WNBA Finals aside, this was the league’s biggest game since, well, ever.
No disrespect to other exceptional games there’ve been over the years. But the Indiana Fever’s first visit to the Chicago Sky since Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso were drafted gave a glimpse of the league’s future, and it is tremendous.
It was a heck of a game, first of all, the Sky winning 88-87 after the Fever missed a potential game-winners with two seconds left. Reese had her best performance as a pro with 25 points and 16 rebounds. Cardoso showed what a problem she’s going to be once she gets her timing down, disrupting the Fever’s offense time and again, including a redirection of a Clark pass that led to a Reese layup that put the Sky on top for good.
And Clark? Well, we already knew all she does is set records and she did it again Sunday. Her 13 assists, to go with 17 points, was a single-game Fever record.
But the best part of the day was the atmosphere of this game. It was electric, the kind of energy this city hasn’t seen for a professional basketball game since the Jordan years. Wintrust Arena was sold out, and there were lines snaking around the building well before the doors opened. There were celebs sitting courtside. Fans were into it from the opening tip, their cheers downright deafening over the last two minutes.
The game was nationally televised, too, on ESPN. Which likely means more blockbuster ratings in a year that’s already seen a lot of them.
“It’s good for the game. Good for women’s basketball but also good for women’s sports,” Reese said afterward. “Everybody’s watching right now. I think it’s just one of the most important times, right, and we just continue to keep putting on - I think both teams tonight did an amazing job of putting on a show. It was fun.”
Anyone who says differently is being a contrarian. Or a Neanderthal. What the league has lacked are the fierce regular-season rivalries. Not the personal animosity and cat fighting that some ignorant and ill-intentioned people are trying to stoke. But heated battles that deliver every time the teams meet, with the biggest stars bringing out the best in one another.
Those rivalries drive sports, fueling interest from the diehard and casual fans alike. We get invested in these games, regardless of what’s on the line. The Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers could both be at the bottom of the NFC North and it’ll still be a game worth watching because of the teams’ history and proximity. Same for the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox.
The NBA is what it is today in large part because of the Magic and Bird’s rivalry, which began in college and carried over to their professional careers.
This is what the WNBA now has in the Sky and Fever. The WNBA has always had talented players. Maybe not the depth of it that there is now, but talent nonetheless. There have been some captivating Finals, too. Think the Las Vegas Aces and New York Liberty last year. The Houston Comets and the Liberty back in the day. Heck, Diana Taurasi’s Phoenix Mercury and … everyone.
Reese and Cardoso and Clark and Aliyah Boston are the cornerstones of their franchises. They already have an established history; Clark beat Boston and Cardoso in the Final Four two years ago before losing to Reese and LSU in the NCAA title game, then Clark beat Reese in this year’s Elite Eight before losing to Cardoso and South Carolina in the championship game.
Every one of those games was wildly entertaining and even more compelling.
Now they’re in the WNBA, split between teams that are less than three hours apart. Given the spiciness of their first three games, their meetings are going to continue to be must-see TV for as long as they’re playing. Which, given how young all four of them are, is going to be a while.
“I said this a couple of weeks ago, I think they did a really great job (in college) showing how great the game is on the women’s side. Individually, they’re all great players,” the Fever’s Kelsey Mitchell said.

The coaching error was getting away from the pick and roll. The teammate error was not being efficient in transition. Those open looks in transition were game changing, as well as the lack of discipline on defense. At the pro level, smoked layups and dropped passes are simply unacceptable, and the Sky made them pay. This game should have never come down to the "last shot". Great game from both squads.
The Fever has the WORST pick-n-rolls I have ever seen. 6th graders at my local YMCA do it better.
Sides is wrong that sequence Clark got double and Wallace was open but she missed the layup! It was correct read by Clark!
Clark mentioned that the Fever fouled too much. That was no lie--the Sky had 22 points from free throws. The Fever only had 10 from free throws. That cost Indiana the game right there, even allowing for the home court advantage Chicago had.

I'm a college basketball and tennis player from Palm Springs in the 70's. I trained in the sun and sometimes at 100 degrees. The FOULS are BECAUSE CC's teammates lack physical endurance. They get lazy and slap at the ball or not get in position soon enough. Tennis and BASKETBALL are running sports ! Our Moto at College of the Desert was RUN and GUN ! Get in the Sun and run wind sprints until they drop and watch them develop ! Kids today are not fit ! Good interview I'll Sub !
Angel tripped over her own feet and it was called a foul. By the end of the game NaLyssa basically just let Reese score because she got called on everything, even things that were not there. Fever are not great defensively causing them to foul more, but they also were getting bullshit calls against them in the last 2 games. To be fair the refing in this game was horrible from both sides, but due to how Sky play it benefited them more.

they were not winning the whole game it was several lead changes in the first half the fever were up by 1 to end the half then the sky came out with crucial turnovers and the fever extended the lead it could’ve been a blow out if the sky didn’t have so many turnovers

Sam! It shouldn't have come down to a single possession. How many airballs? How many missed layups? How many missed passes? All that said, if this were Iowa, Caitlin would have taken the last shot; but for the Fever, Caitlin just passes for the 'sure' shot, which misses. Maybe you've heard this already, but even the reporters were asking why Caitlin didn't take the last shot. Of course she said she trusts her teammates. This is the part I don't for a minute believe. Coach Sides said, ""I never want her to not be aggressive and take shots." Do you believe that? If that's the case, why does Caitlin seem to be stuck on 11 shots per game?

The play was run for Caitlin. In-bound decoy, curl the 3pt arc cross court. The ball went to Caitlin. She was the first option. And she saw the double from Cardoso. And knew she didn’t have the shot, and it went back to the second option, AB. She missed it. Game. Stop making excuses.

Great game! I'm a Fever fan, so I was so bummed when they started to let go of that 15 point lead with 90 seconds left in the 3rd! Props to Angel Reese. Props to Chennedy Carter too actually. The Chicago coach seems great. I can only imagine that she said to Carter -- "Keep that FIRE inside. If you keep it inside, I'm gonna trust you, and I'm gonna start you." And since that initial cheap shot, Carter has been all about business since then and playing great.
As for CC, her game is just so much fun to watch. To me it's because she has some skills that translate to the best of both men and women. If she was playing a top male player 1 on 1, she would lose. But in a 3 point shoot out? In a free throw contest? And her passing? When it's flowing, it's truly a thing of beauty. That bounce pass down court to Mitchell? That was next level.

Sides is afraid to be a coach, shes trying to be friends with the players! Angel Reese most likely get rookie of the Year because if she don't, it will be called racism. The fact is the only people that see this as a rivalry is the media and Reese herself. They're not even the same position and soon she will fade out because they'll tune her out just like the fans have done with the rest of the WNBA. This will include Clark except that she will have have earned more money by far than the rest.

No question about it, Reese played an outstanding game and was making some terrific shots. However, she also had a lot of help from the refs. In one play she went over the top and pushed two players out of the way and was not called for either foul. She did make a very difficult shot and the other team was called for a foul. That gave her 3 points when the other team should have the ball if the refs had called either of Reese's fouls.
If you ignore the no calls against Reese, she deserves "Rookie of the year." However, in most games, she will not be getting help from the refs because the other ten teams will not put up with it and, if necessary, will penalize and/or replace the refs.
Nalyssa Smith told the Ref "do yo job." I love seeing the women being themselves AND the media posts it!

I think Reese has done her thing but she needs to do more than just a double double to win ROY over Clark, she needs to have more than 1 assist a game and needs to start getting some blocks, she only has 1 block all season while Clark averages 1 block a game, Reese needs more blocks than that at her size. Clark’s Avg. 16.5 pts 5.5 reb 6.5 ast 2 stl 1 blk a game, I just think Clark does more things better than Reese, not to mention Clark has a better FG % than Reese which makes no sense because Reese should have a higher FG% than Clark considering she takes mostly layups and put backs compared to Clark who’s a shooting guard that avg 8 3pointers per game.

Just checked , Angel is shooting 40.6 form the field , CC is shooting 39% from the field. Second, Angel Reese is 8th in the WNBA in steals, and is averaging more steals than Caitlyn Clark.

When you're picked #1 like Clark, you're going to a really bad team, and possibly a team with a not very good coach. Not sure about their coach, but you got to have someone who forms the team's offense around Clark because she's that's good and talented. Kind of like Joe Burrow with the Bengals, Mahomes, and top NFL QB that is elite, you build your scheme and talent around that person if they are on that elite type of level. I'll give the Fever Coach a little credit in that that would be hard to do in a short amount of time.
Boston was the 1 pick last year and rookie of the year. CC is the point she has the ball in her hands if she is the one like Kobe she has to just shoot it. They don’t have to design plays for her if she got the ball.

Angel didn't pass CC for ROTY one bit IMO. Clark set a record number of assists. Reese did have a great game though. She finally shot well. The Sky get good ratings when they play Indiana, thats all.
