HORUS HERESY LEGIONS LORE - SALAMANDERS THE ROAD FROM ISSTVAN
To commemorate the new single player campaign in the mobile, IOS and Steam game, Horus Heresy Legions, this video includes an overview of the events after the Drop Site Massacre of Isstvan V, but from the perspective of the Salamanders. Covering the travels and travails of the Primarch Vulkan and two of the leading lights of the Legion, so do watch on to find out.

The Salamanders are a noble Legion who suffer so much against their treacherous cousins and their foul warp spawn allies, but the like fire of their homeworld they continue to shine in those dark days. They are an example of what human spirit endure and suffers, but remain strong in their beliefs and is reforged with new purpose.

The fact that Magnus was the one to save Numeon and the ship carrying Vulkan home only makes their final battle more deliciously tragic and grand. Magnus's showed true strength in rescuing them and their kind words for each other is touching.
There is a great line in "Deathfire" about the defeat at Istvan 5.
The Iron Hands had the greatest number of marines left and they were fuelled by vengeance for Ferrus.
The Ravenguard was few in numbers, but they had Corax leading them, and a shadow war was perfect for them.
But the Salamanders was utterly smashed as a fighting force. Their numbers cut to the bone, their leaders dead and Vulkan missing.
I remember Deathfire, Vulkan uttered one single sentence in the entire book - thanks Nick Kyme!
I personally feel the Horus was desperate to smash the Iron Hands and Salamanders. Desperate. Imagine if they’d not been there? Been able to link up with Dorn and resist? Imperial fists and Salamanders? Or worse, all three? It would have taken decades to reach terra. They’d grind Horus assault to a crawl. :).
Poor Manders. :(. But now they have successors. Excellent!! :).
@@silversurfer8818 While that book had good moments such as Magnus saving the ship and talking to Numeon or the defence of Nucturn, it was indeed a long boring fight to get through!
@@baldermort Istvan 5 is really Horus's finest masterpiece as a commander. Having his initial plan ruined by the long fight at Istvan 3, he changes tact and creates the single worst military defeat in the Imperiums history. 250.000 loyal marines are slaughtered, one Primarch killed and another captured in just one day! Having isolated the 1th, 9th, 5th and 13th legions, the annihilation of the 10th, 18th and 19th left only the 6th and 7th in play.
Yes this didn't last and the loyal legions rallied somewhat, but still a masterstroke!

Vulcan is such a great character and the most kind hearted of the Primearchs. In one of the books during the Horus Heresy, when Vulcan reunited with Rogal Dorn, Vulcan gave Dorn a hug, not even Rogal Dorn (the coldest of the Primearchs) could refuse a hug from Vulcan.
He melted Dorn's Inuit-raised heart with a great big hug.
At least Dorn's back won't hurt, I hope.

The actor Michael Clarke Duncan would have been perfect for Vulkan. (Green mile, Armageddon) Absolute unit with a great laugh and old school actors charisma.

Been saying it for years myself. RIP to him I sure wish we could have seen that. He would have been perfect. Absolutely monstrous in size and presence and devastating in anger but also jovial and downright hilarious at times. Add the fact that he truly was a gentle kind and loving giant from all evidence available. Vulkan completely. Too bad he wasn't a perpetual himself so that maybe we could still have him because his loss definitely was a loss to this world. Love MCD. Amazing actor.

Magnus certainly did wrong but the fact that he was willing to not let his sons be damned by themselves is admirable and quite sad
Yes, he did make mistakes for sure. But unlike his other brothers, his mistakes were human.
The thing I will always dislike however, is his brooding in his tower on Prospero (alongside Space Wolf nearly endless plot armour).
Yeah Big E was honestly offering just a completely insane way to forgiveness. He was completely right in refusing it and its kind of stupid and infuriating that the reason Magnus didn't end up loyalist is the Emperor demanding Magnus be psychopathic.
If nothing else you could have USED THOSE TROOPS RIGHT NOW BIG E. Let them fight for you and if they die and get thinned out that's a win win and if you really need Magnus to wipe his legion out...maybe do it after you win the war? You big idiot? But the emperor has a confusing tendency to just genocide troops wholesale when they could still be useful and we all know who I'm talking about.

I always love it when our favorite servo skull talks about the Salamanders. To this day Baldermort's first video dedicated to them is still my all time favorite 40k lore video. I would also love a Barthusa Narek video.

The second tragedy. A heart in the right place, but tricked due to desperation out of the supreme bond he had with his sons. I'm solemn, brooding... All the pyromania aside, i've always had a soft spot for the Salamanders. Out of all the chapters roaming the vastness of the Imperium, the Salamanders always seemed like the only ones who somehow became *_more_* humane after their ascendance into space marines.
The Lamenters share the Salamanders love for the more squishy and downtrodden humans of the Imperium. They whittled themselves down to about only 200 Lamenters in TOTAL trying to save human slaves from an Ork invasion. Lamenters will always be my top boys because they're just unloved Salamanders.
yeah the Lamenters are my favorite chapter by far but Salamanders are a close(ish) second..

Came here from learning that you voice Distractible's intros. Your voice is absolutely incredible! The whimsical pitch variations you have whilst still having a rumble is so entrancing. I always follow along with your voice in their intros because it always feels right to start the episode that way and just makes my day 😂 it's cool to see your own work on these videos too, thank you for your brilliant work!
So I am already a massive super nerd fan of all things 40k related and spend as much of my limited free time that I can modeling and painting and reading and studying the setting. With that said if that were not the case already your videos would have caused this single handedly lol. Your delivery of the lore is beyond amazing mate and draws one in so completely one loses hours listening to stories and info that might already know as in my case. Cheers and plz never stop. I hope that like your coverage of Fulgrim and Dorn that you will do vids for every primarch in absolute detail specifically Sanguinius (BA here through and through lol). not ashemed to admit, when Vulkan returned I teared up a little.A completely enthralling tale.
That ending was fantastically done. Corax, Guilliman, Fulgrim, and Magnus are my favorite primarchs and the tragedy that is Magnus is so expertly presented here.

35:37 I've always heard that Vulcan was huge but I've never seen a image depicting just how huge he is. Dude makes Rogal Dorn, a brother Primarch, look like a Manlet/Squat in comparison. If I was a guardsman and saw Vulcan I'd shit myself on the spot, knowing how fond Vulcan is of Hugging and knowing that one of those hugs could snap me like dry spaghetti.

I love that each Primarch gets part or parts of the Emperors perfection. Like light split by a prism.
Vulkan has the Emperors' immense strength and status as a perpetual, but more importantly, he inherited the Emperors love for humanity. He genuinely doesn't see himself as being above even the most humble child. To the contrary, Vulkan would be broken before he saw a human child be harmed. I've never met a 40k fan who doesn't at least like him.
Then what is Russ and The Lion? Dorn is his stoic nature while Sanguinius was his nobility
