worth & dignity, & that is a beautiful thing. The fostering of community, & belonging is what EVERY human being longs for, and is what is missing in Most people's lives, not just the homeless.
This type of cooperative communal living is something that I wish could be expanded upon w/entire families, where obviously there would need to be larger size homes to accommodate families. I truly believe this kind of cooperative living would make us have a true feeling of re-connectedness that would ultimately fulfill a void that we didn't even know we were missing.
Obviously money had to be spent but really, all of this has been done with the power of people.
There is a real need for these, not only for formerly homeless folks, but for retired people. I'm staring down my golden years and they're not pretty, with rents so high and cost of living so high. I'd live in one of these in a heartbeat, at that cost. It's lonely living alone, much of the time.

I stayed a few nights in a tiny home rental there, the Dorothy house. It was so cute! It was such a great and unique experience! I wish more cities adopted this idea.
This allows dignity to again be part of an individual's life. Homeless people, their loss of that ties so much in to how the public sees them, treats and judges them.
Most homeless ppl on drugs. If they get a nice home like they will rent it out for drugs. Plus they have homeless shelters and they can apply and someone or doctor can vouch for them, that they not on drugs. Veterans should be automatic absolutely non -qualify. Freedom is not free and they have paid for our freedom.
There is such a need for these all over the country! I live in California, where the homeless population is out of control. Property is so expensive here that our children cannot afford to stay.
I live in northern CA. It use to be cheap to live here, but with so much immigration, it's now expensive. Kids today can't afford to live here on their own. When I moved into this condo community, I could afford it but now it looks like a place in Mexico, nobody speaks English.

That's the policies of a large part of the politicians regardless of party who serve their wealthy and corporate donors so as to construct laws that benefit those few rather than serve the interests of the masses. Dems aren't the only ones who create regulations. Get your head out your behind. Barely regulated and out of control capitalism is the problem. These corporations run wild, stash their cash elsewhere and don't pay taxes, and leave their problems for the same people to solve whom they've been exploiting for ages.

If someone if “chronically homeless” the responsible thing is to present them to a place like Haven for Hope in Texas. The bulk of homelessness is NOT Primarily because of high cost of rent or housing. The corruption of California government and liberal policies have magnified the problem making it easier to live a homeless lifestyle attracting more of the behavior that is accepted and incentivized. Homelessness comes from making bad choices staying addicted to drugs. It also includes mentally ill caused by drugs. There are a few who have no place to be institutionalized from organic mental illness or brain injury and that needs to be addressed.
Its so wonderful the sense of community...I love it im 74 and very lonely it seems like heaven to me.

I too am alone in life. I have family but they are widespread now and so not much communication. But if you can, all you lonely people, get outside and go walking. To give you purpose, go out as a photographer, an artist, write a book. It doesn’t matter if nobody is interested, you are. We need more people to be out and about just pottering. Why not , and at the end of it find a cafe or get your own drinks bottle out. It is called freedom.
All the lonely people who just shared should connect with each other! You all might be in close proximity to visit.
I was thinking the same thing. I'm 75 and living in a nice apartment, but there is very little community.
I see this housing as the future, especially if we are to have a sustainable Earth. And I mean not just for the homeless, but for all of us. More about people and environment than things! As an old woman I am glad to be alive to see such social change! Bonnie is part of what change looks like and I am with her!

I love this model, but let's remember to also *turn off the tap, not just bail out the water.* Let's support this/these villages, and prevent homelessness, too !!!
One income used to support and entire family, but going off the Gold Standard forced both parents to work, in many cases. Look up gov charts on how inflation took off in the early 70s, when it had been low year after year.
Our wealth inequality has grown drastically since NAFTA was implemented.
Look to how we can bring back manufacturing jobs, etc.
(fyi: I'm an independent voter.....and not a trump or biden fan.)

This is to help the homeless population. I live in Austin and can tell you there is no affordable housing here. Very expensive homes catering to the exodus from CA. Native Texans are out priced here with most homes starting in the $300ks. Very sad my Austin has gone this way. 😞
There is also gentrification of the east side, displacing blacks and Hispanics like it’s going out of style.

We could help to prevent homelessness, if zoning issues would loosen the minimum size requirements. Families, friends, groups could come together and pool resources. It’s so difficult for so many people out there. It takes a village. Maybe families would be stronger if we went to communal living.

So if you're homeless with no money you're still homeless. Cool village, ideas and they're actually doing something to improve the homeless situation and that's to be commended.
We hear you. Fortunately, many of the residents pay for rent through social security, at least partial employment, or several of the on-site micro-enterprise opportunities. Fortunately, the on-site bus stop helps many get to and from the village. Also, their modest rent comes with access to all community facilities and healthcare.
While that is true, it is working to address the issues at hand which is the skyrocketing cost of living, unaffordable rent, unaffordable homes. There are many different ways people become homeless, the lack of knowledge with money, unemployment, disability, medical debt, mental health issues, addiction, etc... from watching this video it is obvious they are trying to correct the issues on many levels. Affordable housing, teaching skills, leadership, fiscal responsibility, etc... nothing in life is free but you can help give these people the help they need to live in society today which is extremely expensive.

I don't think it should be free, because as human beings we only appreciate something truly when it costs us some! AMAZING project! Kudos!!! The only vice I have is that it seems to be fueled by some sort of religious organization...and that's recipe for exploitation and worse... may put the already vulnerable homeless in another position of vulnerability!
My brother works for this village. He's a mechanic and he runs the auto shop (repairs). Its one of many facilities they weren't able to show. If you have no money, they simply give you a job. There is something for everyone. It will more than cover the cost of rent and that includes all bills and medical care. There is a lot of free food there also so the formerly homeless person is able to provide everything they need for themselves. Most of them are limited in what they can do because of disability, but those people get social security. The village helps them with all that.

Yeah, instead of building these ridiculous apartment complexes with rents 1000 dollars or more a month, and no utilities included. This idea is much better and looks nicer than the crackerbox palaces that most cities build, and charge an arm and a leg every month in rent. (Jan Griffiths).
Many don't want a Christian related community setting.
Low-income retirees would need private kitchen and bathroom facilities, not communal ones, especially with mobility issues.
I love that they approached this with the people they were serving in mind! God bless them all.
BEAUTIFUL START
My husband and I dreamed of doing this when we got married 12 years ago. Unfortunately, I required open heart surgeries and was not able to begin our Universal Plan...to bring houseless individuals back into our communities (world-wide), for them to lead productive lives. Our dream included learning what each individual has never done, such as horseback-riding, learning to play an instrument, seeing the ocean for the first time, etc. Then offering a solution to make that happen. As everyone knows, all work and no play is dull. Watching a movie on a big screen and eating are not good enough for the type of enjoyment that many seek. There are unknown reasons that cause houselessness. Doing activities you have never been able to do is a way for people to grow beyond their negative circumstances. Peace Dragon & Jon

I truly believe my purpose is to recreate the economy we now live in and it brings joy to my heart to finally see there are other people on this earth with the same idea, mind and heart like mine . I hope God truly gives me the opportunity to help this community and build more communities and opportunities for the less fortunate we all deserve to live on a equal level ! no more poverty, poor ,homeless, hungry or 3rd world countries. We create everything as humans there should be no reason people die on this earth from a lack of resources ❤️

Chronically homeless. How can one afford to move into this place? More needed to be said about the financial aspects of this type of community. I can see where it could definitely give people a leg up who suddenly found themselves still employed but priced out of the housing market. Several locations in all of California desperately need a few villages like this, though it's doubtful California would allow it. It must be working, so congratulations. But it would have been more helpful to know a few more details about the screening process, financial assistance, etc. And the term "chronically homeless " to me means those who are mentally ill and unable to work themselves out of their situation. It's a wonderful project. Don't misunderstand me, please. But for others who would be interested in helping the section of the homeless community a place like this would help, about ten more minutes of details would have been nice. God bless you for your efforts and I wish you nothing but success.

They said they give tours of the property, so I’m sure they could answer all your questions and more. I’d definitely contact them if it piques you’re energy. Hopefully even visit someday. I have a lot of questions myself, but I like what I was seeing.
There is a link to their FAQ and once you click around you call pull up their qualifying criteria, I read it and the only thing that I feel "iffy" about is they have to have "Qualifying Income" it did mention on site jobs but I feel like they should elaborate more as I'm sure there are homeless people with no income. The other things mentioned is a violent criminal record, which is understandable.
It a matter of connecting with people to form a humanitarian group and the funding is available by the NGO. You just have to be sure it’s not all about money being in the pocket of the person but use it towards the goal.

Awesome project. The majority of the homeless are not the people you see on the streets, but women and children. It would be great if projects like this would be made for that particular population, too.
Many homeless are disabled, women who went through bad divorces or persons who made bad life decisions. I would say most of my friends are individuals who live in Community First village as they are more real than the pretentious fakes you find in society......

Hi there! I live in Portland Oregon. I used to be a member of Hazelnut Grove. You can see me on the homeless videos and news interviews in Portland (4-5 years ago). I am SO happy to see that someone used our village idea and made it work! Your village is BEAUTIFUL! Our village died due to massive persecution from housed people and consequent stupid nasty infighting. HG tore itself apart, much to the glee of awful "fellow" citizens(housed people who enjoy abusing the homeless). I miss my little home and my mission! I'm okay. I live in an apartment where the VA stuck me. But it's just a guilded cage where I'm frequently afraid of eviction. Here they put people in the streets if they're smokers. Congratulations and KEEP GOING! You're SO beautiful. I'm so happy for you! Sad for me. I'm a disabled lady veteran. I'm looking at going walk about again in a few months--- trying to find a real "home", which is so hard to find in this country! My sister and I hope to find our place. We wanted to buy a plot of land, but I seriously doubt we'll have the money. I don't know how I'll do it with my disabilities. I have to use a scooter to get around. I'm older now too-- really not in shape to be homeless yet again. But I HAVE to find a HOME. It's such a little word that means SO much! Wish me luck.

I've known about Loaves and Fishes in Austin for several years now. Thanks, THE, for this video...you're helping to spread the word on the importance of the reality of true community, which the Tiny House movements serves so well.
I was so impressed by this project this is how it should be people should be made to feel like they have a comfortable place to live not just a shelter. And I assume you would they have to respect the property they can’t be tearing it up. Give people a sense of purpose and something for them to do every day if you have no sense of purpose you’re going to waste away

I am sitting here in total amazement of this AWESOME community!! I have never seen or heard of anything like this, which saddens me. This is needed in every major city in this country. As a country clearly we are going about the homelessness issue the wrong way. Many kudos and love to the founder of this spectacular concept. I must visit, learn more then do more. The landscaping is wonderful and I hope the administration can keep that mulch fresh over the years. I certainly hope the community garden piques the interest of the residents. Home grown is always better than the store brand. Best wishes with this project.

I love your Community Village it is Lovely! I use to work for the Denver Rescue Mission here in CO with the disenfranchised for all most 7 years. I'm retired now and I miss the people I had a chance to serve and the team I worked alongside with. I know how challenging the work can be and I thank you and bless you for loving the disenfranchised.
Wow, wow, wow. It's been my dream to build my own tiny home for a while now and even more so my goal after graduating. Studying community health and being recently involved in community outreach and mission work - I've dreamed how tiny homes / container homes could be used as a solution for a multitude of issues especially if used in a grander scale as residential communities just meeting people exactly where they're at. I wasn't quite sure how that dream would pan out and function in reality but I believe all the answers are right here in the Community First Village. I am in awe of this community and the heart behind their mission and movement. It honestly brought tears to my eyes and really hit me in my soul. And to top it all off, they're just a 45 min. drive away so you can bet I'll be looking up their website for more information and ways to volunteer. Thank y'all for posting this video! This is intelligent, caring and uplifting project, city or town. Why would 'someone' give a thumbs down to this idea of new beginnings? This type of care/growth will probably be 'financed' by non profit/grassroots/community/neighbors based funding. Every major city or town with a population of homeless families or persons, this would work well. Most people, don't know that the average homeless person are working people with full or two full time jobs! Congratulations Austin!

I am sure many people who are working and trying to make ends meet would like this option as well.
Especially older folks or folks who don't have families or a support system.

Yep, we need communities like this instead of high rent apartments. These homes are very cute, and will give the residents pride of ownership. Apartments just take your money, and give you a receipt. And they don't have that community feel. We used to live in one, and no one knew their neighbors. They just came home, went inside, and you never saw them. (Jan Griffiths).

I'm not homeless and this idea is extremely intriguing. Instead of working a job to pay the bills; live, 'work" and commune all in the same place. Sounds lovely.
This is exactly what Im talking about! This is what all governments need to understand. The world not only need housing solutions, we need communitiy systems, a culture of caring & providing. We are not only consumers or customers, we are human beings created by God to have fellowship, help each other, have vegetable gardens, etc etc. This model is a flowing system, providing, a little economy of its own and a program. You can provide even more features for this model if you can get finances: A little market where the residents can sell their goods, a hub where they can learn from entrepeneurs, work together, a library, bigger buildings with shops underneath, apartments above, a beautiful garden with walk way, murals, volley ball, mini golf, etc, tourist/visitor attractions, outdoor cooking area, homestead, etc. It solves almost all of the issues in society.
Yes We Do Need these type of communities.. freedom & healthy safe homes!
