That's one thing when its a stranger telling a 9 , 10 year old kid. He or she can or can't be a certain person or do something in a career when growing up. What if its the Mother or Father telling their own kid those words. "You can't be or do so and so when your grow up. Think about reality!" If your Asian American and have a Parent born before 1960. You most likely didn't get emotional, moral and even physical support from your parent growing up. Most Asian Parents over 65 don't believe in supporting their kids hopes and dreams. It's all about being practical and thinking about basic stuff and letting your dreams go for the now. Asian Parents over 65 believed in just providing financially for their families, making sure the child has clothes, food, shelter and is healthy. Everything else that child has to learn and do on their own.
Think I heard other words, curse words said to me more than my own name from my Mom growing up in a single parent household. "You idiot, retard, stop being stupid, you wanna cry I'll give you something to cry about, stop feeling down with your emotions suck it up". At 9 , 10 years old had to learn to encourage myself, learn things on my own because my mom was working 40 to 50+ hours a week and my older brother was getting in trouble doing things on his own and wasn't spending time with me when he wasn't in school. At 9 , 10 years old had to be my own Father, when it comes to getting emotional, mental, moral physical support for an adult male.
Wasn't going to get it from any one else in my family so learn to do things on my own at a young age. Encouraged and pushed myself to graduate high school in 2000, encouraged , pushed myself and paid for my own way through college and graduated in 2015. Till this day, my mom still tells me from time to time that I waisted my time going to college. Still not getting emotional or moral support from her as an adult 20+ years later after graduating high school. I promised myself when I was a kid and growing up that I would never not show support to my child.
Never let my kid or kids experience what I had to go through growing up. I never got support from my Mom or my dad, or my older brother growing up. Every time I asked anyone in my family for help they got upset and treated me like I was an inconvenience for them. Told myself growing up that I would make sure that my child knows that I love and care about them and believe in what ever dreams they want to accomplish as they grow up. Give them stuff that I never got as a child, teen or young adult.
