  • Dale Jr. is often asked to explain how someone can make it in racing and Ives serves as the perfect example for him to share. Hear the steps Ives took to establish himself and gain experience in the sport before getting to NASCAR.
An interaction at a family reunion ultimately set Ives up for the rest of his life. He details what happened, getting a call from Hendrick Motorsports and his first interview with the organization. Then hear what he had to do to make it to Daytona in order to meet the No. 24 team during Speedweeks.
Ives then talks about getting a job offer from Hendrick Motorsports and how once there, doors opened quickly, and how his willingness to volunteer elevated his career.
Listen to the entire interview on dirtymomedia.com or any major podcasting platform.

Had a similar experience but the results was a fail. Years ago when attending the Race in Sonoma when the SCCA had run the same weekend I met this fellow who was interested in hiring a mechanic (me) for their race team (in SCCA). Told me that they were gonna be in Laguna Seca the following month and if I really was interested that I should meet them there. So I packed for the weekend and made the journey to the coast. When I get there, make my way to the paddock only to find out they didn’t make it to the race for lack of funds. Dreams went up in smoke. Drive back home with lost hopes. Needless to say the best part of that was seeing some Indy car practice and checking out this legendary track.

I had the best job at Ford Motor Company. As a master mechanic with part of an associates degree. I was hired into Ford Racing, based on my experience, helping others race in Scca. And a very small amount of road course racing.
Overnight I was a data collection guy, as well as a shock absorber tech with Ford nascar cup teams.

you know the news... but soon your going to hear...
    The Rest Of The Story
    page 1
I miss the "back in the day at the #3 shop dei open house 4-29-"
the music of "gone to Carolina in my mind" or "message in a bottle"
plays on repeat in my head when I think back.
    Happy B Day .. RDE....
    Robert L. in Virginia ---
    page 2
    ""Jr. you've got my resume""
Marty Smith gave it to you for me...
or so I hoped ,, ""he said he would "" back in 2005
when I gave it to him outside the bobcat arena after the Craftsman pit crew championships
( Kasey's 9 dodge team won) and he won Richmond in may for his first with Ray back in the day
however I guess I missed the call after all ..
but I have slept in the bed of my Chevy truck, back when Dale opened in Charlotte
submitted resume to every team in Mooresville and Charlotte...
couldn't afford a room but I do remember spending the mornings at days inn (beside waffle house)
eating free corn flakes breakfast in hopes to meeting some of the crew guys leaving waffle house.. lol..
but back in 2005 the drive for diversity led so many teams to tell me "we have to hire minorities"
that even after handing out business cards at the Tyson PIT school challenge
where I met Ryan Pemberton and taking "the Carolina Welding test"
then at the 01 army car Joe Nemechek mb2 ? Scott Riggs 10?
and changing tire's on a practice team for 15 year old Joey Lagano hooter's pro cup car
just to get a chance at Roush where he tried to run me over first pit stop
because he couldn't dis-engauge the clutch fully..
( he couldn't reach the pedal without the added block of wood held on with a wire tie)
but he won in his third start for them and signed with Gibbs ,,
ps. when toyota built redbull..open resumes' I applied.. still no luck.
    page3
and then had to returned home back to the dealership, after my tax returns money had expired..
I did this for a few years from 1994-1998 then again in 2005-07 but ..
here comes gravity / back to reality...
....can still be there in 7 hours..
    ....holla at cha boy... RacerX

But, If I don’t make it as a driver, I could be like Cole Whitt, Coleman Pressley and become a crew chief or spotter, or that Wally Dallenbach Jr. where he knew he wasn’t gonna make it as a driver, so he jumped in the booth and look at him now.... hopefully
