As much Austronesian as Melanesian - Papua and Maluku (Raja Ampat and Tidore/Halmahera included) people carry characteristics of predominantly Melanesian but culturally also Austronesian traits - They call it Malayo-Polynesian. It is because historically the Melanesian men would seek out Austronesian wives to their chiefdoms - creating a blend of cultures > It is said that in this area the ancestors of Polynesia originated.
