The reason for me is that sometimes if the wind i s strong enough, that it is impossible to steer downwind through a gybe..or it takes far more sea room to gybe. In tight quarters before a race that it untenable

Hi, correct me if I am wrong. But isn't it dangerous to hold the boom on downwind?? if a gust of wind comes they can get hurt.

So dangerous holding the boom on downwind... why not trimming tight and releasing afterwards?
