  • Deobra Redden, the defendant who attacked a judge in her courtroom, pleaded guilty but mentally ill to attempted murder. The change in plea came in the middle of his trial. Redden can be seen on camera leaping over the bench at Nevadas Clark County District Judge Mary Kay Holthus. It happened as she was sentencing him for attempted battery, which he pleaded guilty to. Holthus was hurt as well as a courtroom marshal trying to protect her. Inside Edition Digital has more.

The criminal justice system depends on moral agency. If he had a psychotic episode that took full control of his brain then it is not fair to put him in a prison with those who have full control of their faculties. Successful insanity defences have the person in a psychiatric hospital to receive treatment.

This was a while ago so I don't have any sources, but from what I remembered, that court room wasn't originally build as a court room and had a lower ceiling than what was ideal. Because of that, she was pretty much on ground level rather than having an elevated seat like you would normally think they'd be sitting on.

The judge seems calm, likeable and logical. Not imperious type at all !

That's very unmerciful. All because we saw a Black man leap over a judge stand, and onto her.....People have brains, and some come into realization that what they did was wrong, so they ask for forgiveness and they apologize.
