The song ain't anything special. Without the solo it would fall down. As it is the bass lets the song and Guthrie down. Lucky the drummer is there to save the day.
I also appreciate his articulation when he goes straight from one note to the next without an audible pick. I'm a brass player/newbie on guitar, but I think that's another of the ways he moves me, in addition to his shredding and bending.
Can you believe this is completely improvised? There were 5 takes, all different from each other. This one, either first or second take, was the one they went with.
Yes i believe it. He is literally the best guitarist of this realm at the moment. So lucky to meet him in milwaukee before his show for the 4th album. Chillest dude.
Probably the most incredible solo, because it fits the narrative of the song, specially the first 30 seconds when you can hear a guitar crying and going in different directions as if its trying to make sense of tragedy. To think its an improvised take makes it even more amazing, Mr. Govan is one of the few artists that can play with awesome technicality yet emotion and melody.
This is so cool to hear. You hear at 1:48 the high E string pop out of the saddle, which is easy to hear in the actual song. But something I never realized was, at 2:02, Guthrie goes on a run and tries to use the high E string lol. Seems like he forgot it happened not even 20 seconds later.
I met Guthrie at a clinic around this time last year. Managed to say “Thank you” for this particular solo. Mind blowing and gut wrenching at the same time. Crazy 🙏🏼
To me this solo expresses the charakters pain that he feels thinking about his wifes death. He feels guitly that he hasn't been able to save her even though he knows that it wasn't his fault. The solo shows the waves of pure pain that flow through his body, his heart and his soul. If pain had a sound, this would be it. This solo might be the most touching piece i've ever heared
There are loads of guitar players who have the chops, but I don't think there is another one on the planet that has Guthrie Govan's sense of musicality.
Oh my... I just heard the song, listened to it 5 times in a row and had to do some research on how he does the sustain part.. def no ebow. I thought I heard some "humane errors" in there which for me just makes it even better.. Best guitar solo I've ever heard hands down! Edit: My girlfriend wants to know why I'm drooling
www.premierguitar.com/artists/interview-steven-wilson-of-ravens-revenants-and-creeping-things Steven Wilson is still incredulous. “I mean, we’d gotten this LaRose Classic Jazz [Jazzmaster-style] guitar with a Sustainiac sustainer circuit in the studio on the second day, and I asked Guthrie what he thought of it,” Wilson recounts. “He picked the thing up and, literally, the first thing he played was the solo on ‘Drive Home’-the solo that made the album. First time, first take. Isn’t that insane?” Even crazier is that, during the solo-which Govan tracked live with the band-you can hear the E-string popping out of the saddle, forcing Govan to play the rest of the solo without it. “I later learned,” the Aristocrats chopsmaster explains, “that the Jazzmaster bridge/tailpiece design is famously ill-equipped to deal with extravagant string bending!” While Govan thought later versions of the solo sounded “a little more perfect,” the other players unanimously preferred the first take. “I suppose the first one did have a certain vibe to it,” he shrugs, “presumably because I was still getting used to an utterly unfamiliar instrument, which made me play a little differently. And, having played a lot with Marco in the Aristocrats, I think we had a couple of spontaneous interactive moments during that solo which could have only happened in real time.”
I've listened to this solo hundreds of times and am still always moved by it. Moved deeply. Jaw dropped. Soul stirred. In the way that Stevie Ray channeled something from beyond, Guthrie is a conduit of emotion deep from within the earth while at the same time from the deepest reaches of the universe. BTW....is that him vocalizing at 1:54 and following?
If anyone wants to learn this solo, I've just uploaded my cover in which I tried to stick to the original in the closest way as possible : ruclips.net/video/off8aFhgLjM/видео.html I will soon make the tabs and put the link in the description!
Hey man !! Awesome ! I was searching for a guitar backing track of the entire song. Is this possible for you to take me your files ? Or if you have, just in case, the song without acoustic and electric guitars ? This is for my final exam, i'm a guitar player in a professionnal school in France ! I have the 5.1 audio of this great album, but I don't understand how you do that ! If you just explain me how to do that, that would be awesome !! Great job anyway :)
You just have to open the file into Audacity and select only the center channel to isolate the solos (it's mono though and it'll sound much drier compared to the stereo mix). If you're looking for the backing track you will find only unofficial ones on RUclips. Good luck on your exam!
People are saying ebow but to me this sounds like it was played on a fretless? He’s known to use them, the slight in between pitches on a lot of the phrases seems to be the giveaway, anyone else think the same?
Alex Hernandez I’ve since found out it was actually played on a guitar with a sustaniac pickup! Can hear him picking a lot of the notes so ebow wouldn’t be the one (at least for the recording)
You're learning the solo, it's taken months to get your technique up to scratch to play the fairly fast parts in the middle with any competence. You get to the 2 minute mark, the solo is winding down, it can't get any worse can it? Then he brings out the most ridiculous 2000 bpm lick to end the solo on. This is going to take another few months.
You've got good ears, but I do not believe that is a "wrong note". It sounds more like a sonic artifact, the source of which might be any number of things. Perhaps one of the strings involved in the bend that is not being played has popped out from underneath Mr. Govan's grasp for example. But the note is part of the harmonic ecology he is mining, it is on pitch, and if anything, it makes the whole affair that much more human.
GuitarUniverse2013 Don't disagree with your explanation....I've heard this slightly odd note since my first listen some 5 years ago....I always took it as a partially fingered fret (as the space between the notes is smaller)....thus the pitch is a bit wanky(sharp to my ears)
Guthrie actually played this whole solo on a totally unfamiliar guitar which someone had just sent Steven Wilson. It had a sustainiac setup (I.E. why it's capable of sustaining so beautifully and infinitely), and this was Guthrie's FIRST take of the solo. That sound that you hear is actually the sound of the string popping out of the nut because he was playing it so intensely.
Much like Samson, if Guthrie ever cuts his hair, his guitar skills will be cut in half (still leaving him as the best in the world). But the second part of the curse: if he ever takes a bath, he becomes Tom Morello… So Much Worse! 😝
Gary Hill sent me here - "so much emotion" ? yes Zero from me - compared to Tony Iommi - Lonely is the word and at least 30 others etc . I will try and listen to this again but my Staffie playing with his chew toy has more emotion than this. Thanks Gary cut down on the ice.

It's not one or the other, they song and the solo work together in harmony. Atleast, that is my opinion.

It changed my perspective of music in a way.

A lifetime achievement solo
This solo is as deep as one made by David Gilmour, very touching.
As deep? I'd say it's much deeper than that.
Perhaps, I just respect Mr. Gilmour solos. Cheers!
Guthrie is just in another level... Gilmour is a legend, but Govan is in another level
