How to Install Lone Rider Motobags on a BMW R1250GS

- Опубликовано: 7 янв 2021
- The Lone Rider motobags are a semi-rigid luggage or pannier system available for a huge array of motorbikes, able to mount to existing luggage racks or alternatively, you can purchase Lone Rider's own. This vid covers the unboxing and installation of a set of Lone Rider motobags on a BMW R1250GS.
There will be a full indepth review coming of the bags once I've had a chance to use them properly - COVID severley restricted any trips on the big tractor in 2020.

Looks like a cracking product! thanks for showing them, cheers.
They looked quite fiddly initially but I could see their advantages once installed.
So tough, flexible and most importantly.....waterproof 😉
Many thanks, great video.
Looks very nice, great video!
Great vid, nice seeing the beast in the corner
Always a joy to watch 👍😎
Thank you for this video and your tips, then to see this is very easy the installation. I like the Lone Rider Products !
Fantastic bags... Really nice vid. Thank You.
Cheers, glad you liked it 👍
Thanks Bruce another great vid. I have a Tiger 800 XRT with solid ally luggage but found this very interesting and informative. Love your channel keep up the good work. Cheers from Dave in Ozz :)
Thanks Dave 👍
The Loan Rider gear looks good.Thanks.
The quality looks tremendous 👍🏍💨
Aye it’s impressive isn’t it, very well put together
Thanks for the review, mate. I have been interested in these for a while - though I find the colour a bit boring, that semi-rigid concept looks really convincing to me.
Looks like great quality best I’ve seen but for me Kriega tail packs. Cheers Bruce great review
Happy New Year Bruce! Nice system from Lone Rider. BMW Atacama soft luggage, built by Mosko Moto, is definitely worth a look also and is around the same price point. Have it on my GSA and love it. 👍🏻😁
Nice review - subscribed 😀
Thanks bud 👍
Great vid Bruce! Cheers 🍻
Thanks Dave 👍
Thanks for that.. great system..
Good video helped me a lot
👍
Brill work mate, made all the mistakes I would make I to have 2020 hindsight
Nice luggage buddy, for a moment I thought I'd clicked on a Mototrek video when I heard the drums 😂
Just got them yesterday, Thailand …. thanks for your info bro
I admire your perseverance, looks like a very fiddly and messy system to install! I am not a huge fan of scaffolding on a bike, however I appreciate the panniers do look well constructed and robust, but wow they are expensive!! Thanks for the review :)
Purchased on Black Friday still expensive but at over 30% discount on the day was worth a punt (as you can see ) been looking at several different types but settled for the LR after watching your vid . 👍
That’s spooky timing!
I have been looking at these recently,
I really like how they can collapse when empty. Also that Molle system is the mutts, you can attach anything and everything to them. That’s decent.
Not sure about a padlock, there has to be a smarter way than that surely...
Just need to find a buyer for my Aluminium panniers now, if there’s someone out there...!?!?
I have had a set for about a year. I have had no issues with them AT all. They may have helped the bike nap a few times.... They still look brand new.
Nice presentation and some very helpful tips I hadn't found elsewhere. Thanks very much. This video made me subscribe to your channel. Cheers.
Thanks, welcome to the channel 👍
Great video. Thank you
Great video Bruce, love the way you show the genuine teapotone mistakes. I have a Kreiga rackless system but Lone Rider lockable soft luggage is definitely a product worth considering especially if someone has concerns for security. Considering the locks on hard panniers, I would suggest the Lone Rider system is more secure and you can change the locks to whatever type you want.
Cheers Ray
Great bags Bruce especially if you intend to go off-road as they will also protect your bike if you get a tumble or three! my preference are the Vario cases for touring as they can be securely locked when the bike is parked up.
Thank you Bruce for that. Baggage on order as a result of you!! for my Tiger Rally Pro
Wow cheers Eurwyn, glad you liked the vid bud, let me know what you think of your kit once you’ve got it 👍
Thanks teapot 👍🏻
I'm completely torn, was planning on replacing my RT with a brand new one next year, now thinking constantly about the GS..........It looks amazing, and I love the look of the Moto bags you just installed (great instructional video BTW). Bike is due an MOT next week, I think I'll have to have a serious look at the GS, maybe a test ride. As always, love your content :)
Hey you 🤪happy New Year 🏴✌️
very good video. thanks
Cheers Leo 👍
Great review Bruce👍......hope that's paint on your joggers.😁
😂
Thank you man 👨🏻
Love the honesty with the mistakes Bruce, we all make them don't we 😠. Look good but rather pricey, I think this style of bag is the way to go.
Nice look T pot 👍🏽 have to ask about where is the lock tight on the small bolts?
Love the safety footwear. 👍😂
Well done, Bruce. Thanks for making my mistakes for me ;)
My pleasure Adam 😉
Hey Bruce, good kit. Do you have underfloor heating in the garage. You look like you have no shoes on 😂😂😂
I didn’t! It was summer so nice and warm 😉
Kudos Teapotone and thank you for this tutorial. I watched 5 to 6 videos from Lone Rider and not a single one pointed the camera inside the bag and show in details how to fit the hard plate. All what you see is one of their guys hunched over the bag with his hands inside. For the price we are paying they should do better tutorials or provide some with the bags. Like do and don’t, how to care etc…. They should pay you for this video. 👏👏😂
Keep safe Bruce 👍
Cheers bud, you too 👍
Interesting review, hadn’t considered the thought on aluminium luggage crushing legs!
More and more reviewers have been mentioning this risk over time.
I personally haven’t experienced the hard panniers trapping me or causing injury, but plenty of people have commented or messaged me saying they have 🤷♂️
I have seen the hard panniers cause a fair bit of damage to a bike though when it’s gone over, they wrenched the rack and twisted out some of the bolts - don’t know if that in turn did any damage to the bike frame etc 🤷♂️
Awesome thanks Mate :-)
Hey Bruce - great video, love the fact that you show the mishaps... Just not convinced by the product. Price is high for what it is, compared to ally luggage. FYI there are Bumont panniers that are 100% waterproof. But at the end of the day it is all personal choice. It'd be boring if we all liked the same thing.
I think Bruce admitting his cock-ups , is all part of the “Bruce“ thing .... totally honest, always integrity beats bullshit.....
Yes initial purchase seems high for soft luggage but if you have more than one bike then can go from bike to bike with a little bit of spannering
Seriously... they are very cool. Think i will look at these for the 1250r.
Cheers Ed👍
Great product Bruce...As You Can See 🙈
Honestly don’t know why I’d choose soft luggage over BMW’s own Bruce. Genuine BMW stuff is only £663 a pair, complete! Absolute respect to you for what you’ve done in the past. Please don’t sell yourself out Bruce, motorcyclists are quite canny people......
Why am I selling myself out Nick? Can I not try other stuff or something?
LoneRider asked if I’d try out their stuff so I have - what’s the big deal?
@@teapotone Hi Bruce. If you feel that they’re an improvement over BMW’s hard version costing only 60% of these, and they don’t look like they’ve hit ‘every branch of the ugly tree’, then it’s down to a matter of taste. I respect that - and you.
Personally, I’ve tried soft panniers in the past, nothing like as good quality as these, but think they’ll get grimy like mine did, and I was always worried to leave the bike.
Please Bruce, don’t take my comments as being disrespectful of you, I really admire your zest for life, your videos (which are the next best thing to actually doing it myself!) and your stand on why you came out of the Police force. Keep up the good work!
Cheers Nick,
No bother bud, I don’t take constructive criticism, or even another persons viewpoint, as a personal dig - we’re all different 👍
Bloody good stuff! I like the way you review this. I think as a “firearms trained” bloke you have a particularly nice way of handing hardware and describing stuff. Straightforward and honest. 👍
Soft bags are the way forward I nearly cried when my wife put a big black boot scuff on my two week old multistrada pannier 😂
I love this luggage system Bruce but cannot justify the expense. I am making do with the much cheaper option of Lomo throw over waterproof panniers, which do the same job for the amount of times I will use them properly. However, if I was getting a set gratis or was a lot flusher, then I would defo have a set. 👍🏻😊
Soft bags over hard bags every time Mr Smart, see thee at the Clan meet on the IOM (Simon Orme) very much looking forward to it….goooo on 🤟🏼
👍 for the video, as the norm, But a bit on the costly side will stick with my BMW hard luggage especially when I got both boxes for around £400:00 😝😄
Foot wear! Does the garage have underfloor heating?
Thank you. Very informative.
Clearly explained with sense of humor. Well done.
Cheers Albino 👍
They do look like a good quality set up Bruce. Personally I’m a big fan of the Kriega US Bags as they are far easier and cheaper to adapt to any bike. Summer 2019 I took my MT09 to the Pico’s with the US30 and 2 US20’s, a Redverz Attacama Tent and Helinox Chair and table all strapped to the Frame under the (tiny) pillion bit on the MT09. Admittedly I had to cinch it down a couple of times on the long haul through France but generally we stop briefly every 2 hours anyway to give our ageing knees a stretch. Kriega US30 + 2x US20 = US Combo 70 £407. Bought a Tiger 900 Rally Pro in September, not had a chance to tour it yet though (Bloody Covid). So for £27.50 for a set of 4 sub frame loops (plus spare Straps etc) I’m good to go on the tiger with my existing Kriega kit. I do have the Triumph Aluminium Top box as well just because it makes me look cool. 👍😳
Yeah I used the Kriega stuff on my RTW trip, it’s great kit
Very nice, don't think they'll fit the forza though🤣 will have to wait for the release of the touring 750😁
I get it the advantages etc, flatten down when not in use (which is great), protection for the bike and so on...............
The Achilles heal is their vulnerability to theft 🤔, ah well enjoy ‘em Bruce they look just the job but keep your eye on them 👍 great vid thanks for making / sharing.
What vulnerability to theft Andrew? They lock shut with a padlock and are almost impossible to puncture🤷♂️👍
@@teapotone If I’ve understood the system correctly, the nut and bolts holding the panniers to the frame via the brackets look fairly easy to spanner off. Difficult to tell from a vid, but for the sake of a couple quid they might have supplied tamper proof pin torx bolts / nuts or similar just makes things a lot harder to pinch...........👍
No mate, the rack is also secured around the foot peg, so would take some time and faff to remove.
@@teapotoneOh yes I’ve overlooked that part in the assembly - that should make a difference, anyway let’s hope none of it is put to the test
Was considering these and the Bumot ones. The Bumot fit directly onto and lock onto the BMW frames.
Both look like they could do the job equally well.
Don’t like the sticky-up lock/plate or permanent mounting plates on the lone rider though. 🤔
An old boy once told me, "you always have time to do it right the second time". lol
😂👍
That 300mm will be 30mm then. 300mm being @12 inches. Looks like a nice system! Cheers Bruce.
Is that your suit from your "around the world trip" Bruce hanging up 🤣🤣
Yes bud, both of them
Looks very similar to the Mosko moto bags system. I've got some hard aftermarket paniers for my GS but if I was looking for replacements or a panier system for my 'commuter' then these would be a serious contender. 👍
Bob, I like your comment. I was trying to figure the difference to the Mosko Moto option too. I think the inclusion of the orange liners is possibly the only thing.
(Maybe the padlock thing too ? So many theives in the U.K. and Northern Europe)
@@maxflight777 Thanks, the main difference I can see, is the Mosko's are slightly smaller at 35L & 25L compaired to Bruce's 38L & 31L. Also as you say you don't get the inner bags, ratchet spanner or that neck buff. However, you do get a couple of Molle 5L &m 4L water bottle holders included, but being ex military, I'd customise the Molle 'extras' as needed, maybe extra water or fuel or a first aid kit bla bla bla. Having just done a quick check, there's about 30 Euro's difference, with the Lone Rider being slightly more expensive, but you do get bigger bags and more bits (it appears).
@@robchisholm72 Thanks ! The decision gets harder ! 😬
@Max Flight Happy to help 👍, rather you than me but I would choose the Lone Rider's simply because they are slightly bigger. It's better to have an empty bag than one you can't close.....
I see the appeal of soft bags. I have SW-Motech on my GS, with the quick release brackets. I really like the ability to remove the parts easily when not touring. That being said I think I can mount bags like that to the brackets I have..... much to consider...
Apparently LoneRider are releasing a quick-release system for these bags too, but I don’t know anything about it at the mo.
Hi Bruce really liked the video really shows how good these panniers are. Like some others I had been considering these instead of the aluminium due to expense and the safety issue bought to my attention by an American vlogger which is where i first found out about these.
I certainly didn't realise they came with the inners which is a saving certainly over the BMW ones. As you cant get a top box with it what do u use or suggest as a top box to go with these as I cant quite make yours out,
keep up the good work with the videos.
Hi David,
To be fair I don’t usually bother with panniers - I never take that amount of luggage with me tbh. Usually I have a Vario top box and my rucksack and that’s it.
Great vid, nice bags.. pretty sure you meant 30mm though lol
Yep
Great vid Bruce 👌 , and the bags look quality however around a grand with the racking rather steep , and they seem a bit of a faff compared to hard panniers 🤷♂️
Thanks Dale 👍
Bruce is your garage clock available to buy or a one off? Love it
It’s a one off bud, someone had it made and sent it to me! 👍
They seem very popular, looked on the website, sold out!
Looks like a good product, you should do more bike kit reviews, just for the spanner work ;-)
Comedy value 😉👍
@@teapotone definitely 😜
Looks good, but are those 'L' brackets not the wrong way round? Found Lone Rider too pricey, so went for Kriega OS bags, which fit to the std GSA racks. About half the price when I costed everything. Let's hope this year we have the opportunity to use them. 👍👍
Good looking kit although expensive for something that could be stolen when the bike was parked up outside a hotel. Just needs a spanner and they are off with whatever kit you’ve left inside.
monsi25 so if you have ones secured with a bolt and I’m parked next you and mine are secured with Velcro, which would the thief attack first? You could secure them with armed guards... and some one turns up with snipers. It’s not about making it impossible - thieves will always steal, it’s about making it harder than the next option.
LoneRider V’s BMW aluminium panniers - 6 bolts and the whole rack comes off the bike with the panniers attached. Both just as easy to pinch.
Sorf luggage for the off roader, they look good but a faff to take on and off for cleaning or when not being used, vario luggage more user friendly and a lot cheaper.
I really like the concept; light and purposeful. I can see difficulty penetrating it which a screwdriver, but can’t it more easily be sliced open with a sharp Exacto knife?
Did you watch this vid Walter? That’s covered with video footage too 👍
Great video pal, I'm new to your channel but must say your content is very good and entertaining, I'm looking to buy a new gs1250 in the next few weeks just need to test ride the Big un and Little one...
A couple of questions if you don't mind,
Are the tyres on yours the standard ones ?
what was your reasons for not choosing the Adventure ?
Thanks in advance and Thanks for your Fantastic content and humour...
Hello bud,
Welcome to the channel and I’m glad you’re enjoying the content so far!
The OE tyres on my 1250Gs when I bought it in July 2020 where the Bridgestone A41’s. I found them ok for road riding in the UK, but when I’ve tried them up in the Spanish mountains and pushed them hard, I’ve found them a bit ‘slidey’ 😬
Reasons for not getting the GSA - it’s just a fat GS. Same bike, same engine, but 35kg heavier so slower and not quite as agile, so not for me personally. 👍
@@teapotone Thanks pal ..
Really good video Bruce! I need some panniers and I will definitely be taking a look at these.
One question, related to your bike, not the panniers :-( I have exactly the same bike and I noticed the tank pad protectors you have............could you please tell me which ones they are, and are you happy with them??
Thanks :-)
They’re the Eazi-Grip tank pads bud, aye they’re great for track stuff and if you like to hang off a bit, really allow you to grip the tank securely with your inner thighs/knees 👍
@@teapotone Cheers Bruce! :-)
Great review but would liked to have seem them collapsed down on the bike as the are not easily removed regularly. 👍
Good review mate but there's a bit of faffing about to get in for a extra layer out on a chilly day
Aye definitely, totally agree
Bruce what tyres you running on the gs and are they any good. This is a cracking vid. Thank you
Hi Chris,
It’s got the stock Bridgestone A41’s on it at the moment. They’re fine for UK roads, but I tried them in Spain last year on another Gs and hated them when they were really hot and being pushed hard in the twisty mountains.
Dunlop Roadsmart 3’s or Michelin Road 5’s are the best road tyres available for the GS in my opinion at the moment.
@@teapotone thanks Bruce
Nice bags...until you mentioned the price!! All panniers are over priced...but 800 queens heads for 2 bags... its not Louis Vuitton is it?! Another great video mate. Lone Rider need to give a discount code you can share!
LOMO panniers are £50
That’s great, but this is a vid about Lone Rider Motobags 🤷♂️
@@teapotone I know but they are £800. Are they sponsoring you?
No, as I said in the vid, they just sent the kit for me to try out
It's obviously decent kit, no doubt about it. Its a personal choice on hard vs soft panniers but it jist seems pricey condering they are soft... on the same note aluminium panniers are over priced. Its horses for courses... none the less, love the video. Keep it up young man
On a completely different note is the Gs Rallye different to the standard GS. Te. Or is it just a paint job and spoke wheels ?
Essentially it’s the same bike as the TE I believe, just spoke wheels and paint job.
It always takes half the time the second time! 👍 Think I would have put those mountings further apart. 🤷. That's one very expensive Meccano set, so I'll stick to my £60, 60L, 100% waterproof seat bag I strap the the pillion seat and hope it doesn't get nicked! 😁. I can also still filter.
I was thinking the same as regards the mounting points, spread wider so effectively the corners of the bags are fastened to the frame making it more secure. Good review though and good to show the “learning experiences” ( PC Mode) you had
Hi Bruce, Do you know if they have a quick release system? I have heard that they were coming up with the system...
Yes mate they do, was just sent it last month actually and will be trying it out later this month 👍
Thank you Bruce 👍 Ride safe mate👍👍👍
Interesting video. The one thing I noticed is that the panniers don't clip on and off easily- which is something I think I would want.
Yes definitely. They now have a quick release system available but I’ve not received it yet to try.
Nice vid, nice bags, just too pricy for my liking. Maybe you should put the mounting points as far apart as possible, at least thats what my engeneering mind tells me :) By the way, nice garage you have there, looks nice but I miss the VW ! One question as well, what kind of orange floor is that ? Is that some kind of 'solid' paint ? Fuel / oil resistant ? I bet the colour would go well with a KTM, heh ? Best to you, keep up the good vids.
Nice bags, is there a camping trip or longer road trip on the future?
I plan on as many road trips as possible once freedom is returned to us bud, and will include camping at some point too.
I do meet-ups and rideouts arranged over on the Patreon page
I haven't seen these before and am surprised at the cost. However the thing I liked least was the padlocks. Surely they're gonna bang and rattle.
I’d be VERY surprised if you could hear them rattling over the engine and wind noise when you’re riding bud? Not been an issue for me anyway 🤷♂️
Bruce... Someone stole your shoes mid video. Bags look great and I prefer them to the traditional aluminium ones.
Price~wise how does it compare to the same 2x pannier BMW luggage & rack?
About the same price
Do the bags stayed permanently attached to the bike? If so, does that present any issues? Great video by the way!
Cheers Tony, yes they do bud, but LoneRider are working on a quick release system apparently.
As I say in the vid, you can flatten the bags down almost flat when you’re not using them, but I still prefer to just remove them when I’m not using them.
To be frank, I’d much rather use luggage which I can easily get on and off the bike, so I wouldn’t spend my money on these ones as they are now. Once the quick release system is available, and assuming it’s good, then these would be awesome bags to have if you’re in the market and willing to spend the premium money for top quality luggage 👍
Look great.
BTW is is helpful to be bare footed to fit the bags to the racks? LoL
Ha Ha it is when it’s 11pm in the summer and you are due to get up at 4am the next morning to go away on a trip with this luggage - and you suddenly realise you haven’t fitted it yet! 😬🤦♂️😂
The boxes that you get with the Standard GS are a much better. My opinion
Swings and roundabouts Glynn- they’re cheaper and removable (great positives), but they’re not waterproof and like other rigid systems they are prone to damage and causing injury in the event of a fall.🤷♂️
As I said Bruce, my opinion I’m on my 4 GS and they have never leaked . Enjoy your new bags 👍
Aluminium or “Varios” Glynn ?
Vario
Very Heath Robinson!! You didn't show the quick release and removal system?? Personally i don't like the scaffolding on the standard GS, it doesn't look right!! £850?? now I see how they can give away a few free!! Happy New Year.
They don’t have the quick release system available yet
Just out of curiosity where did you first find out about about these Lone Rider Bags??
They contacted me about the headlight guard and asked if I’d like to try their luggage
Did you put Rox risers on your bars?
No mate
I have the vario panniers on my GS. I don't have the liners. I've done lots of miles through torrential rain on tours in Scotland and France and they have never leaked at all. I think the liners thing is a marketing scam. The vario panniers are secure, look good (in my opinion) and come off the bike leaving it look totally standard. The other bonus to hard luggage is that they CAN protect you! I got side swiped by a car and the pannier and engine bar took all the force and my leg was left unscathed.
Good points bud 👍
Yeah, looks good. think I'll get me some for my NTV..... HOW MUCH? ..... think I'll stick with the rickman topbox and oxford strap on paniers.
Or a waterproof duffel sailing bag (half the price of bike brands) and some Andy Strapz
That too, although it's cheaper to use stuff I already have. (and I wanted to say "strap on").
Hi, I am considering purchasing these bags. How satisfied are you with them after a year of use?
Now they have the quick release system, I think they’re a great pannier system. The bags easily take any kit you’d need for a trip away, they’re totally waterproof, look great, and don’t effect the handling of the bike.
If you’re in the market for panniers then I’d stand by these definitely.
They look good! I like they can collapse when not in use. Do they slide quickly off the mounting plate to carry inside a hotel room, etc? My Mosko bags came off the plate quickly, but don't collapse down like that. Having soft bags offroad is huge as I've had them land on a foot or leg several times, even a little from behind. A little give goes a long way. My only gripe about that rack is that it's not a quick release. (I had a SW Motech rack on my Tiger XC that would come off with a flathead screwdriver and less than 5 minutes when not in use. Clean.)
No they’re not quick release, the idea is you leave the outer black bags on the bike and take the inner red bags out and into your accommodation.
I personally don’t like how the main bags are attached to the frame - it’s a real pain to take on and off so I’ve just ended up leaving the bags on the bike. It’s great the way the bags fold down flat though for sure 👍
@@teapotone hi Bruce... I’ve got the same bags. LoneRider have a quick release system soon to be released. In the meantime, it’s quick and easy to remove the mounts with the bags still attached... only 6 bolts and takes less than ten mins 👍
Yeah I’ve seen they have the quick-release system underway, I’d be interested to see that.
The LoneRider rack I have also requires you to loosen off the foot pegs to remove the rack, and as I loctite these bolts in place, I won’t be doing that very often.
The quick release system could be a game changer though 👍
@@teapotone of course, I didn’t take into account that you have the LR rack also. On the GSA it’s easier in that regard but so agree... the quick release option is the way forward, although it will leave the rather ugly looking backing plate attached to the rack/ bike which isn’t overly appealing.
@@teapotone The one I had was 5 years ago, so I'd assume it's only better now. I believe it was 3 flat-heads per side and it came off, leaving the small mounting bracket on the bike. Very slick. (Of course I never used it, but was nice to know was there...)
How are you getting on with these Bruce?
I put them on for my recent Switzerland trip bud, there great but not much else I can say really.
2 drawbacks for me - 1 is the extra width makes filtering through traffic a bit more of an issue (but this is the same for any panniers), and the other is that they’re not quick release so once they’re bolted on it’s a bit of ‘thing’ to remove them again - but there is a quick release system coming to combat this.
If you good quality panniers then I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend these 👍
