Thanks for the Video. What I don't understand: Why can't I give objects an auto or 100% width - so that they use the space in the browser's viewport, if available? I always have to work with breakpoints.
It would be great if it was possible. Unfortunately, the Figma preview is not rendering the design like HTML elements. So it is not like how the browser really renders a website. That is why we can not use the 100% to fill the whole view port.

How do you do this on the free version of figma since they don't have variable usage
You are right. I am not using the free version. However, you can get a student license if it still applies to your conditions.
What you can do is search for some plugins for responsive layout design. That is one option as well.
