Now with annotation commentary, filled with trivia and notes on the making of the film.
In the industrialized society of tomorrow, Detective Jack Darter must unlock the secret behind a mysterious robbery.
This film was created using stop-motion animation and LEGO bricks (sometimes called a "brickfilm") and is loosely styled after the detective film noir of the 1940s.
The film is available in other formats, including a high definition version, here:

This film was my entry to the 2008 Brickfilms.com FAR Contest, and it won 1st place out of 9 entries. Once you've seen the film, don't forget to check out the making-of article:

This needs to be made into a full movie, excellent flow throughout the movie :D
@legoluvver Soylent Green was a major inspiration. (That and 'Silent Running')
This is some of the greatest animation I have ever seen! Good Job VNAnimation I cant wait to see more from you guys
One of the greatest brickfilms, hands down.
I've seen this before on Bricksinmotion website, but I just can't get enough of it. It really is brilliant. Flawless and gripping. Just excellent. One of my favorites 5* (but only because I can't rate it higher)
Fascinating! Amid the flashy effects, I like the physical ones the best, especially the raindrops and the various lighting techniques. I'm currently working on a lego stopmotion 50s film noir spoof, so this was a vast source of inspiration.
I'm glad you added the annotations.
@jstudios98 I think the majority of the similarities to Wall-E are due to us both getting ideas from the 1972 film 'Silent Running'...the rest is coincidence, since Wall-E came out the day after I finished this
it sucks that this one got more views than the hd version
10/5 stars! Great story! Great Animation! Great special effects! Great everything! One of the 5 best Brickfilms to date! It makes my Brickfilms look like junk. What's funny about your film is the detective sounds a lot like Zap Brannigan.
Dude! Best movie yet!!! Five stars!!!!
Yeah, it's much better, I can now fully read your comentary, thanks. and nice animation by the way
The onlydifference between this guy and every other lego animation director: Lighting. And it makes ALL the difference.
@2000mroliver mouths were done with Carrara and Axogon Composer, compositing was mostly done in Compositelab
AWESOME BEST BRICKFILM EVA!!!!
The beginning (about the earth) and the end (with the plant) kinda reminded me of Wall-E.
Bloody hell! I'm in awe, truly wonderful.
@legocompassstudios well...for the look at the buildings in the commercial at the beginning, nothing was real so no greenscreen was involved. The scene with Carl and Jack on the balcony had a greenscreen.
Absolutely amazing.
@razorxxlego as in the rain in the air? The rain in the air was done in Sqirlz water reflections, I basically rendered it there on a black background then composited it on top of the footage in Axogon Composer. (Any program that can composite one video layer on top of another with a "screen" blending mode would work)
This is totally briljant! I saw it before when you posted it on BiM for the FAR competition.
-T.G-Tom
@legocompassstudios the buildings weren't greenscreened because they were computer generated. I did greenscreen footage on top of the footage made in carrara though using other software, yes.
Thanks, and yes.
RUclips's compression does hurt the image quality somewhat, particularly given the dim lighting used in much of the film. If you want higher quality, feel free to check out the crystal clear High-Definition version. (link provided in the description)
Thanks Philip. You gave me an idea.
Probably the first film noir lego movie. Wonderful fx and lighting. I wish you would do a blade runner trailer.
@legocompassstudios well...I have been using Carrara and/or its predecessor Ray Dream on and off for 13 years. So just owning the software isn't going to be enough, learning how to use it and create the kind of imagery you want to make could be a pretty long process.
There are lots of free greenscreening options, for instance CineGobs, though I haven't tried it it's supposed to be good.
Wow I love this film.
@Soniczeldaking I created it in Carrara using an ocean simulator primitive thingy.
Excellent work.
Thanks for sharing and posting. :)
that was sou amazing I have newer seen anything like it
Sorry about that, that would be a result of the cropping tag I'd used to get rid of the bars on the sides after the facts. Removed the tag, should work now.
this is sthe best movie i have ever seen i hope there is another one soon or if there is i am all over it
WOW!! Very good! This is an awesome video. 5 stars to you.
You should make a sequel to Unrenewable. That would be awesome.
flawless
@DudeWheresMyMind LEGO doesn't make the hat in gray, just brown when I made this film, though it's now available in black and tan too. No gray though.
I used a program called 'Axogon Composer,' and filmed with blank faces, so the rest of the face was also added in post. The making-of link in the vid description may be of interest to you.
best lego movie ever
@jay1995100 Heh. I made this before Wall-E came out. Similiarities aren't necessarily coincidental though because Wall-E and this film were both inspired somewhat by the 1972 movie "Silent Running."
@SpencerReedBass I used Carrara mostly, there's some explanation in the "making-of" article linked in the vid description, also a full list of software I use in the FAQ on my channel
another great video
@DudeWheresMyMind Yeah, if I make a sequel to this I'll probably buy a second hat and paint it gray, and use that for all but the closeups. The surface of the hat loses some detail when it's painted, unfortunately.
nice job, very realistic and good point, maybe we'll end up like that in the future, i guess this is how it ends.
these videos are great!!!!!
he does. Look at the HD version of the film.
Haha, it was actually my dad recorded while he was sleeping.
OMG im totally amazed!!!! if i would have a film company i would pay for you to join:))
How did you created the arm-movements so smoothly? taken pictures in every little move?
There's a list of software in my channel, Carrara being the 3D animation software.
w00t! Its on YT!
Oh, even better!
so awesome
this is an awesome video. :)
@TediI47
I think the mention of high population in a sci-fi detective story it what brought up images of soylent green for me.
@SpencerReedBass the sludge was computer generated.
Yes.
There's a link to the "making of" I wrote about this video in the description.
AWESOME
Can't really compare them, Carrara is a 3D animation program and AE is a 2D compositing/editing/effects program. It's like saying Word is better than Excel.
yeah, I use both types of programs for mine, they serve completely different purposes
(I use Blender and effects lab pro)
Good graphics.
I would like to make a sequel eventually, I'm working on something else right now though.
that vid is awesome
what programm did you use for the green screen and for making the peoples mouth move and them blincking the eyes.
Thanks a lot great movie
There's something called the Bafta on our
brickfilmers forum.
He told me that he took him 2 months to film and another 2 months to edit.
They're all yellow. Their knees don't bend. They have no noses. I could go on all day...
awesome
@skordijhl I'm amused by the assertion that only some of this video is unrealistic. Although nuclear smokestacks most definitely do emit steam from their tops, try a Google images search of "Nuclear Smokestack" for several thousand examples of this.
It's set in the future, though; the government in the fictional setting of the film may be quite different from our own.
i know he's making a new video, not a sequel.
He told me something about action scenes...
@FrameByFrame1000 There's some greenscreen...but the majority of it's real sets
@darklordmario43 The idea for Wall-E was made way back in 1995, I don't see how he could sue them.
the air purifiers made me think the polytech made some kind of soilent green
Cool.
Should Have Been A 1:00 Longer But All In All Great Great Animation
Acoustica Mixcraft
Nope, I filmed and edited the movie in about 45 days' time.
You know, you could of tinted Jack's hat with a marker. But I guess you didn't want to mess up the hat. Or accidentally mess up Jack's head with undried marker ink. I know that happened to me.
He's human too.
@elfskater98 How does it suck? Because you don't understand it? Also, Disney did not make it, Pixar did, Disney has nothing whatsoever to do with the actual production of the films that Pixar make (except for sometimes when they get voice actors).
Nice job Smeagol :) The only thing I didn't like was the mouth animation. Seemed a bit odd.
NXTManaic
continue making videos
Yeah, the first one was a phone on speaker.
To clear up any confusion, VN had nothing to do with the making of this film. ;)
How did you do the mouth animation
awseome make a second part
Sprayed water on the set with a spray bottle.
is there going to be a second film???
Thanks, but I've already got a lot of other projects in the works. If you're looking for advice on how to get started, I recommend bricksinmotion(dot)com
he made them in axogon composer
Everybody wants to...
@legocompassstudios Carrara
make a second part
Carrara
Most of the annotations go off the edge of the screen, and I can't read them
@SmeagolStudios Man u really did u'r research for the production of this short film. Figure of speech.
And why do you say that?
Yeah, the rest of that shot was computer generated.
what software did you use to compose the music?
@elfskater98 Not only are you wrong, but your comment makes no sense whatsoever. -_-
@jstudios98 Its worth a shot
