This has happened to me before when me and my friends went to a hotel. While we were there we thought it would be safer to keep our phones and other stuff of value in our room while we went to the pool. When we came back a maid was inside cleaning, which we thought was weird because we still had 3 days left. The phones were missing along with bags and clothes, and when we asked what happened to them she said she had not seen anything like that in here", which made us flip out. We go to complain at the front desk about it then following the owner back to the room to look around more, only to find the stuff back in the room on the floor scattered. The owner thought we were lying about it but we asked him to check the security cameras outside the hotel. It showed the maid taking and putting stuff back in the room. She got fired that night and we got an extra four days to stay at the hotel as an apology.

Because a sign is going to stop a burglar er "going go steal stuff- oh wait theres a sign never mind cant do much about that, maybe another day"

Definitely sounds like attempted theft, though the fact she returned it is probably just her trying to keep you from reporting it. Never had that problem at hotels, but I keep the Do Not Disturb sign up at all times until I checkout, and if possible (I know Holiday Inn does this) I can request that cleaning crews not visit the room until we have checked out.

I used to work in a hotel. And they probably did try to steal the mic and head phones. If you and your friends went to the front desk the housekeepers would have gotten caught for making up some random guy. The hotel would have figured they were trying to steal from the room and they probably would have gotten fired.

    • @nicolediaz5762
      @nicolediaz5762 9 лет назад +4

Plus on top of that if theres a do not disturb sign the housekeepers know not to go in there until check out time. Or if the front desk calls up and says the guest checked out.

As much as I like to help the maids and such in hotels, I've encountered plenty of dishonest ones. I had left a costume necklace (which was extremely extravagant looking to fit into the ballgown costume I had) across the TV dresser stand and headed to lunch with friends. When I returned the room was clean, beds turned down and garbage taken out, but the necklace was gone and I reported it to the front desk. They later stopped me when I was returning from the convention and returned the necklace, saying one of the maids had brought it to them after another guest had given it to them to put in lost and found. It was extremely disheartening since the two people I was sharing the room with both had gone with me to and from lunch and we all knew I'd placed the necklace on the dresser. Granted the necklace had only cost me about twenty dollars, and had it not been returned to me wouldn't have been a disastrous thing, but I knew the maids were the only possible thieves. Since then I keep a do not disturb sign as well as inform the front desk that I don't want anyone cleaning my rooms, and still lock anything of value in the safe. I know not all maids follow such a trend, but too much of my cosplay work is expensive and I refuse to risk anything that I've created or purchased.

This has happened to me before! I was at a con called Fandomcon in Florida, I had a do not disturb sign up before I went out to the con on the first day and left a canvas bag with some clothes and equipment (Camera stand, SD cards and more) in the middle of the room, when I return there's no longer a do not disturb sign and when I went in the bag was gone, I went to the office and asked for another sign and mentioned the missing bag and they said that they'd "Look into it." The next day I'm getting ready to head out and I hear the room service knock on the door, I don't bother responding because I already had the do not disturb sign put back up, and room service OPENS THE DOOR, since the chain lock was on she soon realized that I was still in my room and she quickly closed the door and I could hear her basically running away. After I return from the con I went back to the front desk and asked if they had found anything, and they had said that apparently one of my bags likely got "Mistaken for a trash bag" and was thrown out. INSANE.

I work in a small hotel in north central Indiana as a laundry attendant, so I work with housekeeping. We have policies that Shouldn't cause anything to be stolen. But some hotels will have housekeepers come and clean check out rooms around 9 or 10 am. A guest has to tell a housekeeper if they are leaving after 1 pm or earlier than check out. I've seen this at a few others.
You took the proper cautions: using the "do not disturb" sign all weekend, and checking into your room during the day.
But to have a housekeeper clean out a room and your keys suddenly not working before check out is suspicious. Card keys are suppose to stop working on a room right after check out when front desk goes to make and reissue card keys for the next guest in the room. Personally, I find foul play in that and the first clue was when you said "your card keys stopped working before checking out at the desk". The "guy" was either code or some legit person trying to steal.
I'm really glad that the house keeper you talked to went up to another housekeeper to admit and gave you your stuff back. It sounded like they had a plan of running away if you took longer to get your friends. So this story has a happy ending...shame on those housekeepers for attempting to steal your expensive stuff...

I was at a con one time and I left my room to check out and I almost forgot my purse and I went back and I caught the maid taking stuff out of my purse and setting aside what she wanted and I know that if something from a guests room is still there after check out you tag it and turn it into the front desk now she made up some bogus lie and said " I was just trying to see who's purse it was " I reported her and I don't know if she got fired but I hope she did

I always keep valuables in the safe provided in Aus hotels, while my family just leave their stuff out. I was relaxing on the balcony when a maid came in and I watched her grab my laptop and put it in a bag, along with other valuables, cleaned the room, and I revealed myself as she was going to leave. She flipped out and gave me all the stuff back, while I complained to the manager, being 12 at the time with social anxiety issues did not help, but security cameras are the best.

I worked at a Hilton for about 8 months and find out that once the maids start cleaning the rooms that if they find anything they can keep it and if they turn anything in to the manager, the manager keeps it. When I worked there my manager bragged to me that he got 4 cameras since he's working at this location. Each camera worth a couple hundred each.

I'm gonna start to be more aware of the "what if's" when staying at hotels from now on. I personally would have question the issue further when you got your belongings back, but that's just me...I don't know if I would have been in too much of a high if I was in your state of mind at the time. But every time something questionable is going on, I always start asking questions. But that's just me. Interesting story nonetheless, and I'm super glad that everything worked out in the end for you guys!

I have never had a thing stolen from me. There was this one time when a plush fell out of my book bag and someone picked it up and was walking around carrying it to see if anyone would recognized it and we saw her and asked her if she found the plush on the ground and she confirmed that she found it and gave it back to me.

Last time I stayed in a hotel, we always put any electronics in the dresser or in the cabinet with the fridge, and any of the really expensive stuff (like my iPods and phone and dsi) we took with anytime we left

First of all, great new intro. Now as for the problem you had with the maid and room cleaning, I think it's safe to say it was sketching, but I feel they really wanted to keep the mic and headphones because it sounds like she knew where it was the entire time. Also it's great that you got your stuff back.
Anyway I usually let room cleaning come in but I (and anyone I'm rooming with) always carry our electronics with us when we leave the room or keep it in our cars.

One time me and my family were driving to Florida and look for a hotel to spend the night in. I was 8 years old. Once we found one my Dad sent my mom in and when she came back out she said they had a room open but she didn't want to take me in hecause of something going on in the lobby. My mom went went back in and when she came out she told us she asked the lady at the desk for the Mangers number. When we called the number it call the lady at the front desk. We left very angry. A couple of months ago I asked my Mom about the incident and it turns out there were people stripping in the lobby. Florida is a scary place kids.

I don't trust maids at all. I will never trust them.
I was at Fanime Con this year, and my boyfriend and I stayed at a Motel 6 since every other hotel was booked solid. Motel 6 doesn't have any "do not disturb" signs so we have to tell the front desk, which I did the next morning (Friday) since we were there Thursday for pre-reg pickup. We were awake at the time the maid tried to come in on Friday morning so I answered the door and turned her away. Then I told my boyfriend "hey, I'm gonna go to the front desk and tell them we don't want maids" So I go down to the front desk, the guy pulls out a chart, asks for my room number and writes down "no service." So we go out on our way. Everything was good, until the next morning (Saturday) when they tired coming in again. We were still in our room at the time so I turned her away again. I think it was a different lady, so I assumed she didn't read the chart and I was still annoyed but I gave her the benefit of the doubt. We leave when we are ready and go enjoy the con. We come back later that afternoon and our room has been serviced. I freak the fuck out. Luckily nothing was taken from the room but I was still extremely pissed. So I go to the front desk again, I was still being nice since its likely not the front desk's fault but I tell them that when I said we didn't want service, we meant for the whole weekend, and told them that the maids came into our room anyway. He said "okay, thank you for telling me" and we both went our separate ways. A maid still tried to come in Sunday but we locked the deadbolt so she couldn't come in. I let it slide since it was our last day there and we were checking out Monday morning.
But yeah. I'm still salty about it to this day. Doesn't matter if they didn't steal anything from us, whats the point of a chart if they aren't going to read it. And I know they know its con season. So they have no excuses.

I love the new intro Cody uvu. & that story just sounds suspicious , it wasn't right for them to clean your room without your consent or permission. They probably wanted your mic & headphones and thought that you wouldn't care or realize.
I wasn't at a convention when this happened but we were just cleaning out our room at a hotel and took the stuff down to the car and i can't exactly remember what happened next but i remember the maids came in and cleaned our room and when we got back up , my father's video camera was missing so we reported to the front of the hotel and THEY had it , but i still don't think its right to take stuff from somebody's hotel even if your a maid ._.

Yeah, I think they were trying to steal it. That's why I always carry my stuffs around all the time. Doesn't matter if they are heavy or a hassle, I can't have my friends watch over it at all time, anyway. They'd want to enjoy their time at the con too. I never stay at a hotel either because; 1. I can't work yet (foreign students aren't allowed to work here) so I won't be able to pay my share anyway, 2. conventions in Singapore are never at a hotel, and 3. Singapore is small so going everywhere is never too far.

Yeah. .. that was definitely an attempt at taking several hundred dollars worth of property. Just from the fact that they said someone who was unknown to all four roommates 'let them in' to clean, had the do not disturb sign on the door, and then proceeded to say that the unknown individual took the items. It was a pretty crappy cover up and as soon as she knew yall got in contact with everyone in the room, she went straight to where the items she previously stated were taken by someone she didn't even know.. the other cleaning lady.. sorry, that's no coincidence, and i would have informed management immediately. :/

I went to Anime Boston 2014, my first convention. It was Saturnday and I'm in the elevator going back to my room with my dad,and a friend, there was 2 guys that were in there before us and I had a print in my purse sticking out because it didn't fit. We got out and the print was gone. I thought I dropped it on the elevator so me and my friend stood infront of the elevator, pressing the down button waiting for it to come up and see if I left it and quickly grab it and run out. No luck, after getting a new one free (the artist was nice)I thought that maybe one of the guys stole it from me because I had the print all the way up before the elevator. That was my thought ever since.

You came to the exact same conclusion i did. Sounds sketch but i wouldnt accuse them. Also, was there a language barrier? That could have added some confusion and explain the misunderstanding.

That's crazy. I've never had anything like that happen at any hotel. I'm guessing they took advantage of the commotion with everyone leaving the con. If that's not it, it's possible the maids didn't appreciate the fact that there was a "do not disturb" sign on the door all weekend, so they couldn't get a tip for cleaning well. These are just shots in the dark.

At youmacon I was walking to my shoot and someone pulled me aside and asked if they can get a picture and a hug. I was like yea im down. As this guy was showing me his picture he took someone else was sneaking behind me and grabbing my prop hammer and trying to take it from me. Had no idea who this was and never met them. They had a serious face and never asked me to see my prop or anything. I grabbed it back and pulled pretty hard to get it away from him. My boyfriend was with me at the time and said hey what are you doing. After I pulled my hammer really hard he glared at me and walked away. I dont know what peoples problems were at youmacon 2015. I complimented someones cosplay and they were like no duh. Also had someone try taking our badges and staff was incredibly rude.

One time when my friends and I were at Anime Milwaukee we were staying in the hotel connected to the con and everything was great... until my friend and I got hungry and realized that the bread we brought with us was missing, nothing else, just the bread. It just disappeared from our room, no matter where we looked in the room we couldn't find the bread. So yeah the important part of our food was just taken and never heard from again. We are not sure if the cleaning service oddly took it (though we thought why would they only want the bread and not any of the other valuable stuff we had still in the room) or someone else in this other friend group, who was staying in another room took it.
we laugh about it now cause while there we saw someone cosplaying Aladdin and say he was the bread thief lol, but yeah at the time we were pretty upset

Bruh *the maids tried to steal your stuff.* There's no "maybe" or "misunderstanding". *Stop being so naive.* I would've called the cops right away as soon as they "found my stuff". They have security cameras dude, have them pull it up, prove that you had time before you left and have them arrested before they do that to someone else. They've probably been doing it for years, that's why the maid sounded so confident when she lied to you. She's used to it, her lie has probably been enough in most cases and when the customer persists they give back the stuff before you go to the hotel or cops about it so they won't get fired.

Next time, I would report it to the hotel. As long as you told them what happened with a level head like you did here, it may help the hotel address similar issues in the future. If it were me, I would have reported the incident, again not accusing anyone, or expecting compensation but just so they know and may be able to look out for it. It may also lead them to be able to deal with an employee who has maybe done it multiple times or know what to look for in case it happens again.

I know this video is old but I am a housekeeper. If your things go missing in your room, you call the front desk. It was wrong of that maid to lie but the one with the bag probably was assigned your room. We are supposed to bag the items and then date them with the room number. We clean rooms before checkout if it looks like people have gone. With only a few items left in the room, the housekeeper probably thought you checked out early. Some keys go out and stop working around checkout time regardless of whether or not you have a late checkout.

They clearly were the ones who stole your stuff because the first maid knew where to go to give you back your stuff when you guys and her met with the second maid. The second maid had it on her. They told you a lie to throw you off their trail. They knew they were fucked if you had reported this to the front desk and they would've got fired since they had no other way out because they were the ones who cleaned the room, so they gave you back your stuff so you could keep quiet. Honestly, I wouldn't take this shit. A few years back, yes, but not now. I would have reported them to the manager to get them fired, they deserved it.

It seems to always be the cleaning staff who steals things. I've had some things stolen from my desk at an old job. I didn't realize it was the cleaning staff until I moved desks and saw a cleaning lady take something from my old desk.
