      Hey matt, how did you get the innards of the Spark plug out? Did you ream it with something? Or can it be knocked out with a hammer and I've just not hit it hard enough? I don't have a press, so I need to find a way to get it out of there. Thanks!

    • @MattsShop
      @MattsShop  6 лет назад +1

      Hey, just smash the white part with a hammer. Then chip the little white pieces out of the metal part with a hammer and screwdriver.
      Make sure to blow out or wash out the metal part so that nothing falls in your motor.

    I had a guy on the AOMCI AOMCI Facebook page tell me he uses a piston stop to torque flywheel nuts. My flywheel torque spec is 105 ft.lbs. he said he has been using the piston stop for 35 years to torque nuts. I'm not going to do it. He also said piston are forged steel. Any I have seen are aluminum. I bought a automotive flywheel wrench to hold the flywheel.

    • @MattsShop
      @MattsShop  3 года назад +3

      NEVER use the piston stop tool to torque the flywheel nut. That's insane. The pistons are aluminum. Use a flywheel holder tool.

    You can find them all over e bay but there like 30 bucks or more I just use old pice of starter rope doubled over its free

    • @MattsShop
      @MattsShop  2 года назад +2

      The rope method is not a good enough for an outboard. It is not precise enough. You need to be able to feel and adjust when the piston comes up to TDC on an outboard. The rope could get stuck in the 2 Stroke cylinder ports.

    • @kalleklp7291
      @kalleklp7291 2 месяца назад

      If the rope catches in there you may end up taking the whole power head apart.

    for my 5.7l went to harware store and bought a 1/2" x 20 thread bolt w/at least 2.5-3.0" thread under $3

    • @MattsShop
      @MattsShop  6 лет назад +1

      What did you do for the spark plug threads?

    • @solotrekker4375
      @solotrekker4375 6 лет назад +1

      The threads on the plugs of my 5.7l are 1/2"x20 thread count. So I buy a 5" long by 1/2" dia. bolt with fine(20 thread count) threads and just screw the whole bolt into the plug socket. As long as the length of the threads themselves are long enough - should be no prob contacting piston head. The threads don't wind up the whole bolt usually, so just make sure theres enough thread to get deep enough to contact piston.

    • @MattsShop
      @MattsShop  6 лет назад +1

      I didn't know that. I thought all plug threads are metric? Good tip though, that way you don't have to make an adapter like I did.

    how much the bolt a enters the cylinder to touch the piston

    • @ltsgarage7780
      @ltsgarage7780 3 года назад +2

      Gringo196 sf
      You start with the bolt backed out almost all the way up. Then you just run it in one or two turns at a time. Or do it the other way around. Turn it all the way in bring your piston up against the bolt stop the back the bolt off one turn. Move the piston up against it and repeat until the bolt moves up and the piston clears the bolt and starts back down. Screw the bolt in a quarter of a turn. If the piston doesn’t hit the bolt screw it in another quarter turn. Repeat until you find TOP DEAD CENTER

  • @ltsgarage7780
    @ltsgarage7780 3 года назад +2

    How in the hell did you get the porcelain out of the center? I have destroyed 2 plugs so far. I just can’t get it to break out??

    • @MattsShop
      @MattsShop  2 года назад

      Cylinder 1 and 2 are opposing cylinders they would be opposite.

  • @GringoSF

    how far the bolt goes into the cylinder to touch the piston

    • @MattsShop
      @MattsShop  4 года назад +1

      You screw it in and out and rotate the piston until the pointer reads TDC on the flywheel. At least over 1". Make sure it's safe and won't start with the TDC tool in.

  • @navyclaw
    @navyclaw 4 года назад +1

    How do you use this?

    • @MattsShop
      @MattsShop  4 года назад +2

      Disconnect the battery. You take all the spark plugs out, rotate the engine with the tool inserted and adjust everything until you find TDC. There are timing marks on the flywheel. Don't ever start the engine with the tool in.
